Thudd Kassel was drafted by the Tijuana Luchadores with the 12th pick in the S17 DSFL draft, and was highly regarded by the team, being the third LB drafted. Analysts loved Thudd’s drive and skill, but character concerns followed him. Before the draft had begun Thudd Kassel announced that he would refuse to sign with a team unless they also drafted Zach Hall. Thudd even went so far as announcing a hold out at his draft party, and storming out. While Thudd would eventually report to camp to play for the Luchadores, reports had surfaced that many of his teammates and coaches did not appreciate the drama that followed Thudd Kassel. Not only had Thudd threatened to hold out, but he had also attempted to start revolutions and riots among his draft class. Tijuana Luchadores’ GM Jimmy Dugan was quoted in regards to Thudd as:
Thudd Kassel would report to camp and play without further issue, but this level of drama could not have helped the team.
Thudd’s troubles continued to follow him throughout the season, with reports surfacing of the wayward player’s home being foreclosed. With over 67% of NSFL players going bankrupt 5 years after retiring, Thudd looks to follow in their wake.
However, despite the off the field concerns regarding the star LB, he has produced throughout the season. With two games remaining, Thudd has generated 106 tackles, 1 TFL, 2 sacks, 1 interception, and 3 PDs. Thudd has yet to generate a single fumble, with 12 out of 14 games played. Over his last 5 games Thudd has managed only 29 tackles, a drop-off from his production at the beginning of the season, where he managed 32 tackles in his first 3 games. Thudd’s production fall out in recent weeks has raised concerns, especially with Thudd, as he announced that he was focusing more on his speed than on his “run – stopping” reputation.
Despite Thudd’s confidence, this report is worried about a large change in play style so late in the season, as Tijuana needs to close out the season on a strong note to control home field advantage through the playoffs.
Looking ahead to the Ultimini playoffs and the NSFL draft, these next two games and the playoffs with be crucial to determine Thudd’s future. Will he turn the tide of his decreased production? Can he lead the Tijuana defense against their greatest test of the regular season? We look forward to seeing the DSFL season play out.
Quote:“He had some red flags and so called “character concerns”, what with him calling for a revolution 190 times a day,”
