Ladies and gentleman, welcome again to ESPNSFL. My name is Zerin Nandrews and this is episode number 11 of our “Thoroughfare to Glory” (TTG) saga, bringing you the life of Season 18 QB prospect, the “Portuguese Phenom”, Jay “Football” Cue.
It finally happened, our star player was drafted. And with some surprise, in the second round: the Arizona Outlaws just could not pass on him, and with their second pick of the draft, 18th overall, picked Jay Cue, the Portland Pythons Quarterback.
After hinting that he might not be present on the draft green room even though he had an invite, he missed the draft live and watched from home with his family in Portugal. Some teams saw this as somewhat of a pout by Jay.. Does he regret that choice?
Dirk Kirbstreit travelled this time to Phoenix, Arizona, to see how Jay has been dealing with this change.
Dirk - Hello again Jay!
Jay - Hey Dirk, thanks for meeting me here in Phoenix.
Dirk - No problem Jay. So, the Arizona Outlaws. Were you expecting them as your team for the future?
Jay - Arizona was definitely one of the teams that showed a lot of interest when we talked before the draft. My interview went well in my opinion, and I left the office pretty confident that i had made an impression. Still, on our pre-draft interview we talked about the QB needs in the NSFL and I knew that I would not be a first round pick, even if i had the talent for it, which i had. I know perfectly well that if i played on another position i would probably be top 3 in the draft. But i'm very happy the Outlaws took a chance on me in the second round and i could not contain my excitement when i got the call from Swag.
Dirk - You will have big shoes to fill, you do know that right?
Jay - I do Dirk. We all know what kind of player Andrew Reese is and i understand the responsability on my shoulders to be the chosen one to follow Reese. It will still take some time, even though Reese is regressing he still has the ability to lead the Outlaws, but i am practicing in the shadows ready to be called up.
Dirk - So this means you will stay in the DSFL playing for the Pythons?
Jay - Yes, at least one season, but probably for two more. We spoke about the sour taste left in my mouth after losing the Ultimini trophy last season by 1 point, so i'm more than happy to be helping the Pythons again. And i really hope i can get another MVP award, but this time together with an Ultimini.
Dirk - Still about the draft, we had some sure picks on the first round, but some teams still surprised us do you think?
Jay - I had predicted the first 2 picks, for me they were locked. But after that, teams really shuffled things up. But the ones I considered top 10 players were drafted there, even though some were drafted by different teams than expected.
Dirk - And what team do you think got the best draft?
Jay - Even though they traded back out of the first round, obviously the Arizona Outlaws had the best draft, because not only they drafted the best QB of the Season 18 class, they also drafted the bestest boy in Ruff Ruff with the 14th pick. And adding to the 2 best DSFL players last season, they gave a fair rub on the 28th pick with Samuel Bakhtiari. I mean, 3 picks, 3 gems. And this was only on the first 3 rounds. After that they even managed to get Vincent, Espinosa, Chungus, Thadsson... I mean, great job by the GMs and scouts, they had a great draft day.
Dirk - And what about you missing the cerimony, are you affected by the rumours that you were "butthurt" by teams probably no picking you on the first round and that is why you decided to stay in Portugal until after the draft?
Jay - You know i do not like to get into controversial debates, especially with people that just guesses things. I already stated before the draft the reasons that would probably make me miss the draft and the green room, so i will not add anything to it. I am not a player that desires to be on the TMZ front page.
Dirk - Well, thanks for your insight on the draft and your future Jay.
Jay - No problem Dirk, see you soon back in Portland.
And this is all the time we have for today, stay tuned for more interviews and information on our TTG. This was Zerin Nandrews, for ESPNSFL at the Portland Pythons training facility, goodbye, see you next time.
