Sean O'Leary entered the S18 DSFL Draft unsure what to expect. Since leaving his college career behind, the buzz surrounding his name wasn't what he thought it would be. He was actually quite worried that he may not even be on anyone's radar. Leading up to the draft, he was only contacted by two teams. First being the Portland Pythons. They showed a lot of interest in him from the start. They expressed how much they would love to bring him in and how his game would compliment the teams offense. They appreciated his team first mentality and body of work in college. They also alluded to their draft position (first overall) which made O'Leary feel like he had a good chance to go first overall. The conversation left O'Leary feeling really good. He felt that if the team with the first overall selection reached out to him so soon, that the other teams were not far behind.
A few days later, a scout from the Kansas City Coyotes organization had contacted him and requested to meet with him. The meeting was pretty cut and dry and mostly felt like a meet and greet to O'Leary. He never felt a since of true interest in his talents or that the Kansas City Coyotes had much of any intention of drafting him. By the time the meeting concluded he knew it was just a formality and had been a waste of his time.
To O'Leary's surprise, there was nothing after that. Had he said or done something that was keeping teams away? He was devastated when the reality of his situation hit him. His expectations had got the best of him and here he was feeling like a fool.
A day before the draft he began to hear rumors that the only team that showed interest in him was favoring a top cornerback out of Purdue University by the name of Willie B. Hardagain. O'Leary began to worry that there is a real possibility he may go undrafted. All this time and effort could have been for nothing. What was he going to do now? The thought was sickening, but like any true competitor he called it a night and prepared for the big day tomorrow.
After a restless night and not much sleep for many reasons. O'Leary got ready and made his way to the S18 DSFL Draft. After finding his seat, he got situated and prepared himself for the possible disappointment. As the DSFL commissioner took to the podium and greeted everyone, O'Leary began to feel anxious. Without much delay, he announced that the Portland Pythons had the first selection and were on the clock.
They wasted no time and made their way to the podium. They thanked the host city for their hospitality and congratulated the Ultimini Champions on a fantastic season. Without further adieu, the Portland Pythons are proud to select with the first overall pick from….Purdue University, Willie B. Hardagain! O'Leary's throat was now in his stomach. His fears were now manifesting into reality. He sat there in his seat as team after team passed on him. Some even three times over. By the time the first round ended, he had slid so far down his seat in a poor attempt to hide his disappointment. The second round picked up right where the first had left off. Team after team passed on him. He was contemplating just getting up and walking out. And as soon as the thought crossed his mind he heard his name.
The Portland Pythons were making their second selection in the draft. And with the 11th overall pick in the S18 DSFL Draft, the Portland Pythons select from Stanford University….wide receiver Sean O'Leary! Holy shit it happened, he thought. The rest of the draft was a blur. He was so happy to be drafted.
They expressed that their team needs shifted after our initial meeting and that they would need to use their first overall pick to address a bigger team need. They made multiple attempts to trade up in an effort to get me, but no one would make a deal. They were shocked, yet super happy to see me fall all the way to them in the second round and knew the choice was a no brainer.
As much as I was happy to go to a team that actually wanted me from the start. I wanted to make sure these other teams that passed over me multiple times felt stupid. So I came into camp with a chip on my shoulder. And guys that appeared to be more developed or skilled than me, I would outwork them. I trained harder and always stayed prepared. I knew that with dedication and focus I could make a name for myself and earn the steal of the draft.
Camp was a success. I earned my spot on the roster as the Portland Pythons number two wide receiver. I was very proud to be where I was. This was years of hard work and focus to get here. So I never took it for granted. And if I wanted to stay here, I would need to work harder than before.
Game 1 - Tijuana Luchadores @ Portland Pythons
I had a pretty quite performance for my first game as a professional football player. I would finish with 4 receptions for 32 yards, averaging 8 yards a reception, a long of 10 and no touchdowns. We would rally in the 4th quarter, but fall short and lose 23-20.
Game 2 - Portland Pythons @ Norfolk Seawolves
O'Leary took advantage of the mismatch in one on one coverage. With only 3 receptions, he totaled for 77 yards. Averaging 25.7 yards a reception and a long of 27. He would come up clutch late in the 4th quarter with a 25 yard TD reception to break a tie game. The Portland Pythons would hang on and win 20-13 on O'Learys gaming winning touchdown.
Game 3 - Portland Pythons @ Kansas City Coyotes
Unfortunately O'Leary would not find the end zone in game 3, but he did have a respectable night. 5 receptions for a total of 46 yards, an average of 9.2 a reception and a long of 14 yards. The game would be won on the ground as the Portland Pythons take this one 23-17.
Game 4 - Kansas City Coyotes @ Portland Pythons
The Portland Pythons wide receiver group would be held scoreless. O'Leary would have another strong game despite not scoring. 5 receptions for a total of 60 yards, averaging 12 yards a reception and a long of 22 yards. The rushing game of the Portland Pythons would once again lead them to victory with a big game from running back McTaco and his two touchdowns.
Game 5 - Portland Pythons @ San Antonio Marshals
The offense would only amount to 10 points in a disappointing loss. O'Leary would have another strong performance. Finding the end zone for the second time this season. 4 receptions for a total of 52 yards, averaging 13 yards and a long of 22. Currently tied for most touchdowns amongst wide receivers on the season.
Game 6 - Norfolk Seawolves @ Portland Pythons
Norfolk does not have an answer for O'Leary. The coverage against him in the redzone once again fails to find success. O'Leary exposed this all game long. With his best performance on the season. O'Leary would lead his team to a 31-26 win. He would finish the night with 5 receptions for a total of 43 yards, averaging 8.6 yards a reception, a long of 15 yards and two touchdowns.
Sean O'Leary currently leads all DSFL wide receivers in touchdowns with 4. Has a total of 310 yards on the season. One game shy of the half way point, O'Leary has shown that he may be the steal of the draft. Will his play continue or will his hot start, cool off? I believe he will continue to take advantage of the poor one on one matchups. His season could leave a lot of GMs regretting they passed on him multiple times.
