Ladies and gentleman, welcome again to ESPNSFL. My name is Zerin Nandrews and this is episode number 12 of our “Thoroughfare to Glory” (TTG) saga, bringing you the life of Season 18 QB prospect, the “Portuguese Phenom”, Jay “Football” Cue.
It has been a while since we talked to Jay. Last time we saw him, the NSFL draft had just occurred, where he was drafted by the Arizona Outlaws to be Andrew Reese's replacement in a couple of seasons. So, until he gets called up, he will be playing for the Portland Pythons in the DSFL. We are now 10 games into the DSFL Season 18, and the Pythons sit on top of the NFC North, with a 7-3 record.
Dirk Kirbstreit went to Portland to catch up with Jay.
Dirk - So Jay, long time no see.
Jay - Indeed Dirk. Thanks for being here.
Dirk - 10 games played, 7 - 3 record, what are your thoughts on the season so far?
Jay - It is really complicated to analyse this season Dirk. We have a decent record, top of our division, but the team sometimes looks like it is "stuttering". We started the season with a very tough loss, some questionable player choices did not help, and we seem to be struggling to take off and get a few consecutive wins to get our confidence up. Still, 4 games to go now and we want to win them all to get to the playoffs. Home field advantage for the playoffs I think it is pretty much impossible at this moment, but with the Kansas City Coyotes right on our tail, we just can't take our foot out of the gas. Things have not really been flowing like last year, but we might get there for the most important part of the season.
Dirk - And personally, how do you think your season has been?
Jay - Unlike last season, this time I am not going gung-ho as many times as I was. I worked a lot on the offseason on my turnover numbers and i have been trying to lower my INT numbers, and sucessfully so far. I still have a lot of weapons on offense that help me get my numbers up, but i do not think i will be able to go for the 22 passing TD's record like last season.
Dirk - Still, even though your numbers seem a little bit off regarding last season, they are not bad.
Jay - Definately Dirk. If you look to the stats, i still lead the DSFL in Passing TD's and QB rating, while on passing yards i might reach the same numbers as Season 17, 2400yds. But the most important thing to me and the team is the fact that i only have 3 picks in 10 games. That is a fantastic number and it helps the offense a lot, knowing that their routes will get the ball placed perfectly. I wish I had more passing yards and TDs obviously, but on the other hand I just got my first career rushing TD last night. I hope our playbook starts to include some more QB sneaks and rushing, to catch the opponent teams off guard.
Dirk - Do you feel like you can help the Pythons on the ground?
Jay - My idea was always that i could contribute with yards on the ground, maybe with some option plays. I am a strong dude, i have some speed, so i think i can truck some defenders to get us forward up the field. We will see on the next few games what happens.
Dirk - And for the rest of the season, what are your and the team objectives?
Jay - Those objectives are the same. Getting W's and securing a playoff berth. 4 games to go, we want 4 wins and we will wait on the Luchadores results. But we know home field advantage is pretty much going to them, but even if we eventually face them, there is still 5 games to get there.
Dirk - Ok Jay, thanks for giving us some of your time, looking forward to come back after a few more games.
Jay - No problem Dirk, come back anytime.
And this is all the time we have for today, stay tuned for more interviews and information on our TTG. This was Zerin Nandrews, for ESPNSFL at the Portland Pythons training facility, goodbye, see you next time.
