So I was bored and decided I wanted to play an Old school game so I took out my Madden 05 and thought hey, you know what would be a cool idea? If I made the New Orleans Second Line in this game and created all the players we have here and see how well I would do against the NFL from 2005. Well, that is what I decided to do and decided to write about as I do it!
First off, more background info. I first need to adjust the rosters. There are a couple of other ratings that Madden has that the NSFL does not have. Madden has acceleration, awareness, carrying, jumping, break tackle, kick return, injury and toughness. They also have stamina, but I count that as endurance.
What I decided was that I would just use certain ratings from NSFL twice or more often basically.
So:
acceleration = speed
awareness = intelligence
carrying = speed
jumping = hands
break tackle = strength
kick return = speed
injury = endurance
toughness = endurance
Now, obviously this changes some of the ratings compared to here, because other ratings matter differently. From what I can gather tackling matters much more in madden, endurance is basically pointless for the overall rating and speed is less influential. That creates a slightly different overall rating for guys on our team:
Me (99)
Stokeley (94)
Faux (91)
OL (91)
Slothface (91)
Rax (89)
Bode (88)
OL (87)
Ridley (86)
Taylor (85)
Von Matt (83)
Gump (82)
Andrews (80)
OL (77)
OL (76)
Fyodo (74)
Jones (74)
Ulysses (71)
Swift (71)
Rector (70)
Ironside (63)
Frost (61)
Bender (54)
Kwemen (54)
Bender is so low because I am using him at Tight End mostly, but his WR rating would be higher.
I am playing on All-Pro, which seems fair to me. Overall team rating was 81, which puts us somewhere in the middle surprisingly. Also I hate that my own player is rated the best, but if you think about Madden ratings compared to here, it makes a lot of sense. I obviously used the New Orleans Saints as a team.
So the first game, we played against the Seattle Seahawks. I started off the first drive with Bender and Fyodo both catching a ball and a first down. On the subsequent series, I was faced with a 3rd and 4 and ran the ball, but Gump got stopped immediately. Both teams exchanged punts for a bit, as I was still getting used to playing the game again.
The first quarter ended 0-0. Soon thereafter though, Deon Taylor stepped in front of a Hasselback pass and picked him off! NOLA ball!
Once again faced with a tough coaching decision, I was very pleased to be able to decide play calling myself compared to what happens in this league and decided to go for it again on 4th and inches on the opponents 46 yard line. I handed off the ball to Gump and he BREAKS LOOSE AND HE IS GONE!
46 yard rushing touchdown for Gump, 7-0 NOLA
After a field goal for us and a touchdown by Seattle, the game felt much closer again. But Slothface picked off Hasselback once more before the half to give NOLA the ball with a chance to get in field goal range in the last minute of the half.
Faced with a few seconds left on the clock now, I was deciding between either running the ball or risking a deeper pass. I decided to go for a play action pass and decided to take advantage of Bona'beri Jones' speed and I hit him in stride for the 62 yard touchdown pass as time expires in the half.
Half-time score 17-7 for NOLA.
After the half, Hasselback once more leads a successful drive for Seattle and brings them right near the goal-line. He tries to fit a pass into a tight window in the end zone but GETS PICKED OFF ONCE MORE by Xerxes Ridley who has some space and some lightning speed and he is GONE and returns the pick 102 yards for the touchdown! What a play.
After a few more drives, I hit Bona'beri Jones with another long pass and he made a guy miss in the open field and scored his second long touchdown, this time 68 yards!
Hasselback once more has a good drive and they go for it on 4th and goal and while we stop them, a defensive pass interference gives them a new first down and they get a touchdown on us.
Faced with 4 more minutes on the clock, I decide to run the ball to run the clock a bit, but Gump once again BREAKS LOOSE and has another big touchdown. 56 yards this time for the score.
In the end, NOLA wins the game 41-21 in a big first win.
Honestly, the long touchdowns made me wonder if I made the game too easy, but I think All-Pro is the 2nd highest difficulty. We will see if long touchdowns continue to be a thing. Without them, I definitely also struggled at times, so I don't see myself winning every game by any means.
Here are the stat lines for our team:
Francisco 14 of 27 for 262 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT
Gump 24 rushes for 146 yards, 2 TDs, 2 catches, 1 receiving yard
Jones 5 catches for 177 yards, 2 TDs
Rodriguez 3 catches for 32 yards
Fyodorovich 3 catches for 46 yards
Von Matt 1 catch for 6 yards
Ulysses 1 pancake
Taylor 12 tackles, 1 INT, 3 PDs
Rector 11 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 sack, 1 INT
Bode 10 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 PD
Slothface 10 tackles, 3 TFLs, 1 INT, 1 PD
Andrews 9 tackles
Swift 7 tackles
Faux 5 tackles, 2 TFLs, 1 sack
Ridley 4 tackles, 1 INT, 5 PDs, 1 TD
Stokeley 2 tackles, 1 TFL
Rax 2 tackles, 1 PD
Ironside 1 tackle
Frost 2/2 field goals, 5/5 XP - 42 yard average punt, 2 punts inside 20 of 7 punts
I also want to show some Seattle stats:
Hasselback 406 yards, 1 TD, 4 INTs
Alexander 87 yards, 2 TDs
Engram 7 catches for 144 yards
Robinson 6 catches for 103 yards
Taylor on defense 7 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 sack, 1 INT
Xerxes Ridley ended up with the Defensive Player of the Week award. While Gump had a good game at Running Back, consider the line of Tiki Barber in a different game, who won Offensive Player of the Week with 199 rushing yards and FOUR touchdowns. 2005 era NFL, am I right?
In week 2 we will play the 49ers, which will happen whenever I have time to sit down and play it and write about it.
