Welcome back to the new and not really improved "Behind Enemy Lines" where I take a look at defensive lineman around the league and see the impact they make in the opposing team's backfield. The formula is still probably flawed as many have suggested but I think it is a fun way to explore defensive line man. A group that almost needs it's own "Fair rubs" club.
To establish the impact values for TFL's and Sacks through three weeks of play I added the sum of the league's passing totals and divided it by pass attempts and did the same thing wish tackles for loss and rushing stats.
The fun experiment for this season will be to see how much the values will change after each irl week of play as I plan to update them for each future edition.
The Values:
One thing to keep in mind is as defenses play better these values will decrease. So it almost works against the formula.
TFL Impact: 4.13 (? .04)
The league has rushed collectively for 3910 yards on 947 carries. So on average we can assume that a tackle for loss prevents a rushing gain of 4.13 yards. This is down .04 yards from the end of S18's value of 4.17.
Sack Impact: 6.45 (? .61)
The league has passed collectively for 7017 yards on 1087 passing attempts. A sack can be assumed to on average prevent 6.45 yards. This is also down from S18's end of season value by a whopping .61 yards!
Forced Fumble/Fumble Recovery Bonus: 10 points
We will continue to give bonus points for both FF and FR's despite the arguments against FR's I decided to keep them in as a fumble recovery is still an impact play and not all FF's are created equal as not every one of them results in a turnover.
The Rankings
Pre-Bonus Adjusted
1st) Maurice Virtanen: 35.37
The Finnish Monster has already been a one man wrecking crew behind the line of scrimmage starting the season off with a crazy 4 tackles for loss against PHI in a tough loss. He followed this up with another great game getting a TFL and a Sack against the Butchers. In the Baltimore nail-biter he added another 2 TFL's to make him head and shoulders above his competition.
2nd) Fabricio Baldari: 27.11
Baldari established himself as the best defensive line rookie last year and has followed that up with a hot start to the S19 season landing him the second spot in the rankings. The highlight of his season so far has been his 3 TFL game against The Outlaws.
3rd) D'Pez Poopsie: 25.84
In his 9th season you think the old man would start to show signs of slowing down but after finishing 3rd in the pre-bonus rankings last season, he debuts at the same spot. Baldari wasn't the only one to have a big day against the Outlaws as D'Pez collected 2 sacks as well.
4th) Mack Arianlacher: 22.98
The 1st overall pick and rookie sensation "The Lachness Moster" has not dissapointed NOLA fans this season as his impact could be felt early. His best game was in the Second Line's opening loss to OCO where he collected 1 TFL and a sack.
5th-tied) Ryan Leaf Jr.: 21.18
Despite 8 sacks from the interior last season Leaf only finished 16th in the rankings as he failed to find a TFL. This season on a new team the man has collected 2 sacks and 2 TFL's and has been a lone standout on an otherwise poor defense. Last game against the Yeti, Leaf collected a sack and TFL.
5th-tied) Dick Wizardry : 21.18
Wizardry could have came out and coasted on his retirement tour after finishing 2nd in the pre-bonus rankings last season and 1st with the bonus. Wizardry is playing like an old man that just found the stash of viagra in the retirement home. His game against OCO is his standout of the season with 1 sack and 1 TFL
7th) Grayson Kuusela : 19.38
Kuusela is following up his 10 sack campaign by being on pace for 13 this season.
8th-tied) Lo Rax: 18.85
8th-tied)Nero Alexander: 18.85
8th-tied) Marc Spector: 18.85
Bonus Adjusted Rankings
Until next week!
