Who doesn’t love the draft? It’s that magical time where players find their new homes and the feel-good stories come out. Or at least it usually is. Sometimes things sour before they even begin, but we are not going to focus on that. This series is meant to be positive all around and bring good vibes. I know that some people complain about how most mock drafts and draft recaps love every pick. I get where they are coming from, but this league is meant to be fun. I would hate being a new player and see people saying negative things about the team that just drafted me. So, taking all that into consideration, my hope is to rarely if ever write negative comments about the draft-eligible players. If you are looking for more critical work, feel free to write your own.
My goal is to do weekly updates on where my draft board stands. With the index being slightly wonky, I wasn’t sure about starting this week with only two games under way in the DSFL. I decided that I would go ahead anyways as I think it will be more beneficial than waiting 6 games in to analyze things. This first board will be rough around the edges, but I’m hoping in time that I will figure out what direction to take this.
As for how to rank prospects, there are a few different criteria I have in mind. The primary measure will be TPE. It is the easiest thing to directly compare. Players start at different times, though, so TPE will not be the only valuable measure. A player that created at the trade deadline vs one that did two days before the draft will look quite different, so other things like discord activity and the player’s update page will be taken into consideration as well. I’m still working out a way to measure activity in a locker room as well. I think it plays a huge role, as locker room presence is a big factor. I am only in one DSFL locker room though, so this will be figured out along the way.
Position value will also play a role. As much as I want to put a top TPE earning kicker high up, it doesn’t feel quite realistic. Sim stats will play a minor role as they do offer insight into how a player might do at the next level. Lastly, experience as a recreate along with being in other sim leagues will also play a part. While I am only in this league, I will figure out a way to see if people are in other sim leagues and take that into consideration along the way. For now, I will lean heavily on TPE until those other factors become more apparent.
Alright, so my guidelines are set for now (this is a work in progress). Let’s take a look at Jay’s way too early Draft Board! (Note: current TPE totals are rough estimates with me going through every update page for now until official updates happen.)
#1 – Darrel Williams - RB Minnesota Grey Ducks (Ry_)
The first overall pick in the DSFL draft gets the top spot on my first big board. Darrel has been around since the trade deadline and has progressed quite nicely. He is on pace to be the highest TPE earner of the S20 class and I would guess he comes in somewhere around 240 (currently at 185). He is active on the forums and twitter. There are a couple other players who could wind up in the top spot, but for now it’s all Williams.
#2 – Jah Bur’Berry - WR Portland Pythons (soryantyler)
Jah has the third highest TPE in the class right now at 173, so he will be looking at an early first round pick. Top earning receivers are a welcome edition to any team, so Bur’Berry will likely remain in the top couple spots on my draft board. Soryantyler is a veteran sim league, great locker room guy and a consistent earner.
#3 – Galf Wilf - LB Portland Pythons (Moosecop)
Galf comes in as the top defensive player on the way too early board. At 127 TPE, he is the highest earner that was not created at the trade deadline. Galf has put in two monster games so far this season and is average 15.5 tackles per game. Let that sink if for a moment. This Linebacker covers the whole field and makes play after play. The ways things stand, Moosecop will be required to be drafted by Arizona as their coGM. Lucky Arizona.
#4 – Awkward Sexjoke - DE Myrtle Beach Buccaneers (AdamS)
The only thing awkward about Sexjoke is his name because his game speaks for itself. Though he only has a few tackles thus far, every one of them has been impactful. AdamS is a top earner and sits at 119 TPE right now. The Austin Copperheads will be required to draft Sexjoke, but just like before he will be included in the big board along the way.
#5 – Desmond Scarlett - CB Portland Pythons (Unicorn)
Currently up to 120 TPE, Desmond Scarlett is on the fast track to be the best secondary player in the class. I think it is possible to see high rise throughout the season and could definitely crack the top 3. Unicorn is a well-established veteran who knows how to create top players and is another great locker room presence. Also, take note of how many Pythons are at the top right now. They are poised to do much better than their early season woes suggest.
#6 – Randy Vuxta - WR Tijuana Luchadores (roastfuego)
Randy has been an awesome presence in the league so far. He had a great couple of “pre-season” games that didn’t officially count, but he still performed well in the official first two games as well. He has been a great presence in the Tijuana locker room and is highly active on twitter. Keep an eye on this touchdown machine.
#7 – Thor Kirkby - LB Minnesota Grey Ducks (Ascolap)
Thor has a nice update coming that will see his TPE jump up to 112. Thor has also had a nice start to the season putting up respectable numbers with 15 tackles and a sack. I expect him to lead the Grey Ducks’ defensive prospects and continue to put up solid numbers.
#8 – Victor Moreno - CB Tijuana Luchadores (GreenArmy)
Another victim of having awesome stats not count for “pre-season” games. Moreno’s 2 interception game may not count officially, but he still came back in the re-sim and got a pick in week 2. He also has a decent number of tackles and a pass deflection. GreenArmy has a big update coming in and he will soon be a player that QBs should think twice before throwing at. Don’t be surprised if he challenges Scarlett as top CB of the class.
#9 – Venus Powers - K/P Portland Pythons (Baron1898)
Venus has the most TPE in the whole class at 186 right now. It feels a bit early to have a kicker on the board still, but it’s hard not to. Baron is a veteran of the league. Highly active on Discord, has a league job and is a great locker room presence. I’m not convinced that he will go in the first round, but it wouldn’t feel right not recognizing the effort put forth.
#10 – Bobby Boucher - DE Myrtle Beach Buccaneers (BigUnitBabs)
BigUnitBabs comes in at 10 in the way too early board. He is at 109 TPE right now, putting him slightly behind Sexjoke at the moment. There is a lot of high-level defensive players in the class and Bobby Boucher is one of them. Being a PBE crossover also gives him a leg up. We all love a true underdog story and we’ve got one in the making with Boucher. From water boy to first round pick? I guess we will find out soon enough.
#11 - Tash Thompson - WR Minnesota Grey Ducks (casserole)
Tash is another great receiver in this class. It’s exciting to see so many potential stars in the making. Her stats are slightly behind Bur’Berry and Vuxta right now, but she is at a solid 120 TPE and has the pedigree to catch up to them. She is active and has a nice twitter presence as well.
#12 – Kyle Idlewyld - DE Tijuana Luchadores (Kyle)
If I had to a make a guarantee on one player that will finish higher on the board than where they start at, it would be Kyle Idlewyld. The guy is an absolute wild man, in a good way! He is an active locker room presence, has a nice media series going and is on twitter. He has great confidence and plays a position of need. Oh, and he has a safety already this season.
#13 – Jacoby Clay - WR Myrtle Beach Buccaneers (Vexatious)
Vex, not to be confused with Bex, has a big update on the way. This marks the last of what appears to be the top 4 receivers of the class. Jacoby edges out Tash in early season stats so far, which shows promise for where he might finish by the end of the season. Vex is set up to be a potential steal come draft time.
#14 – Reggie Culbertson - DE Portland Pythons (evryday)
Reggie comes in as an early 2nd round pick at the moment. Normally active defensive lineman always find their way into the first round or early second. Currently sitting at 14, Reggie fits that mold. The only that thing prevents evryday from vaulting up is the stiff competition at the position this class. Either way, DEs are always a commodity and good things are in store. Evryday has been one of the best waiver pick-ups this season as he is familiar with the league already. He is also active on discord and receptive to build suggestions. I love the d-line in this class.
#15 – Siddhu Sarvepally - RB Myrtle Beach Buccaneers (siddhus)
I will need to learn the pronunciation of this name, because he will be getting his name called in the draft. Siddhus was the 21st pick of the DSFL draft and is already on pace to surpass that mark in the NSFL draft. He has been an active member and has a large TPE update on the way. Siddhu is currently the number 2 RB in the class, with his teammate closely on his tail. It will be interesting to see how their seasons play out.
#16 – Warren Stephens - SS Myrtle Beach Buccaneers (Ephenssta)
Warren is a center field strong safety who has been steady growing early on this season. This looks likes another good waiver pick up for the Buccaneers as Stephens provides extra help on the back end. Having Dream lock down one receiver at all times has given Stephens some early freedom, leading him to already picking up a sack. Being the only safety in the class, he does get a boost in his value.
#17 – Ricardo Rose - RB Myrtle Beach Buccaneers (riddlingminion)
Ricardo Rose is the second punch of the Buccaneers backfield. Rose has been updating consistently so far will be a valuable offensive weapon moving forward. It will be interesting to see if either Rose or Sarvepally establish themselves as the lead dog, or if they become a dynamic running back by committee setup. Ricardo is more of an all-purpose back, where as Siddhu is a speed back. These two roles should compliment each other nicely no matter how the carries shake out.
#18 – Inspectah Deck - LB Tijuana Luchadores (W.Sconnie)
Deck is a speed rushing linebacker for the Luchadores who has been making nice progress thus far. He has a presence in the locker room as well as a twitter account. He has found a knack at getting into the backfield and making plays, as he already has a couple tackle for losses to start the season. He also has recovered a fumble and has a pass deflection, showing he has a nose for the ball.
#19 – Oliver McWigglebutts - DT Minnesota Grey Ducks (MaxTheDog)
I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that McWigglebutts has the best render of this class. If you have a moment, go check it out. This run stuffing defensive lineman’s college was the shit (South Harmon Institute of Technology), so I’d like to think they he is friends with Jonah Hill and Justin Long. Through 2 games, the Grey Ducks have the best rush defense in the NSFL and McWigglebutts gets some credit for that.
#20 – Silver Banana - K/P Minnesota Grey Ducks (golden_apricot)
It’s Bananas! B-a-n-a-n-a-s. I have to imagine this is the chant that rings out in Minnesota every time Silver Banana lets off a bomb. He has a respectable 87 TPE thus far, which puts him just ahead of Reggie. The positional difference is the only reason he is lower on the board. He has been perfect on extra points and field goals so far and ranks second right now, behind returning vet Jackson. (Also, thank you for whoever created Manuel Locatelli as a kicker for KC).
#21 – Ben Kenobi -TE Tijuana Luchadores (DeathOnReddit)
Old Ben got a bit of a late jump and has been a nice waiver pick up for Tijuana. He will be suiting up for his first games this week and I am excited to see what he can do. He is a vertical threat that will look to stretch the field and take the top of the defense. It will be interesting to see if Kenobi can force his way through and open up even more field for Vuxta, or vice versa. DeathOnReddit has been in the locker room and has a nice update coming, so his value will continue to grow. He also has 5 Ultimus trophies under his belt.
#22 – Barnabas Cole - DE Tijuana Luchadores (ITBret42)
Cole is the other defensive end pairing with Kyle Idlewyld. Throw in Inspectah Deck and you have quite the pass rush coming at opposing offenses. Though he has been fairly quiet early on, but he does have a good update in. He also has a tackle for loss so far, so there is reason to think he can post solid numbers this season.
#23 – David Donaldson -TE Myrtle Beach Buccaneers (Kcobb9)
I’m not totally sure if Kcobb9 has been active recently, but he did put in a good early update that gives him more TPE than the remainder of the class. He is only 7 TPE shy of Kenobi right now, so if he is active, he would have a great chance of being the top tight end in the class.
#24 – Dre Uzond - CB Portland Pythons (Nuk)
Although Nuk retired his player, I threw him on the list right now. I would expect that he will continue to fall down the board, but you never know if a player decides to return. He was highly active on Discord and showed early promise. If he comes back and mellows out a bit, he would be worth a late flyer.
#25 – Hal Fassingit - DE Minnesota Grey Ducks (tlk742)
Hals looks like a player who got a bit of a late jump, but he is active and growing right now. He does have an update on the way, so I think it’s safe to assume his draft stock will rise. Playing with Thor Kirkby should also open Hal’s opportunity to make some plays. He is a balanced defensive end and has been working hard on his strength and speed.
#26 – Vince Hammerson - K/P Myrtle Beach Buccaneers (Channel88)
Vince was the 25th pick in the DSFL draft and starts out at roughly the same spot on the big board. He will have plenty of time to prove his kicking abilities for Myrtle Beach this season. As he continues to update, he could push Banana for the #2 kick in the class.
#27 – Darnell Johnson -WR Portland Pythons (dylanjj37)
Darnell does have one update in, so he does finish ahead of those who currently have the base 50 TPE. I don’t think he has been active since then, but we can hope he picks up where he left off. He does have nice stats so far including 2 touchdowns, so it would be great to see what he can do with more TPE.
#28 – Colonel Tushfinger -RB Tijuana Luchadores (bovovovo)
The last spot on the way too early big board goes to Colonel Tushfinger. He is the only player at the base 50 TPE that made the list. He recently recreated, so I have a good feeling he will be active. The league is very excited to see him back. To quote Slm, “WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”. I had to take out 4 Os to make that not have weird spacing. Regardless, I am excited to see what bovovovo can do.
That wraps up my first draft board! My goal is to update things weekly, right up to the draft. You can bet a lot of things will change throughout the season and I will do my best to keep tabs on them. I want to thank Cory and Huskies for getting back to me and providing info on their teams. I also want to thank Isa for pointing me in the right direction. If you have any suggestions about what you would like to see, feel free to reach out to me. I have some other ideas in the works, it will just take time to get things how I want them. I also plan on doing a similar thing when it comes times for the DSFL draft, though I think it will be less in depth with how fast it seems to move. Lastly, my whole point of doing this all is to try and make the draft a more personable experience. If I got anything wrong or I left something out, please share that with me so I can get better.
