The Yellowknife Wraiths enter the Season 2 expansion draft in an awkward position: with 13 players at 85 TPE or more, and only 12 slots to protect them. Yellowknife has a hard decision to make, knowing that whichever player is exposed is certain to leave.
Obviously, Yellowknife’s first priority will be to protect their leadership group in MVP candidate Bubba Nuck and temporary GM Mat Akselsen. While Akselsen’s tenure won’t necessarily last until the expansion draft, the team clearly trusts him and might look to him in the future for a leadership role, and he does have a No Movement Clause that would need to be waived where the Wraiths to want to expose him.
It would be absolute madness for the Wraiths to expose Chris Orosz, the winner of their preseason quarterback duel - the Wraiths seem set with him at the helm of the offense. Similarly, the Wraiths are not likely to part with the loser of that battle, Alexandre LeClaire, who will act as the Wraiths #1 receiver and kick returner until Josh Garden re-signs.
Yellowknife is already likely to lose a key part of their secondary assuming that they cannot figure out a deal for the likely #1 pick in the Season 2 draft, Dermot Lavelle. With the proliferation of receiver talent, Yellowknife cannot afford to lose either Dirk Cutter or Alex Hansen, who would likely slot into Lavelle’s spot as the #2 cornerback for the team.
Without any inside information into the Yellowknife GMs meeting, it would seem likely that Yellowknife exposes either one of their Linebackers or Offensive Linemen, figuring that rookies can fill open slots, or rolls the dice on a new Defensive End to fill the shoes of Jason Spearhead, who has not been seen in the Yellowknife gym since June 4th. That would mean exposing one of Reginald Hampshireton or D’Brickashaw Ferguson - Sinjin Flimjollywop is too valuable in coverage, and Lindarius Shelton and Jogn Floggity have too much of a lead in development to justify their exposure.
Of course, knowing that Yellowknife’s leadership team has resigned themselves to lose a Defensive End, Linebacker or Offensive Lineman may open the door for a side deal - assets being sent to the Wraiths in the interest of exposing a more valuable member of a position group. Las Vegas General Manager and Yellowknife Traitor Tyler Varga has shown a willingness to wheel and deal in the leadup to the draft, having already traded for two members of his future receiving corps in Gabriel Tenzini and RFFO Mademe, and the Philadelphia Liberty leadership team lead by Lincoln Jefferson still have a full set of draft assets to catch up.
MY GUESSES:
Protect: Bubba Nuck (RB), Ricky Maddox (TE), Dirk Cutter (CB), Chris Orosz (QB), Reginald Hampshireton (LB), Jogn Floggity (OL), Sinjin Flimjollywop (LB), Mat Akselsen (OL), Archibald Booter (K), Lindarius Shelton (LB), D’Brickashaw Ferguson (OL), Alexandre LeClaire (WR), Alex Hansen (CB)
Expose: Jason Spearhead (DE), Jack Stats (RB), Rolf Larsendorf (TE), Adam Bennett (WR), Trent Bender (DT), Henri Rivere (CB), Wizard Stephen (WR), Pablo Sanchez (S), Ryan Ellis (K)
Lose: Josh Garden (WR) - FA; Tyler Varga (DE) - Trade to LVL; Mark Ramrio (DT) - Trade to LVL
