It was an early November night in Yellowknife when the Yeti came toppling from their high. The Yeti finished the first half of Season 1 of the NSFL with the best record in the league, sitting at 6-1. They rode a three game winning streak in to Yellowknife hoping to defeat the Wraiths and start the second half of the season off with a bang. They planned to finish the regular season with the best record in the league and pursue the Ultimus trophy in the post season. The Yeti received a brutal awakening in Yellowknife as the Wraiths crushed them in a 29-7 blowout, which was the greatest margin of defeat the Yeti would face all season. The loss felt like the low point of the season for Yeti, but little did they realize the darkness was just beginning.
After the Wraiths snapped the Yeti’s three game winning streak, they kicked off a three game losing streak. The Yeti’s next game was an embarrassing home loss as they ended the San Jose Sabercats’ six game losing streak. Then, the Yeti traveled to Orange County and could only muster six points. The Yeti, once the best team in the league, were now in a tailspin as it looked like their momentum from the first half of the season had dissipated. The Yeti hosted the Outlaws, who had recently replaced the Yeti as the top team in the standings, and came away with a surprising victory. The Yeti looked to finally be back on track after beating the league’s top team. But then they traveled to San Jose and once again lost to the league’s worst team. The Yeti were losing grip on the playoff home field advantage which looked to be a sure thing when the season’s first half came to an end as they were now tied with the Wraiths in the standings. The Yeti hoped to assert themselves against a playoff team as they traveled to Arizona, but they were shut out in prime time and the Wraiths took the lead in the NSFC. The Yeti, once the best team in the league, were now a laughingstock. After posting the league’s best record in the first seven games by starting 6-1, the Yeti had been the league’s worst team in the following six games as they went 1-5. The Yeti still had a chance to reclaim home field advantage against the Wraiths in the playoffs: they had to beat the Wraiths in a winner take all matchup in Colorado. Looking at predictions around the league, few people gave the reeling Yeti a chance against a red-hot Wraiths team who had won four games in a row. However, the Yeti’s players had one though on their mind: redemption. Their second half of the season woes began against the Wraiths and they finally had a chance to redeem themselves. If the Yeti came together and beat the Wraiths, all would be forgiven, as they would reclaim the home field advantage in the playoffs that they had nearly choked away.
The Yeti struck first against the Wraiths as they scored two field goals and jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. The Wraiths answered with a field goal to cut the lead to just 3 points as the Yeti held a 6-3 lead entering half time. The Yeti finally broke out in the third quarter as they scored two touchdowns and took a 20-3 lead over the Wraiths. The Wraiths scored their first touchdown late in the third quarter, but were unable to score in the fourth quarter and ultimately fell 20-10. Despite the tumult of the season, the Yeti still managed to take the NSFC regular season title. However, their redemption was not complete yet. They Yeti were still considered heavy underdogs by analysts around the league entering the playoff matchup against the Wraiths. Many believed that the Yeti’s Week 14 victory was a fluke and that the Wraiths were still the better team. With a playoff victory, the Yeti could silence the doubters and redeem themselves from the ugly second half of their season. The season appeared to be in jeopardy as the Yeti trailed 3-6 at halftime, but they Yeti managed to rally and score the game’s final ten points while shutting out the Wraiths in the second half to win 13-6. It is not time to rest yet as the Yeti will face an uphill battle to beat the Outlaws and win the Ultimus trophy. However, the Yeti have thrived as underdogs so far this postseason and could erase all of the sour memories of the season’s second half if they win the Ultimus trophy they were favored to win after the first chapter of the season.
