William Lim was born on June 9th, 1999 in Seoul, the capital city of South Korea. As a pre- school age child, William was often described as a shy and bookish kid, usually opting to stay inside and read books instead of socializing with other kids, or playing outside. His parents, concerned that william might not develop necessary social skills for his later life(Korean society value social skills like interaction and adaptability to new environment above all others), decided to have him attend local little league baseball team, as baseball was one of the few things William liked apart from the books. William liked the little league experience very much, and soon became a crucial part of the team. He played pitcher at first, doubling at shortstop, which soon became his permanent position thereafter.
William proceeded to play baseball throughout elementary and middle school, and became a highly sought after shortstop prospect-top 3 in the nation- in his middle school graduating class. And then, he shocked most of the high school baseball community by choosing to attend KMLA, a school more known for its academics than its baseball program. William later explained the reasoning behind this shocking decision as "student athlete programs in Korea are way different from what you expect in the U.S. They strongly encourage you to dedicate your time only on baseball. So there was little to no concern about individual student athlete's academic performance. I saw many ex- student athletes fall into poverty after their athletic career turned out to be unsuccessful because of their lack of other career choices. And that lack of career choice was wholly because of major athletic high school programs disregarding their athlete's education. I didn' want that. I wanted to have something to choose from even if my baseball career turns out to be unsuccessful. And at the time, KMLA was the only program that didn't demand I dedicate my whole time to baseball, so it was an obvious choice."
In KMLA, William was given the nickname 'the vacumm cleaner' as he made numerous impossible- looking catches in shortstop position. But his mediocre throw power and low batting average(.256, .267, .269 respecively in his three years) held him from being drafted to the Korean Baseball League, despite his pro level-according to many scouts-defending ability, and his long defensive highlight reels.
However, william was not without choices like numerous others despite this setback. As he did quite well in KMLA's illustrious academic program, he was accepted to attend seoul university as a political science major. He had a brief stint with the university's baseball team, before quitting the sport altogether early into his sophomore season. William talked about this decision as"a necessary one, as my batting average didn't improve in college. I was ready to pursue my other career choice, which was law and possibly politics."
And one day, the coach from the university's football team approached william, suggesting that he play as a wide receiver. William, who was confident with running and catching, accepted the offer. William proved to be a good wide receiver, living up to his nickname. He recorded 550 yards and three receiving TDs in his shortened sophomore season, and 1,058 yards and 7 TDs in his junior season. And he started to receive some scouter attention as his gameday footages and his one handed catch training footage gained popularity in youtube. Currently, William graduated early from college and is in training regimen focusing on adapting to pro level as he prepares for the big leap from a college athlete to a pro nes, following his declaration to participate in the DSFL draft.
