Much has been made of the Grey Ducks’ unusual breakout Running Back, “Baby” Yoda. The little green tyke has captured the hearts of the league and, by all means, has well-surpassed expectations after many experts wrote him off as unfit for the DSFL due to his small size. Over the course of the S20 DSFL season, he amassed 1410 rushing yards (2nd highest in the league) and 7 Touchdowns while averaging 5.1 yards per carry (tying him for 3rd highest YPC). And all of this came while he was part of a four-RB committee, lovingly dubbed by the Minnesota fan base as the Four Ducksmen. On top of his rushing performance, he also caught 20 passes for 166 receiving yards, the most of any RB this season. Perhaps most surprising of all were the 6 pancakes he caused last season, though, to be fair, some of his targets have gone as far as to discount the pancakes as trips or even “front chop blocks”, but that still hasn’t stopped these hilarious moments from turning into gifs online.
Yoda was drafted #24 overall in the DSFL draft and. even there, some suggested that it may have been too high of a pick, but the “Marvelous Munchkin” entered the season looking to prove his detractors wrong. By all metrics, he seems to have done just that. However, the stats have a curious story behind them as, despite his breakout performance this season, word going around among the scouts has been that Yoda has been overwhelmed by the strain of competition and found himself wearing down quickly once the season hit its mid-point. Minnesota coaching staff began to notice signs of Yoda’s development slowing down and he went from a potential top prospect to being looked at as just another RB in a large class. It also didn’t help his draft stock when sensational CB Dax Frost announced that he would be moving to RB as he has proven to DSFL officials that he could indeed do it all. Perhaps this was a sign that Yoda’s critics were right and he simply wasn’t cut out for a career in pro football. He was always a long shot. Some even speculated that his reported height of 5’6” was exaggerated as he easily appeared much shorter in stature when standing next to his teammates on the sidelines.
But rumor and speculation can be a funny thing.
Reports of Yoda taking time off in the offseason were indeed inaccurate and began to spiral out of control, taking on a life of their own. There was talk of the Grey Ducks’ Emerald Emissary spending the offseason vacationing in Disney World rather properly training in the offseason. Teammates were already critical of Yoda’s unusual diet of chicken nuggets and chocolate milk and worried that their beloved “Little Green” lacked the discipline and understanding necessary to last on the field. Days after the Ultimus, Yoda did disappear, taking a sabbatical to prepare for the draft. But instead of traveling somewhere to unwind and leave behind the stress of the season, Yoda returned to his home country of Dagobah, where he began training in the harsh environments of the mysterious country’s dangerous swamps. According to those closest to him, Yoda has become concerned that life in the US had made him soft and he wanted to return to his roots, so that he could remember what motivated him to become a great football player in the first place. When he first stepped on the field, he was inspired by difficult memories of the country and the toll that it had taken on him in his youth, but as time passed, so did those memories and soon Yoda found himself growing content with his place in life. He had come so far already and the critics felt that he has well surpassed his goals, but to become complacent and just rest of his laurels would ultimately lead to those that doubted him being right in the long run. And that wasn’t something he wanted.
Late last night, Yoda returned to the US for the first time in months and has reportedly told friends that he feels better than ever. The long days spent surviving in the wilds of Dagobah have left him feeling even stronger than before. Many NSFL scouts will undoubtedly remain skeptical, but there are those who are starting to believe that whichever team drafts Yoda will end up with a future star on their hands. The future is still uncertain, but at the very least, Yoda’s fanbase still finds itself waiting patiently for new gifs of the so-called “Sultan of Smol” piling up pancakes on players twice his size.
