Have you heard about Sandro Ryeu? The kid that played his first season as a starter for Heidelberg. Many of you might have been a bit disappointed for his underwhelming appearance in the Europe Bowl but you might want to pay attention to Ryeu's DSFL draft stock development.
About Ryeu: Ryeu played a Hybrid between linebacker and defensive end in college racking up 205 tackles, 11.5 QB Sacks and 25 tackles for loss. These are impressive numbers for a first-year starter! The main problem with Ryeu is that teams don't really know what they're getting that's why he got his nickname "MisterRyeus" by the media. Ryeu is a clear speed rushing type of defensive end who showed some problems with big offensive linemen. Heidelberg played a 3-4 Base Defense a scheme Ryeu seems just to be made for.
Ryeu shined with great quickness, good hip mobility, and a relentless work ethic. He is a very fast player, one of the fastest among the prospects. But will this be enough to get playing time in the DSFL with some tough competition? It's unclear if his success in his last year of college will transfer to the DSFL.
let's look at the draft picture:
There are 28 Defensive End Prospects in this year's DSFL draft. I will categorize them into their believed archetypes.
Power Rusher: Nathan Bourne, Danshawn Jenkins, Landon Moore, Farrior Deschain, Slinky Claxton, D'Brickashaw Cannon, Anthony Brewer, Buster Brownce, Jimmy Frackerson
9 Prospects
Speed Rusher: Ismael Sanchez, Meep Meep, DeShawn Jones, Mario VonPebbles, Will-Barry Underground, A.J. Warren, Gabriel Graves, Frank Ngyuen, Slim Pickens, Simeon Works, Sandro Ryeu
11 Prospects
Balanced Rusher: Ayden Bayden, Chauncey Morrison, Patrik Money, Troen Egghands, James Cho, Danielle Hunter, Rainman Legends
7 Prospects
Run Stopper: Justice Wolfe
1 Prospect
It should be a fun draft for teams with needs in the Pass Rushing sector. But here is the Problem for Ryeu. The most competition is between the Speed Rushing defensive ends. Not to mention the large group of defensive ends.
With the two expansion teams coming into the DSFL there are more possible landing spots for Defensive Ends in the upcoming draft. These Teams will have 2 draft picks and after that will be able to claim players like normal. The Birddogs will have to use the second pick for GM Gucci's Running back. The Norfolk Seawolves and the Tijuana Luchadores are also likely to be looking for some key defensive line players.
The fact is, there is not much room for all these players. It will be a hard battle for these D-linemen to get their roster spot. Danielle Hunter is believed to be a top draft prospect.
The question is if a team is willing to take a risk and give the unknown Ryeu a shot. Reportedly he already talked to some of the DSFL Scouts. Ryeu among others might become a steal in the late rounds or after the draft and maybe become one of the most interesting position groups to watch this offseason.
