Welcome to the week 2 S21 DSFL Power Rankings.
I've compiled rankings from the DSFL GMs and the wider community to create a weighted system which should give a relatively balanced results and is protected from a single team brigading the vote to put themselves to the top. It assumes people aren't lying about who they are or who they play for.
Overall Community Rankings
#1: = Minnesota Grey Ducks (1-1) (1.56)
#2: = Myrtle Beach Buccaneers (2-0) (1.94)
#3: = Tijuana Luchadores (1-1) (3.31)
#4: = Kansas City Coyotes (1-1) (4.19)
#5: = Norfolk Seawolves (1-1) (4.50)
#6: = Dallas Birddogs (1-1) (6.44)
#7: = London Royals (1-1) (6.50)
#8: = Portland Pythons (0-2) (6.69)
So after two weeks of games what's changed? Well not much really, everyone seems fairly convinced about their original scoring. While the gap between Myrtle Beach and Minnesota has closed, the community are not convinced that the extra win makes them a better team.
Three clear tiers remain: Underneath the Buccaneers and the Grey Ducks, are the Luchadores, Coyotes, and Seawolves; Finally the Pythons are joined by our new teams the Royals and Birddogs.
Rankade Rankings
For a more impartial comparison I've also used Rankade to rank the teams based on the results.
#1: 2111 - UP 1 Myrtle Beach Buccaneers
#2: 2106 - DOWN 1 Minnesota Grey Ducks
#3: 2040 - = Tijuana Luchadores
#4: 1942 - = Kansas City Coyotes
#5: 1919 - = Portland Pythons
#6: 1878 - = Norfolk Seawolves
#7: 1228 - = Dallas Birddogs
#8: 1227 - = London Royals
People might be surprised by some of the rankings, but Rankade takes a wider view considering Portland's good record before S20, and Norfolk's poor record historically.
The ranking algorithm will also take a few weeks to accurately establish the rankings for Dallas and London as the starting ranking score is low relative to the other teams.
It has given Myrtle Beach the edge based on the two wins. However I suspect that is in part because Minnesota's loss came to Dallas, who are ranked particularly low for the reasons mentioned above. The system will need a bit of time to callibrate to the expansion teams and losses to them in the first half of the season may get punished.
Current Ratings
How differently do different groups vote?
The GM votes were fairly close to the overall rankings, with the only difference putting Portland on a par with London. There were also interesting patterns such as one GM ranking Myrtle Beach as the worst team in the league.
The Player and Former Player rankings combined ranked Myrtle Beach as the top team in the league. Interestingly of the next tier of teams: Kansas City, Norfolk and Tijuana, they ranked Tijuana last.
Homerisms
There was still a lot of own team favouritism going on. Portland and Kansas City (and Minnesota too of course) deserve some credit for being the most accurate in ranking themselves. Here you can see how each team ranked themselves compared to the weighted rank score.
Dallas Birddogs - self rank: 5 - actual rank: 6.44
Kansas City Coyotes - self rank: 1 - actual rank: 4.19
London Royals - self rank: 1 - actual rank: 6.5
Minnesota Grey Ducks - self rank: 1 - actual rank: 1.56
Myrtle Beach Buccaneers - self rank: 1 - actual rank: 1.94
Norfolk Seawolves - self rank: 1 - actual rank: 4.5
Portland Pythons - self rank: 6 - actual rank: 6.69
Tijuana Luchadores - self rank: 1 - actual rank: 3.31
So The George Washington Cannot Tell a Lie award for honesty goes to... The Dallas Birddogs, though once again Portland showed they don't need to boost their own ego by ranking themselves top.
The Homer Simpson award for lack of perspective goes to... The London Royals, who refuse to be told by the community that they're anything other than the best.
