[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Introduction[/div]
Its mock draft season and everyone is getting in on the act. With so many ideas and rumors floating around the league, everyone's mock looks a little different. Most, however, follow a similar format. In an attempt to shake up the same exercise everyone has been participating in, @furiousPanda and I decided to do a "Dueling Mock Draft." Panda made all the odd numbered selections, while I made all the even numbered ones. We then wrote up justifications for our respective picks and combined them into one mock draft. This mixed the draft up for both of us and forced each of us to adapt as we executed the different strategies we think each team might follow. There were several points at which one of us took the player another was planning on taking right before our next pick. There was a different type of challenge and thinking we had to apply to this exercise than a regular mock draft.
Draft ordered was determined based on how the season ended. We gave the New Orleans Second Line the last pick in each round because the Ultimus has not been played yet and they ended the season with a better record than the Yellowknife Wraiths.
It's also worth noting that if you're interested in this, Panda has already written a five round mock draft and I've written a three round one that also explores the ways team view draft stock.
With those factors/explanations in mind, Panda was on the clock with first overall pick belonging to the Austin Copperheads.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Round 1: [/div]
1. Austin Copperheads via Honolulu Hahalua
Pick: Colt Mendoza / iStegosauruz - Dallas Birddogs CB 200TPE
What's there to say? I know he is my co-author on this mock but a ton of mocks have him at number one. I even mocked him in my previous mock draft and nothing has changed. He is the new co-gm of the Dallas Birddogs, and future GM for another team. Austin will love his presence in their locker room and war room. Additionally, the Copperheads are thin in the corner back position. The player Colt Mendoza, will be an excellent addition to their roster and the future is bright for the team. Keep on simming and killing it iStegosauruz!
2. New Orleans Second Line via Sarasota Sailfish
Pick: Magnus Rikiya / Tesla - Norfolk Seawolves DT 216TPE
The top two picks have been discussed at length this draft season. With Mendoza off the board to Austin with the first pick, New Orleans follows a similar line of reasoning and secures a player that fits their locker room almost perfectly. With Bjorn Ironside (S18 830TPE) and Blake Faux (S16 734TPE) left unprotected in the expansion draft, New Orleans secures their defensive tackle of the future in Magnus Rikiya. There are a lot of signals coming out of New Orleans that they also have their eye on Tijuana Luchadores quarterback Ben Slothlisberger to be the successor to Stan Francisco (S14 1026TPE). I considered him in this slot because of those signals but settled on Rikiya because I feel like they can get Slothlisberger later in the draft.
3. Philadelphia Liberty
Pick: Derred de Ville / Exilizer - London Royals LB 229TPE
Derred de Ville is quickly rising through the ranks. He may not be the highest TPE linebacker but this is more of a user pick. Exilizer could easily become a future GM for another team, he is also very active on the forums and discord. Further, his graphics are on point so he will definitely earn more in the future. And lastly, he will help solidify the linebacker position for Philly and will help anchor that defense.
4. Arizona Outlaws
Pick: Johnny Hellzapoppin / Colabear - Myrtle Beach Buccaneers S 215TPE
Arizona can go a lot of ways this pick. They have only have two players in their secondary protected in the upcoming expansion draft - Jamie Nkiah (S20 358TPE) and Desmond Scarlett (S20 498TPE). Their other defensive backs are all up for grabs. With those factors in mind, Arizona takes the second highest TPE safety in the draft and a popular community member in Johnny Hellzapoppin. I debated having the Outlaws take a defensive tackle here in case they lose one of their two young defensive tackles - Reggie Culbertson (S20 284TPE) or Pete “Plop” Miller (S21 374TPE) - in the expansion draft but decided that there was enough defensive tackle talent in the draft they could wait.
5. San Jose Sabercats
Pick: Phat Boi / BadLck - Kansas City Coyotes DT 259TPE
San Jose could not resist taking Phat Boi here and they will snag him. He is one of the best prospects of this draft with one of the highest TPE of his class. But not only that, BadLck is a great locker room presence. From just observing his interactions, he is pretty entertaining and will help lift the locker room up. Sabercats need some defense line help and expect Phat Boi to be a day one starter.
6. Philadelphia Liberty via Chicago Butchers
Pick: Tyler Oles Jr. / To12143 - Portland Pythons CB 215TPE
This is a pick that has been gaining a lot of traction in the past week. The Liberty only have two cornerbacks currently on their roster - Emondov Emoji (S15 1069TPE) and Stuart Little IV (S18 238 TPE). Neither of those two players is protected in the upcoming expansion draft. With that mind and the need at linebacker addressed with their previous pick at third overall, the Liberty snag Tyler Oles Jr. A recreate who has significant experience in a variety of areas, Oles will be a valuable contributor for the Liberty.
7. Honolulu Hahalua via Austin Copperheads
Pick: Troen Egghands / Troen - Myrtle Beach Buccaneers DE 221TPE
For the new expansion Honolulu team, they'll look for someone to build around. They will look for not just a great player but a great user as well. So Honolulu will have to start the draft with a strong defense pick, and they select Troenn Egghands. Troen is a very active user on the forum and discord while being a max earner. Honolulu will be happy to build it's foundation from the best defensive end of the class.
8. Colorado Yeti
Pick: Thubba Bumper / baueranthony9 - Norfolk Seawolves CB 212TPE
The Yeti have a need at cornerback. They only have three on their roster - Louisiana Purchase (S18 831TPE), Quentin Sinclair (S15 674TPE), and Alex Hornbacher (S12 480TPE). Only Louisiana Purchase is protected in the upcoming expansion draft. Thubba Bumper fills an immediate need for the Yeti and is a pick that fits with their team, as his player name is an allusion to current Yeti defensive tackle Bubba Thumper (S17 1041TPE).
9. Baltimore Hawks
Pick: Stanislaw Koniecpolski / majesiu - Dallas Birddogs LB 246TPE
One of the Hawks needs is linebacker. It could grow to be a bigger need post expansion draft and they are excited that the best linebacker TPE wise, Stanisław Koniecpolski falls to them. If you looked up the definition of max earner, majesiu profile picture will be smack dab in the middle. He is a part of multiple sim leagues so you know that he will earn and be active. Stanisław Koniecpolski had a great year in the DSFL, with 140 tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception and 3 knockdowns. As his team mate, he is a great guy and fun to interact with. Baltimore will be lucky to have him on their roster.
10. Orange County Otters
Pick: Jeffrey Phillips / DrunkenTeddy - Dallas Birddogs TE 247TPE
The Orange County Otters have very few holes on their roster. Their current tight end - Johnny Blaze (S13 510TPE) is heading deeper into regression. DrunkenTeddy’s previous player was an Otter, so this seems like a logical pick for them. He’s the highest earning tight end in the class, plays a position they have a need at, and has history with the team.
11. Yellowknife Wraiths
Pick: Brandon Booker / Memento Mori - Myrtle Beach Buccaneers CB 218TPE
Defense is a huge need for the Wraiths, especially in the secondary and with a ton of talent on the board they go with Brandon Booker. A lot of the current mock drafts don't have him going in the first round but I think he gets picked here. He will help bolster the secondary and with a deep defensive class the Wraiths pick their man here. In addition to having a great player, the user Memento Mori is a max earner, contributor to the league and very active on discord.
12. New Orleans Second Line
Pick: Ben Slothlisberger / slothfacekilla - Tijuana Luchadores QB 203TPE
I discussed this pick a bit earlier. New Orleans seems to have their eye on Slothlisberger to be their quarterback of the future. They were able to wait until now to pick him because there aren’t very many quarterback needy teams this season. The only expansion team to pick in the first round - Honolulu - has a quarterback on the in Corvo Havran, so taking his successor in the first feels like a reach. New Orleans secures Slothlisberger here, however, because of someone - like Sarasota - potentially snagging him in the second.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Round 2:[/div]
1. Honolulu Hahalua
Pick: White Goodman / Gucci - Dallas Birddogs RB 246TPE
As far as needs, Honolulu needs everything and they go with the former Dallas Birddog GM. White Goodman, has great stats and is the best running back in this draft class. I'm not sure if picking running back this high will happen but Honolulu picks Goodman because of the user. Gucci, is a great leader, active user and a wonderful locker room guy. He will always be a max earner. Along with Troen, Raven and Dwyer they will help build a solid active culture for the Hahalua.
2. Sarasota Sailfish
Pick: Deshun Jones / Forty Jordy - Dallas Birddogs DT 212TPE
With their first pick in franchise history, the Sarasota Sailfish secure a high earning defensive tackle who will be a great locker room presence for their team. With experience in the Dallas Birddogs locker room and war room, Deshun Jones has seen first hand how an expansion team functions and what works and what doesn’t. That experience will be invaluable for the new team in Sarasota.
3. Arizona Outlaws via Philadelphia Liberty
Pick: Ocatavio Clemente / Billybolo53 - Myrtle Beach Buccaneers DT 216TPE
With a deep defensive class and a great corner back picked in the first round the Outlaws focus on the defensive line. They will select Octavio Clemente for Myrtle Beach, who is an imposing defensive tackle. I do not have a lot of interaction with Billybolo53 but from the feel of Myrtle Beach players, he is a strong teammate. And on top of that, his player is high in terms of TPE in a stacked class. The Outlaws will be ecstatic to have him on the line.
4. Arizona Outlaws
Pick: Patrik Money / PMoney - Kansas City Coyotes DE 196TPE
After securing their safety of the future in Hellzapoppin in round one, the Outlaws bolster their defensive line by taking Kansas City Coyotes defensive end Patrik Money. With only one defensive end - Joseph Henry (S14 175TPE) - currently on the roster, the Outlaws have an immediate need for a young, active presence on their defensive line. Money, who has seen his stock shooting up in a weak defensive end class by actively earning and displaying a strong knowledge of the league and its mechanisms, fits what the Outlaws are looking for.
5. San Jose Sabercats
Pick: Monterey "Monty" Jack / Rradum - Dallas Birddogs QB 229TPE
This might be a huge surprise, the Sabercats take a quarterback. Just kidding, they have to draft Monty Jack. This is one of our first GM picks of the draft. Jack, will be the face of SJS for a long time.Their current quarterback is facing regression so the timing is good. Rradum is a great user and his player will help lead San Jose to a championship in the future, no doubt.
6. Philadelphia Liberty via Chicago Butchers
Pick: Matt “Son of Havoc” Cross / J0EB - Norfolk Seawolves S 220TPE
The Liberty have had an astoundingly successful draft thus far, managing to secure one of the top linebackers and cornerbacks in the class. In the second round the highest TPE safety in the draft falls right into their lap. Its an opportunity they can’t pass up since they only have three safeties on their roster - Richard D’Attoria V (S15 1181TPE), Lamont McKinnie (S15 1000TPE), Lenox Garnett (S11 347TPE) - all who are either in regression or about to enter it. Cross fills an upcoming need for the Liberty and is an active player who will liven up their locker room while earning at an absurd pace.
7. Austin Copperheads
Pick: Big Edd / Big Edd - Dallas Birddogs DT 190TPE
Austin fills a huge need here and they select the Birddog superstar Big "Snacks" Edd. Snacks is another great earner and one of the best defensive tackles in the draft only behind Phat Boi and Clemente. This pick helps solidify their defense line and the big man will be their mainstay. While Big Edd is a strong player, the user is also impressive. Interacting with him in the locker room, he is entertaining and will bring out the best from the locker room. He will not hesitate to help his teammates. The trade request was just a ruse and not serious so NSFL GMs will take a chance on him.
8. Colorado Yeti
Pick: William Lim / yonggarius - Dallas Birddogs WR 216TPE
The Yeti stop the slide of the best receiver in the draft, William Lim, snagging him in the back half of the second round. The receiver class in this draft is deep and there are options in free agency, however after leaving Laszlo Forty-Two (S16 1154TPE) unprotected in the upcoming expansion draft the Yeti have a gaping hole at wide receiver. If Forty-Two is lost in the expansion draft as many expect he will be the only other receivers on the Yeti roster are James Bishop (S12 805TPE) and Red Arrow (S21 337TPE). Lim is an active community member who has been a productive force in the Birddogs locker room. He’ll pair with Red Arrow to solidify the Yeti’s receiving corps for the next few seasons.
9. Chicago Butchers via Baltimore Hawks
Pick: Bayley Benson Jr. / BayleyIsland - Dallas Birddogs LB 165TPE
Taylor Swift is going to Chicago! This is the second of three GM picks of the draft. Which, for the Chicago Butchers is a great choice, from interacting with Bayley in the Dallas locker room the franchise is in good hands. He is fun to talk to and will help bring that locker room back to life. The linebacker Bayley Benson Jr., maybe has been a late addition to the Birddog roster but had a monster year, and was sacking quarterbacks left and right. I have no doubt that the team will get back on its feet and start competing again.
10. Orange County Otters
Pick: Haha Mango-Panda / furiousPanda - Dallas Birddogs LB 207TPE
Linebacker is a position for the Orange County Otters that is growing weaker by the season. They currently list three on their roster - Lanzer Grievous (S15 1141TPE), Jaylen Storm (S16 531TPE), and David Ginsberg (S13 341) . Grievous is about to begin regression, Storm only has one more season until he hits it, and Ginsberg is descending further into it rapidly. Mango-Panda solidifies a position that will be a serious need in a season or two. Coming from the Dallas locker room, he’s an active player with a good attitude and great sense of humor that should fit well in the Otter’s team environment.
11. Yellowknife Wraiths
Pick: Colby Jack / flyeaglesfly29 - London Royals QB 245TPE
Our last GM pick of the draft, Colby Jack. This is another face of the franchise pick. Currently, they are competing for the Ultimus, so Colby Jack will help try to bring in more for seasons to come. Fly is a super user and max earner so no questions asked that this is a great pick. Not because they have to select him.
12. New Orleans Second Line
Pick: Eddie Jeeta / QuirkyTurtle - Kansas City Coyotes WR 195TPE
The second elite receiver is off the board now, as New Orleans bolsters their receiving corps by selecting Kansas City Coyotes wideout Eddit Jeeta. With only two receivers on their roster - Bona’beri Jones (S13 585TPE) and Jed Podolak (S19 568TPE) - the Second Line could use a strong presence on the outside to open up running lanes for their elite running game. Jeeta fits that need perfectly and would give New Orleans an offensive chess piece for the next few seasons.
Grader Note: Please split payment 50/50 between myself and @furiousPanda.
