@Troen wrote an excellent article a few weeks before last season's draft detailing each team's needs, which was very helpful for me and everyone else who created draft content. The first pieces of draft-related content are starting to trickle in, with a few people writing draft destination articles and Steg's article monitoring the progress of each DSFL draft pick at the mid-point of the season. Between now and the end of the season, people will retire, there'll be trades, and other stuff will happen that will make this less applicable, but it should hopefully serve as a useful resource throughout the lead-up to the draft.
Arizona Outlaws
Biggest Needs: DL, DB
Lesser Needs: RB
The Outlaws are largely set on the offensive side of the ball, with their oldest player being S17 wide receiver Saba Donut. Quarterback Jay Cue hands the ball off to a max earning S21 RB, throws to receivers and tight ends drafted between S20 and S22 (with the exception of the aforementioned Donut) and even has two young offensive tackles protecting him. Arizona sent a further two wide receivers down to the DSFL this season, so don't expect them to pick an offensive player early on. They could look to draft an RB2 to split carries with Baby Yoda though, as while they sent Jacoby Batista and Zed Keppler down to the DSFL this season, neither are earning TPE at a high rate.
Arizona's defensive players are even younger, with defensive tackle Shane Masters the only player drafted before S20. Defensive line is a position that could Arizona look to target early in the draft, as neither Masters nor defensive tackle Claude Miller II are high earners. They drafted Slinky Claxton in Round 6 of last season's draft but another young defensive lineman with the potential to displace Masters or Miller II wouldn't go amiss. They're set at linebacker with Galf Wilf and Stanis?aw Koniecpolski manning the two LB spots in nickel, but would benefit from adding another defensive back. Desmond Scarlett, Tyler Oles JR, Zamir Kehla and Quinn Hughes give Arizona four young, high-earning defensive backs but their fifth is Atlas Quin, who is active but not a high earner, with Oles JR, Kehla and Hughes already passing him in TPE despite being drafted a season later. In a class with lots of good safety prospects, I'd wager that Arizona drafts a safety with one of the three picks they own in the first two rounds.
Austin Copperheads
Biggest Needs: DL, DB
Lesser Needs: WR
Austin have a large group of S15 and S16 players on their roster who have begun to regress, or will do this offseason. Quarterback Easton Cole, running back Mako Mendonca, wide receiver Rod Tidwell, tight end Peter Larson, offensive lineman Edmond Beaver-Dantes, defensive end Grayson Kuusela, cornerback Dermot Lavelle Jr., safety Jack Rambo and kicker Alfredo Crisco will all regress, while running back Ryan Leaf Jr is retiring.
The weakest area of the Copperheads roster is their defensive line, where they only have three active players - Kyle Idlewyld, Troen Egghands and Grayson Kuusela. Kuusela was drafted back in S12, meaning they'll lose 50% of their TPE this offseason - which would see Kuusela auto-retired unless they can earn 57 TPE before regression occurs. With no defensive line send downs, this is a spot where one or even two S23 rookies could expect to start straight away.
Another priority for Austin will be drafting a defensive back, as Dermot Lavelle Jr. is entering regression and only Awkward Sexjoke and Gregor Macgregor look like long-term starters in the secondary. Safety Jack Rambo is entering a second offseason of regression and will fall below 500 TPE, while Takeda Okura's earning has significantly slowed over the last couple of seasons. Expect Austin to draft defensive line and defensive back help early, before beginning to prepare for life after the core of their team goes to live on a farm upstate.
Baltimore Hawks
Biggest Needs: DL, TE
Lesser Needs: DB, LB, OL
Baltimore lost starting quarterback Corvo Havran to the Honolulu Hahalua through expansion and find themselves in a rebuild as a result. Chika Fujiwara has the potential to grow into an effective NSFL quarterback, but his #1 target Errol Maddox is on the wrong side of regression. S21 Offensive Rookie of the Year Chris Kross looks set to step into Maddox's role, Asher Quinn is a solid starter and Nick Kaepercolin is earning well in the DSFL, but Fujiwara could do with a better tight end to supplement his wideouts. James Lewandowski looks to have a limited ceiling with his low rate of earning and tight end is a position Baltimore could reasonably expect to find an upgrade at. Baltimore drafted offensive lineman Byron Dolls in Round 3 of last year's draft, but another lineman to play at the other tackle position would be a nice addition.
On the other side of the ball, the Hawks only have two active defensive linemen. Of their two inactives, one is below 300 TPE and the other will join them below that mark after regression occurs this offseason so a defensive lineman is a big need for the Hawks. Huskies, one of their GMs, recreated as defensive end CJ Riley and he'll be their second round pick. While not a desperate need, they could also look to add another linebacker. S22 first round pick Derred de Ville looks a potential superstar, but his partner Guy Nikko has regressed to 338 TPE and will regress further this offseason. Baltimore also drafted Dex Kennedy as a future LB starter - Kennedy is spending another season in Minnesota in S22 - but Kennedy's not a particularly high earner and in a good S23 linebacker class they could upgrade there.
Finally, they could do with adding some players to their secondary. Walt Green is still above 1100 TPE but has entered regression and won't last forever. Their highest TPE corner, Quentin Sinclair, is a regressing inactive and Juan Marston rarely updates. Eldrick Avery and Ben Stackinpaper were excellent additions in the last draft but the Hawks still need more defensive backs.
Chicago Butchers
Biggest Needs: DB, WR
Lesser Needs: DL, OL
Chicago needs a lot of help. They're without their first round pick, having traded it to Colorado to acquire their GM's player, John Smirh, and have arguably the weakest roster in the NSFL. Quarterback Rose Jenkins has announced her retirement, but Chicago acquired their future quarterback George O'Donnell in a trade with Arizona. RB1 Farley Hank is inactive, but he'll still be at a decent TPE level after regression and rookie Julio Tirtawidjaja has shown promise behind him. Sean O'Leary is an excellent WR1, but their only other wide receiver is a 287 TPE inactive. They'll call up Raheem Okusi from Portland to fill one spot, but a high earning rookie receiver could find a starting job catching passes in Chicago. Tight end Von Hayes is only 229 TPE, but is a rookie who has recently become more active and taken on a league job so will hopefully pan out for them. An offensive lineman would also help this offense improve, but the Butchers have other more urgent needs.
Like every team I've listed so far, Chicago will be looking to draft a defensive linemen. John Smirh and Simeon Works are two young, promising players but Thorian Skarsgard is one of the oldest active players in the league, having been drafted in S12. Skarsgard only has a couple more seasons in him at most, and their fourth starter is inactive. Chicago will need to find Skarsgard's (eventual) replacement in this offseason or the next.
Chicago are in a good spot at linebacker, with Mike Hockhertz, Perry Tucker Jr. and Benson Bayley Jr. on the roster. They desperately need additions in the defensive backfield, though. Osiris Firestorm-Fjord and Hamish MacAndrew give Chicago a promising corner and safety, but their other DBs are regressing inactives. Chicago need at least two defensive backs, but would benefit from acquiring three.
Colorado Yeti
Biggest Needs: OL
Lesser Needs: DL, DB
Colorado have a strong roster, and would struggle to find a starting spot on the roster for most rookies. Quarterback Wolfie McDummy is the highest TPE quarterback in the league, and will continue to play at a high level for at least a few seasons after regression begins. RB1 and TE1 Ashley Owens and Earl Sauce are among the best at their positions, and they've three young players on offense in TE2 Gronk Robertowski and receivers Red Arrow and William Lim. The Yeti are well-stocked at the skill positions, as send down Leeroy Jenkins will be called up once he passes James Bishop or Jake Dropson in TPE.
The only position on offense where they could find a rookie starter is offensive lineman. Colorado doesn't have a human offensive lineman on the roster, and a high earning rookie could slot straight into the tackle position to guard McDummy.
Colorado boast a strong defense too, with the highlight on the defensive line being defensive tackle Bubba Thumper. Thumper is joined on the line by the Yeti's first round picks from the last two drafts, Immanuel Blackstone and Mo Magic. Their fourth DL is Ismael Sanchez, who is active but not a max earner. A rookie who will push Sanchez to earn more or take his job could make a strong line even stronger.
Colorado has one of the league's best LB tandems in Mo Berry and Tony Gabagool, and has Nat Wright playing a second season in Tijuana behind them. Wright isn't the highest earner, but Berry is the league's top linebacker and neither he nor Gabagool need to be replaced with any urgency. S21 second round pick Rotticus Scott has added to an already-good secondary, and their S22 R2 pick Thubba Bumper will be ready to join him in the cornerback group once he's needed. You can never have too many defensive backs and the Yeti will probably draft another, but they'll spend at least one season in the DSFL so it's not a position they need to address ASAP.
Honolulu Hahalua
Biggest Needs: DB, TE, LB
Lesser Needs: OL
Honolulu are set at the quarterback position - Corvo Havran will regress a third time this offseason but the Hahalua have Luke Skywalker and Jim Waters behind Havran to take over when the time is right. S22 2nd round pick Ke?oke?o K?ne-Maika?i will grow into a good NSFL RB1, and Ruff Ruff's 100 speed will make him a successful RB2 for as long as he's required. They look fine at receiver too, with Jed Podolak a good-but-not-great WR1 who still has plenty of time to develop. He has Jacoby Clay and William Alexander behind him, as well as Daymond Brooks in the DSFL. Adding a receiver won't be a priority. There's a glaring hole at tight end though, as Honolulu doesn't have one on the roster and none of their send downs at the position look ready to make the step up to the NSFL. The Hahalua are another team with no human offensive linemen, but with the holes they have on defense I don't imagine that OL will be a priority in the coming draft.
Honolulu have a relatively strong defensive line, the biggest names being Logan Noble Jr and S22 seventh overall pick Momona Keiki-K?ne. Jayson Kearse and Reggie Culbertson aren't high earners, but they're active and having been drafted in S19 and S20 respectively, they're a long way from regression and are serviceable players. They'll take their GM Dwyer's recreate, Bane Ka?an??an?, with their second round pick, but he might switch to whichever position Honolulu needs most. Where they need an injection of youth is the back seven. Mack Arianlacher is a former number one overall pick and a top ten linebacker by TPE, but the three players behind him are all regressing, and only Alex Selich is still updating. Selich was drafted all the way back in S11 and won't be of the required quality to be a starting LB in S23.
In the secondary, they've only three players - cornerbacks Emondov Emoji and Victor Moreno, and safety Joseph Wozniak. Only Emoji is active, and the two inactives are both below 350 TPE. They definitely need two defensive backs, and with Emoji regressing and the two inactives being lower TPE players they could really do with three or four.
New Orleans Second Line
Biggest Needs: WR
Lesser Needs: DL
Stan Francisco is, like Havran, another S14 quarterback but NOLA has Ben Slothlisberger ready to step in when Francisco hangs up his cleats. In Forrest Gump and Marcella Toriki, New Orleans has arguably the best 1-2 punch combo and so they don't need a running back either. The Second Line don't have much in the way of receiver talent though, as Bona'beri Jones is retiring and Ed Barker only has 404 TPE. They have Sean Snyder in the DSFL but he's been passed in TPE by some S23 players already and NOLA will need to add at least one receiver. NOLA throw to their running backs a lot and Austin McCormick and Rainier Wolfcastle are one of the league's better tight end pairs but going into S23 with just Ed Barker and Sean Snyder in the wide receiver corps isn't good enough. NOLA was one of the first NSFL teams to embrace the fair rubs movement, and with Givussafare Rubbe and Brave Ulysses on either side of the offensive line they're well stocked in that department.
Their defensive line could use some work, as Bjørn Ironside is retiring and Ben Tu'inukuafe is entering regression. Their other defensive linemen are S21 and S22 first round picks, Dorfus Jimbo Jr and Magnus Rikiya. They have Hank Steel in the DSFL to step into Ironside's spot, but they'll at want at least one draft pick, if not two. One to groom as Tu'inukuafe's replacement, and another to push Jimbo Jr and Steel for a starting spot.
NOLA looks good at linebacker, with the 1100+ TPE Quenton Bode and DRotY candidate Ugarth the Dissector. They also have Samuel L Sackson in the DSFL, who isn't a spectacular insurance policy but is certainly better than nothing. Their secondary is in a good spot too - only CB2 Deon Taylor is regressing and the other four defensive backs are all under contract for at least another season. GM IsaStarcrossed recreated as safety Adélie de Pengu and if he chooses to stay at the position I'd be very surprised to see NOLA draft a defensive back. They already have safety LiterallyJust A. Hexagon in the DSFL, giving them more than enough depth at the position. NOLA can address their few major needs and then draft players for the future.
Orange County Otters
Biggest Needs: DL
Lesser Needs: QB, RB, LB, OL
Quarterback Franklin Armstrong is entering his second period of regression, and Orange County don't have anyone lined up to replace him. Unless they can swing a trade for a young quarterback elsewhere, they should be looking to draft one in this draft to avoid experiencing some poor seasons while their young QB is developing - like Baltimore currently are. Running back Tatsu Nakamura was a great addition in last season's draft, but they'd benefit from drafting another back as Ludicolo Bigby is a regressing IA. Bigby will still be a serviceable RB2 in S23, but a back who'd spend a season in the DSFL before taking over from Bigby would be a good pickup. Orange County have top-end talent and depth at the other skill positions, with WR1 Hugh Mongo the league's top receiver by TPE. Future Trunks is an effective WR2 and is still young, while Garfield Despacito Jr. can be called up to join Mongo and Trunks in S23. The Otters love to throw the ball to their tight ends, and they have two good ones in Jammerson Irving and Jeffrey Phillips as well as Daniel George in the DSFL who they'll call up to replace Irving after he regresses further. Orange County could look to draft an offensive linemen to join Douglas Quail, who I expect to be called up in S23, but it probably won't be a priority for them.
Orange County have their S21 and S22 second round picks Rapid Eagle and Big Edd in the middle of the defensive line, but could upgrade either side of them as Bobby Boucher has updated once in the last month and Gary Lazer-Eyes hasn't updated since February - and both are below 400 TPE. If Lanzer Grievous doesn't re-sign with the team they'll need a new starting linebacker, but if he does then any LB drafted would spend one or more seasons in the DSFL. Orange County's roster is strong enough that they have the luxury of being able to pick a linebacker knowing this and have a quality starter behind Grievous for when he moves on. Finally, the Otters' secondary is the best in the league, and only cornerback AJ Lattimer will regress this offseason. They've no need to add a defensive back in this draft, and doing so would just be unfair to ASFC quarterbacks.
Philadelphia Liberty
Biggest Needs: DL, DB
Lesser Needs: WR
Brock Phoenix is one of the league's younger starting quarterbacks. Drafted in S19, he's still improving and with Suleiman Ramza behind him too it'd be very surprising to see Philadelphia draft a quarterback. The Liberty don't appear likely to draft a running back either, as the Torenson-Dotson tandem is one of the league's better RB duos and Torenson will still be above 1000 TPE after regression is applied this offseason. At tight end they have Avon Blocksdale Jr. starting and Donatello Arrabiata, the unofficial mayor of Flavor Town, in the DSFL. They don't need a lineman either, as Simon Tremblay will be called up from Myrtle Beach and as their GM's recreate, their second round pick will be spent on Kevin Malone. The only offensive position they might consider drafting with any urgency is wide receiver. Nacho Varga, Randy Vuxta and Flash Panda are a great trio of wideouts, but Varga's a S15 draftee and it'd be wise for Philly to start preparing for life post-Varga.
Defensive line is an area of weakness for Philadelphia. ILove Gimmy is locked in at one spot, and the sim seems to love rookie Tristan Gronlie despite his low TPE, but the other two spots are occupied by Ricardo Morris and Johnson Harding. Neither of them update, and neither of them are at the TPE level you'd want from an NSFL starter. S22 draftee Mario VonPebbles will be called up from the DSFL, but an S23 rookie would also be in a position to get defensive line snaps. Drafting a linebacker won't be a priority, as the oldest linebacker on the roster was drafted in S18 and all three are active. It's likely Philadelphia adds a defensive back, as safety Lamont McKinnie is retiring. Richard D'Attoria V only updates infrequently, but is at a high enough TPE level that he'll continue to be a good player for a few more seasons. It wouldn't be surprising to see Philly add another cornerback to push Jonathan Altidor either, as Altidor's been earning at a slower rate compared to the other defensive backs the Liberty drafted in S22.
Sarasota Sailfish
Biggest Needs: QB, RB, DL
Lesser Needs: DB
We'll start with the obvious one. Sarasota needs a quarterback. Free agent quarterback Zack Vega became the first player to sign with the Sailfish, and was inserted as their starting QB. Vega's never been a high earner, so Sarasota acquired Tom Sofa in a draft day trade to develop behind him. WALDO (Vega's user) has been away as he's had some IRL stuff to attend to, and Tom Sofa doesn't look like he'll develop into their future starter as he's posted twice on the site in the last 24 days. Quarterback Chris Ramos is also contracted to Sarasota, but he's reportedly switching positions and isn't a high TPE player either. Running back Dax Frost has had more carries than any other player in the league, and Sarasota would love to add a capable RB2 so that they don't have to hand the ball to the 197 TPE Paco McTaco 9-10 times each game.
The wide receiver situation is far more encouraging, as Sarasota has a good group in Rayne Gordon, Dexter Banks II and Michael Witheblock. Sarasota also has two active tight ends in the DSFL, and James Angler looks likely to be called up from Myrtle Beach to replace Johnny Blaze, with Clark Boyd presumably spending S23 in the DSFL. I wouldn't expect Sarasota to take an offensive lineman early in the draft, as they have Samuel Baktiahri on the roster and Joey McCabe spending a second season in the DSFL.
Sarasota's defensive line has performed well so far this season, but defensive end Mike Franchet is retiring and defensive tackle Freezer Riposte has been around since S12. Cuco Clemente will be called up to take the vacant spot, but a rookie who's earning at a decent rate will have more TPE than Riposte does in Week 1 and so they could upgrade there. Playing linebacker are two young players with good names and great potential - Haha Mango-Panda and Fawn Dilmiballs - so Sarasota don't need to select a linebacker in this draft. I'd expect the Sailfish to look to draft a defensive back though, as they've no active send downs in the DSFL and Lucas Knight is in regression. Beat (that's literally their name, they don't have a last name) isn't a high earner and adding a second defensive back to eventually take over his role would be a wise move if they're able to address the other weak spots on their roster.
San Jose Sabercats
Biggest Needs: DL, DB, WR
Lesser Needs: OL
The Sabercats look relatively set in the backfield, as GM recreate Monterey Jack will step in for the retiring Dan Wright at quarterback and send down running back Jamar Lackson should be called up from the DSFL. Their current running back tandem continually outperform their TPE - Quindarius Tyerucker has eclipsed 1000 rushing yards in each of the last two seasons and been efficient carrying the ball despite having just 278 TPE - so adding another rusher is unlikely to benefit them. "Monty" Jack will have two productive receivers to throw to in Action Jackson and Deondre Thomas-Fox, but there's no-one behind this pair and no active send down receivers, so San Jose should look to draft one. Tight end Leon McDavid is another good passing target and McDavid is young, having been drafted in S21, so the Sabercats won't be looking too closely at tight ends unless they have some 2TE sets planned for next season. San Jose has no offensive linemen on the roster or in the DSFL, so would benefit from drafting one - but may prioritise addressing their needs at WR and on defense first.
Defensive line could be an issue for San Jose, as their highest TPE defensive lineman Brayden Ennis is retiring at the end of the season. This will leave them with just two defensive linemen on the roster, and Chip Otle is a 298 TPE inactive. Finding players to accompany Otis Allen on the defensive line will be a priority, as while some of their linebackers have the physical traits to play defensive end, they need another body to join Allen in the middle of the line. GM ckroyal92 has recreated as a defensive end, Water Chestnut III, and will fill one of the vacant DL positions. In the secondary, picking HeHateMe PickSix with the 4th overall pick in S21 and Chester Sweets with the 5th overall pick in S22 has given them two good young corners, and in selecting Cadillac Harris they acquired a third. They need two more though, as starting safety Trey Staley is ckroyal's retiring player and their other two DBs are inactives with less TPE than a rookie could reach by Week 1.
Yellowknife Wraiths
Biggest Needs: DB, TE
Lesser Needs: OL
GM flyeaglesfly recreated as the other Jack brother, Colby Jack, and he'll take over the QB position when veteran Cooter Bigsby retires. Yellowknife has a good collection of backs with S20 Offensive Player of the Year Mathias Hanyadi, S21 DSFL Offensive Player of the Year Acura Skyline and Orien Drake, who also exists. WR1 Nate Swift is deep into regression, but he'll still be effective if he chooses to continue playing in S23. WR2 Bender B. Rodriguez is ready to step into a bigger role, and has Willie B. Hardagain behind him in addition to two promising send downs, Mike Lee and Susan Cash Jr. They don't have a tight end on the roster, and I believe they currently play RBs there. They have tight end Zee Rechs in the DSFL and could call him up, but he's only 180 TPE. With so few offensive needs, I'd expect them to add a tight end. They have the league's top offensive lineman by TPE, Laszlo Forty-Two, playing left tackle and could make their offense even more potent by adding another human OL to the other side of the line.
The Wraiths are one of the few teams who won't be looking for a defensive line starter, as they've four actives who earn well in Nero Alexander, Giannis Kroustis, James Cho and Patrik Money. Alexander and Kroustis are S15 players who've begun regression and Yellowknife would love to grab a rookie to develop behind them, but with so many DL-needy teams they're unlikely to find value at the position in the draft. Yellowknife have an excellent LB duo in Maurice Virtanen and Douglas Quaid, so don't expect them to add players there with an early pick. Three members of their secondary - cornerback Johnny Snuggles and safeties Chase Jensen and Danny Grithead - are regressing and getting younger in the defensive backfield will be a priority for the Wraiths if they want to maintain one of the league's strongest rosters.
