Dear General Managers, Scouting Teams, Coaches and other Front Office staff of the National Simulation Football League,
My name is Raphael d’Alcott and I am a Wide Receiver turned Safety playing for the Dallas Birddogs. With the draft coming up soon I thought I would write you all this letter to tell you a little more about me. This may be the only chance I get before the draft so here goes.
I was born as the youngest child of the d’Alcott family in Corpus Christi, Texas. We are a family of farmers who have worked this soil for more than 100 years. My earliest memories involve me working with my siblings and parents on the farm and being involved with the community of my hometown. From those early days, the value of effort, hard work and community were etched into my very being, they would be tenants that I would take forward with me no matter where I went. Football is a sport that connects all three of those tenants together. Without one, the other two cannot function. I guess that’s what drew me to it in the first place, because I’ve always liked working with others to make bigger things happen.
I was involved with football from my earliest school days and finally got my big break in high school, where I was my quarterback's preferred target at wide receiver. I became an nationally ranked football player, a 5 star prospect and the sky was the limit for me. After a lengthy recruitment process, I accepted a scholarship to Ohio State.
I remember the first time that I ran out of the tunnel at Ohio Stadium. Hearing 100,000 people cheering me on was an incredible feeling. I had busted my butt in the month before the season began and the coaching staff put me in as a true freshman. I would be one of four true freshmen on that Ohio State team, including a man who I would come to know as my best friend. All star Safety Greedy Sly.
Now I am sure that you know everything about Greedy, drafted 1st overall in the DSFL and predicted to go high in this upcoming draft, but I wanted to tell you about the man I knew at Ohio State. Like me, Greedy has a natural athleticism that allows him to pick up the game really quickly. He’s a nightmare for receivers to deal with and would seemingly come up with big plays whenever we needed them. A sort of friendly rivalry started between us, seeing which one of us could make the more spectacular catch and who could rally the team to victory more. As our freshman season progressed, that rivalry turned into a friendship. We lived in the same dorm at Ohio State and we started pushing each other in everything. He’s one of the nicest guys I ever met and he’s a real asset to any team he’s on. I wonder if he remembers our two best moments together?
The first was the opening day of our Sophomore season. We had both taken Freshman All-American honours and the announcer made a point to highlight us as we ran out of the tunnel. The other was our win in the Rose Bowl over Texas. It was such a tightly contested game in one of the finest arenas ever built. Greedy had kept us in the game with a couple of good pass deflections late in the fourth but we were done to our 10 yard line and needed a touchdown to score. That’s when it happened. The run that changed my life forever. Our quarterback Lawson threw me the ball, I spun out a defender and just put my head up and ran. I ran as hard as I could and the world went silent. I couldn’t hear anything but the blood pumping in my ears. As I crossed the pylon into the endzone, it dawned on me what I had just done. I had won the Rose Bowl. Greedy beat out all the other guys to hug me after I stopped. It was the greatest moment of my life. I could really make it in football. I wish Greedy the best of luck with his career, he’s a great guy and he earned his success the hard way like me.
I got picked up in the middle rounds of the draft by the recent expansion team, the Dallas Birddogs. I was rather ecstatic to be picked up by them, since I could come back home to Texas, see my family and play in front of my home state. That was when they dropped the bombshell on me. They wanted me to move to the defensive side of the ball, to safety. I had never played on the defensive side of the ball in my life but considering how the team wanted to use me, I decided that I would give it a shot. I had watched Sly do it for all four years in Ohio State and the skillset was similar to the Wide Receiver skills I already had. That turned into a season that I wouldn’t have dreamt of even in my wildest dreams.
Dallas would go on to build a defence that would terrorize the league. An amazing feat for a recent expansion franchise I adjusted quickly to the Safety role but I would also be used as a Cornerback from time to time. I think the moment when it all clicked for me was week 6 against the Royals (The team that Greedy was drafted to, how about that?)
We had come off the worst game of the season against Tijuana and I had stood in front of a field of reporters and loyal fans to say that it would never happen again like that. That we would work harder than any other team to try and make things right. London’s Receiving core is excellent and was averaging 24.2 points a game at the time. Everything just came together in that game as I covered that amazing core, stopping nearly every pass that came my way. I performed in the clutch moments and Dallas would win the game. As we celebrated in front of the dog pound, Greedy came over to congratulate us and said to me:
“You look like a Safety now, Raph.”
That meant more to me than he probably realized.
Even though our season ended in disappointment (7-7 and no playoffs) we took leaps and bounds as a team and look to be a top contender in our division next year. It’s an exciting time for me and the birddogs.
I hope that I have shown you the real me in this letter. A man, born and raised in Texas that is team first and hungry. If you were to draft, no matter where you did it, I would give you every drop of sweat and blood in my body, I would give you my heart and my soul to turn the team into consistent champions. Not just because I want to win but because that is who I am. I’m a football player who somehow made it this far and wants to go even further.
Thank you for your time and Good Bless
