S23 DSFL Draft Prospects: Juan Domine
Position: ILB/OLB
6'2", 250 lbs
College: Houston
Strengths: Three-down player, did not miss many snaps during his junior and senior seasons ... versatile linebacker who can excel in the right scheme ... good football intelligence and play recognition, takes good angles towards running backs ... solid footwork and fundamentals, one of the least penalized linebackers in the NCAA last year ... was the natural leader of the Houston defense.
Weaknesses: Height and size ... college program lists him as 6'2", 250, but this fails the eye test ... played inside during college, but may not have the build to transition to the same role professionally ... needs to improve his ability to get off the block to prevent ball carriers from breaking through to the secondary ... limited in pass rush ... will need right role players around him to reach his full potential.
Summary: This is a player that will be a fan favorite despite his performance on the field. He will show up, put in his shift, say the right things, and will be respected by his coaches and his teammates. He'll likely fight for a roster spot on special teams where he'll get his chance to shine. Still, that's all true for dozens of guys around the league, and only a few of them differentiate themselves each year. There are lots of questions around where this player lands in the DSFL. Needs to show that he has the size to defend the run or the speed to cover receivers out of the backfield in the modern passing game. If he can't offer either, he won't get a second contract.
Player Comparison: Jerrell Freeman. Both products of the Texas high school football pipeline, and Freeman struggled to latch onto an NFL team, first spending in the CFL. Despite his small frame, Freeman established himself as a stout tackler during his brief career.
