With 10 weeks in the books, it is time to start thinking about who is standing out in the DSFL. These are the statistical leaders at each position group. Each player below stands out in one or more statistical categories and has earned a look by the awards committee for nomination.
If you feel I have missed anyone, feel free to comment below. I will happily do a followup article next week
Defensive Back of the Year
LiterallyJust A. Hexagon @JPach - 73 TCK / 4 INT / 4 PD / 1 TD
Bayden Brosley @sensual-snickers-bar - 37 TCK / 1 FF / 4 INT / 11 PD
Brendan Lanier @jdourtled - 43 TCK / 1 TFL / 1 INT / 13 PD
Buck Thornton @FurFurFurson - 46 TCK / 2 TFL / 1 FF / 5 SCK / 3 INT / 4 PD / 2 TD
Colt Mendoza @iStegosauruz - 82 TCK / 1 TFL / 1 FF / 2 SCK / 3 PD / 1 SAF
Eugene Smoothie @Nhamlet - 52 TCK / 5 SCK / 1 INT / 2 PD
Shawn Dawkins @Number 82 - 64 TCK / 3 FF, 1 FR / 1 SCK / 1 INT / 2 PD
The S22 class dominates these nominees. Only Eugene Smoothie is from the S23 class. The defending DBOY, Buck Thornton, is putting on another strong performance, amassing 5 sacks, 3 interceptions, and 2 defensive touchdowns. LiterallyJust A. Hexagon is again hoarding tackles like he did last season, and this season has added 4 interceptions and a touchdown. Colt Mendoza leads all defensive backs with 82 tackles and is the only one to notch a safety.
Frontrunners: LiterallyJust A. Hexagon, Buck Thornton, Colt Mendoza
Linebacker of the Year
Blade McCoy @Blaster - 108 TCK / 2 TFL / 3 FF / 1 SCK
Dex Kennedy @Dagumpa - 89 TCK / 4 TFL / 1 FF / 8 SCK
Hingle McCringleberry @Jmac NCheese - 44 TCK / 15 TFL / 2 FF, 1 FR / 3 SCK / 11 PD
Eric Richards @WildfireMicro - 87 TCK / 4 FF, 1 FR / 1 SCK / 1 INT / 4 PD
Cadillac Mitchell @otto74 - 107 TCK / 1 TFL / 1 FR / 2 SCK / 1 INT / 3 PD
Samuel L. Sackson, Sr. @Ortecam - 45 TCK / 7 TFL / 4 SCK / 1 INT / 11 PD
Ryan Scott @MasterCashier - 97 TCK / 8 TFL / 6 SCK / 2 INT / 6 PD / 1 TD
Jack Banks @TheRocheLimit - 77 TCK / 5 TFL / 2 FF, 1 FR / 7 SCK / 1 INT / 6 PD / 1 TD
This race is extremely tight. Blade McCoy leads the league in tackles, while Hingle McCringleberry only has 44 tackles, but has tallied an enormous amount of tackles-for-loss and has more passes defended than most defensive backs. Dex Kennedy leads the league in sacks, and teammates Ryan Scott and Jack Banks have put together solid seasons across the board while also adding touchdowns.
Frontrunners: Hingle McCringleberry, Ryan Scott, Dex Kennedy
Defensive Lineman of the Year
Water Chestnut III @ckroyal92 - 38 TCK / 17 TFL / 6 SCK
CJ Riley @Huskies311 - 35 TCK / 17 TFL / 2 SCK
Son Goku @Naosu - 65 TCK / 11 TFL / 1 FF, 1 FR / 6 SCK
Jim Namen, Jr. @Trickiefella1 - 28 TCK / 14 TFL / 2 FF, 1 FR / 3 SCK
Mordecai Morrisey @MCP_ - 28 TCK / 11 TFL / 1 FF, 2 FR / 2 SCK
Mario VonPebbles @Jangorhino - 25 TCK / 7 TFL / 3 SCK / 1 SAF
Carl Wheezer @LGMForever - 28 TCK / 11 TFL / 1 SCK / 1 BLK
Tycker Om @Mysa - 22 TCK / 10 TFL / 1 FF / 2 SCK / 1 BLK
Defensive Ends will dominate this award as they seem to always do. Son Goku is having a monstrous year and is the clear frontrunner to win. Water Chestnut III is always in the backfield causing disruption, as is Jim Namen, Jr., who has forced more fumbles than the rest of the group. However, Chestnut and Namen will need a lot more statistical output in order to catch Goku.
Frontrunners: Son Goku, Water Chestnut III, Jim Namen, Jr.
Defensive Rookie of the Year
LB - Hingle McCringleberry - 44 TCK / 15 TFL / 2 FF, 1 FR / 3 SCK / 11 PD
DE - Son Goku - 65 TCK / 11 TFL / 1 FF, 1 FR / 6 SCK
DE - Water Chestnut III - 38 TCK / 17 TFL / 6 SCK
LB - Blade McCoy - 108 TCK / 2 TFL / 3 FF / 1 SCK
DE - CJ Riley - 35 TCK / 17 TFL / 2 SCK
S - Eugene Smoothie - 52 TCK / 5 SCK / 1 INT / 2 PD
With the incredibly deep class of S22 defensive backs, it makes sense that most, if not all, of the nominees for DROY will be linemen and linebackers. Son Goku and Hingle McCringleberry are the only S23 rookies I have listed as frontrunners for DPOY, so they, in my mind, are the frontrunners for this award. Goku is probably the favorite, but don’t count out McCringleberry, especially if he performs down the stretch.
Frontrunners: Son Goku, Hingle McCringleberry
Frontrunners for Defensive Player of the Year
S - LiterallyJust A. Hexagon - 73 TCK / 4 INT / 4 PD / 1 TD
S - Buck Thornton - 46 TCK / 2 TFL / 1 FF / 5 SCK / 3 INT / 4 PD / 2 TD
LB - Hingle McCringleberry - 44 TCK / 15 TFL / 2 FF, 1 FR / 3 SCK / 11 PD
LB - Ryan Scott - 97 TCK / 8 TFL / 6 SCK / 2 INT / 6 PD / 1 TD
DE - Son Goku - 65 TCK / 11 TFL / 1 FF, 1 FR / 6 SCK
I don’t envy the awards committee this year (and probably wouldn’t most other years). Defensive Player of the Year will come down to what the committee values most. These last four games will allow any one of these five to separate themselves from the group as the biggest baddest defender in the DSFL.
