We had an incredibly tight turnaround and had about ten to twelve hours of discussion over a two day period. There's eleven days between the last regular season game and the end of awards voting. Obviously you need to leave time for voters to vote, but compressing all the discussion into a two day period seems really unwise - and contributes to one of the problems you brought up later. This particular award was discussed after about five hours of discussions and many of the team reps had checked out at that point.I feel like this is an inevitability of organising things in the way they were. We've also got people from across the world in very different timezones, and organising all or most of the work into a two day period is going to lead to some people not being able to contribute as much as they'd like before you even bring in the discussion fatigue. But like I said at the beginning of the article, the nominations matter regardless. I have my defensive back of the year nomination in my sig. Frost was happy to see himself nominated for OROY even though he thought he had no chance of winning. Wayne Howyanow was excited to see himself nominated for LBotY and DPotY. That's just players off the top of my head that I'm in a locker room with. Ugarth's user is in this thread defending his nomination. The nomination is its own positive thing, not just an opportunity to win. (06-05-2020, 03:46 AM)mithrandir Wrote:4. The linebacker positional award by itself was discussed for 90 minutes. Linebacker is an incredibly difficult position group to evaluate given their extreme versatility. In the end, Edmonds was the last person booted from the list, essentially the sixth place nominee. One could argue he deserved a nomination, but no one was beating Mo Berry for that award. One thing I forgot to mention in the original post was that all five nominees played SLB rather than MLB. Edmond had literally the best tackling season ever at MLB - it can be taken as a message that you've almost zero chance of being nominated for an award if you play MLB. I don't think the fact he was the last person booted from the list stops it being a mistake. (06-05-2020, 03:46 AM)mithrandir Wrote:5. You and I have the exact same thought process on safeties. The inconsistency in leaving Edmonds off but including Sexjoke bothered me immensely. We messed this one up. I didn't think Awkward Sexjoke deserved a nomination over Hellzapoppin especially, and Vegeta and Hughes were also among the final cuts at the position.Good to know - on a similar note, 4 of the 10 nominees for cornerback/safety of the year played NB. Clearly Kroustis and Virtanen didn't belong on that list as they were just as good last year. Obviously the voters agreed.Pete Miller maybe? Not a great one but it's better. 44 tackles, 1 TFL, 9 sacks to 40 tackles, 3 TFLs, 12 sacks. AJ Lattimer could work too. 53 tackles, 2 interceptions, 16 passes defended to 48 tackles, 5 interceptions, 24 passes defended. Rapid Eagle is another player who could've been on the ballot instead of one of those two. He went from 24 tackles and 5 sacks to 38 tackles, 3 TFLs, 1 FF, 1 FR, 5 sacks, a safety and a blocked punt. ILove Gimmy could work too, I'd take Lattimer or Rapid but Gimmy improved from 36 tackles, 13 TFLs, 3 sacks to 40 tackles, 14 TFLs, a FR and 7 sacks. That's just from a few minutes looking at the index. There are definitely others worth talking about too in place of Kroustis and Virtanen. (06-05-2020, 03:46 AM)mithrandir Wrote:7. Leaking information about the awards ballot ahead of time is a serious offense and should result in a ban from ever serving on the committee again.I'd probably agree. But have the leakers been banned, or will they continue serving on the committee next season? (06-05-2020, 03:46 AM)mithrandir Wrote:8. I didn't sense in-fighting on the committee. There were some passionate discussions as might be expected when two highly invested committee members disagree. I never saw any insulting or disrespectful conversations in the committee discussion. There is no place for that. There's the screenshot of someone (and from the context it looks entirely sincere) calling someone else a cunt, for example. Won't single them out. I agree man. I posted this on the All Star thread but it seems a lot of nominations, especially on defence, are done by sorting by sacks, PDs, and INTs.
Since when did we start devaluing tackles at LB? I think the leading nominee at LB had ~100 tackles while there was Edmond and Hockhertz accumulating over 30 more tackles not even getting a top 5 nomination. Why do Howyanow’s 16 PDs (only 11 more than Hockhertz) become more valuable than 50 extra tackles?

I don’t know what happened with the team this season (I wasn’t on it, but more on that later), but the season before, there were about 5 of us that contributed in any meaningful way. After the season the entire team got lit up over it (and rightfully so, I should add). Then, over the course of the offseason, everyone on the team was told that if they didn’t want to participate, they could leave willingly and have a member of their team replace them. The five or so of us that actually built the nomination list for the prior season were told (publicly by name) that we did good work and were welcomed to remain in the team. Cut to about a week later, I’m informed by my GM, at the time, that I had been removed from the team. No DM, no Discord message, just see ya. I could care less now, but at the time I was pretty upset and had several choice words I won’t repeat here about the management of the committee. Like I said, I don’t know if the committee this season faced any such issues, but based on my short involvement with it, it needs way more (or perhaps better) oversight. And just to be on record, I argued hard FOR an awards committee, so I’m not biased against the idea. Just how we seem to have rolled it out, I guess.
