It’s time for my favorite part of the off season. The Prospect Bowl is where the rookie class of S24 get their first taste of the action and excitement that they can expect to find during their time in the league. We have a decent sized class this go around. 60 prospects by my count, containing a healthy mix of recreates and new users. This year the format was a 3 team round robin with each team playing the others twice. So without further ado let’s take a look at how these games panned out.
Game 1 Iowa Corn VS Chihuahua Chihuahuas
Things got off to an electrifying start when Chihuahuas safety Maverick Bowie broke off an 83 yard kickoff return. Mai Fukushu capitalized on Bowie’s heroics to score the first points of the game. After a bot interception Corn DT LeBong Simwell and SS Grummy Bear rallied with back to back interceptions. QB Charlemagne Cortez found his WRs for a pair of touchdowns putting the score at 3-21. Things looked hopeless for the Iowa Corn until RB Captain Rodgers scored a 90 yard touchdown run. Unfortunately his team was never able to find their footing. Turnovers and missed field goals were the order of the day. Meanwhile the Chihuahuas dominated the field leaving the final score 10-37
Game 2 Chihuahua Chihuahuas VS Hampton Waterdogs
Things moved a bit slower in this game. The Hampton Waterdogs drew first blood with a touchdown. The Chihuahuas responded with a field goal on their opening drive. This was a defensive struggle for the most part. On the one hand you could tell that the Waterdogs put an emphasis on red zone defense during practice as they locked down the Chihuahuas for most of the game holding them to field goals until the fourth quarter when they gave up a four yard rushing touchdown to Mai Fukushu. On the other hand the Chihuahuas defense kept the offense pinned down for most of the game, almost scoring a couple of safeties and giving their punt returners excellent field position. Unfortunately they couldn’t keep the Waterdogs pinned forever. RB Crowbar Theeks would score the game winning touchdown for the Waterdogs. Final score 12-17
Game 3 Hampton Waterdogs VS Iowa Corn
My heart goes out to Iowa on this one. The team played with a lot of heart. QB Joseph Jostar tried to put this team on his back and carry them to the win completing 14/20 passes for 177 yards. Unfortunately he also had an ill timed interception courtesy of LB Adam Schell that gave the Waterdogs the momentum they needed to secure their victory as WR Tre’Darius J’Vathon caught a pair of touchdowns from both of his quarterbacks Sam Howitzer and Jason Polinger. Final Score 21-10
Game 4 Chihuahua Chihuahuas VS Iowa Corn
The first of our rematch games threatened to look a lot like the first time these two teams faced each other. Chihuahuas RB Myles Smith started things off with a bang with a 70 yard touchdown run. Things were starting to look desperate for Iowa but the defense stepped up making play after play to keep their team alive. Most notably LB Busch Light had a critical interception, and DE Sebastian Low tackled RB Timothy Martins III for the safety. However the Corn offense struggled the entire game. Their kicker missed several key field goals and the trio of quarterbacks got torn apart by the defense with 3 interceptions and 9 sacks between them. The Chihuahuas seized the opportunity to run up the score and swept Iowa 24-16.
Game 5 Hampton Waterdogs VS Chihuahua Chihuahuas
If you're a fan of old school, gritty, win it in the trenches, football then this is the game for you. There were 78 rushing attempts total for a combined total of 540 rushing yards. Timothy Martins III redeemed himself with an 11 yard touchdown run in the first quarter. It was a close game that remained competitive up until the final minutes. A safety by Chihuahuas DT Lee Out and 46 yard Mai Fukushu touchdown run gave the Chihuahuas a slim 6 point lead going into the 4th quarter. The Waterdogs had several chances to take the lead back but Chihuahuas LB Brach Thomaslacher’s morale breaking interception spelled victory for the visiting Chihuahuas. Final score 30-17
Game 6 Iowa Corn VS Hampton Waterdogs
Final game of the prospect Bowl. Both teams fighting for pride and for the attention of the watching scouts. Iowa still looking for their first win had an added sense of urgency going into this game. This was a low scoring game plain and simple. Crowbar Theeks had the game’s lone touchdown, a 52 yard doozy. So to close out I want to draw attention to a few players I haven’t mentioned yet. First Iowa Corn WR Joshua Campbell. He was Iowa’s top target and it’s easy to see why. He fought for every yard and would often need several DBs to bring him down. On defense Hampton Waterdogs DT Michael Cera gets the nod. He was a key part of the Waterdogs defense throughout the entire prospect bowl. His singular sack this game seemed to destroy any confidence that the Iowa offense had. Final score 6-13
