From the day he declared himself eligible for the DSFL Draft to the day of the draft, Harrison Andrews experienced a bit of a roller coaster ride of interest from league GMs. There were days where he would spend most of the day fielding calls from multiple league GMs discussing a multitude of topics ranging from football to milk to Pokemon. Then there were the days of silence. Had he said something off-putting? Maybe it did matter that he preferred strawberry milk over chocolate milk. These were the days the left him questioning where he stood among the prospects in the S23 DSFL Draft.
As the days passed by, the top ranked prospects became more apparent as the top 10 or so prospects began to stand out from the rest. There was one thing they had in common. They were not on offense. Harrison had certainly noticed this but was not exactly sure how much it would impact him. The tight end class in this draft did not seem very deep and there were no other tight ends that he thought were clearly a more complete player than himself. One question lingered in his head though. Would he be interested in moving over to the defensive side of the ball? He had played on both sides in the past, but would it translate to the next level?
Draft day had finally arrived, and Harrison’s list of preferred destinations was very small. There was one team he knew he wanted to be a part of, the London Royals. They had the draft capital to make it happen, but did they share that same level of interest? The draft began and the picks started rolling in. Apart from a couple of specialists, it was all defense early on with the standouts coming off the board quickly. Late in the second round, a run on offensive players started with four being picked between picks 15 and 21. Was this it? Would he hear his name called soon?
London was on the clock with the 23rd pick, and they would not pick again until the 36th pick. Harrison’s phone began to ring, and he quickly answered. “How would you like to be part of the London Royals?” He could not believe it. He was being picked by his favorite team. A sense of relief washed over him. He was ready to get started immediately.
Following the draft, Harrison had a few conversations with the GMs of his new team. The Royals were just as thrilled to have him on the team as he was to be there. Harrison made it clear from the beginning that he was willing to play where the team needed him most. The Royals felt that Harrison’s combination or size, strength, and speed would translate well to the defensive line, but they needed to see it in person first. Upon arrival in London, Harrison went straight to the practice facility to begin working on drills. His skills were very raw, but it was easy to see his potential. Harrison met with the GMs again following his performance. They were ready to make his move to DE official, but it was ultimately up to Harrison. He accepted the proposal without hesitation. He was ready to tackle this new challenge head on.
