Hi. If you don't know me because I am in SHL 99% of the time. I am Luketd, aka Luke. I am a member of the SHL, a historian, and a nerd about data and statistics. I first started this out trying to compare the SHL to the VHL(another Sim Hockey League), but if you don't know there is another “sim universe” out there that is not money based. So there are other leagues that you gain TPE by writing, and stuff like that, and they don't have Activity Checks.. Which is the main thing to judge activity off of, as well as Updates. So since I can get Activity Check Levels, I decided to judge the 3 main leagues of it, SHL, PBE, and NSFL. This will in turn track activity since the start of NSFL and PBE, and will track activity of the SHL from 2015-Present. If you do not know, the SHL started in 2010 but did not implement Activity Checks until mid 2015, so that is the data we have from that. So from that I was able to scrape the Activity Check Threads from each League using R, and then exported that into a csv file. In google sheets I got the dates(start of the AC), so I could get the date of each week of the actual Activity Check.
So without further ado, here are some interesting things I found.
Highest Replies to an Activity Check in each League
SHL
Activity Check #316: 356 (05/18/2020)
Activity Check #317: 348 (05/25/2020)
Activity Check #315: 346 (05/11/2020)
Activity Check #318: 339 (06/01/2020)
Activity Check #321: 332 (06/22/2020)
As you can tell, the SHL is having the best activity it has seen probably in its history, with their top 5 peaks coming in the past 2 months. It helps with a strong reddit draft from r/hockey, and recreates coming back with the switch to FHM.
PBE
Activity Check #137: 268 (06/08/2020)
Activity Check #129: 266 (04/13/2020)
Activity Check #136: 261 (06/01/2020)
Activity Check #139: 256 (06/22/2020)
Activity Check #127: 256 (03/30/2020)
For PBE, the activity level isnt there like other sim leagues like the NSFL and SHL, but sadly the major subreddits for baseball quote “yeah the baseball subs are fucking cocksuckers”
More formally the subreddit doesn't like fun, so the growth is not as influenced by major influxes. But… PBE is also seeing their most activity in the 2020’s, with their peak activity coming in the past 4 months.
NSFL
Activity Check #144: 359 (02/17/2020)
Activity Check #160: 322 (06/08/2020)
Activity Check #161: 318 (06/15/2020)
Activity Check #154: 314 (04/27/2020)
Activity Check #153: 311 (04/20/2020)
Finally comes the NSFL, where they have also shown some great growth this year. The main source of this came from getting permission to post on r/NFL, where you see the peak of 359 comes from. After that it falls back down into the high 200’s and then different recruitment allows activity to come back up. I'm not sure how much they are allowed to recruit on different subreddits and whatnot, but I can see NSFL becoming the largest of the 3 because they are the most populated fanbase of the 3 IRL. Which is a good thing, PBE, SHL, and NSFL are like 3 peas in a pod, sharing users, likeness, and are very similar in their concepts.
Next comes is the graphs I have to display this,
So this graph shows the replies to each activity check recorded. The X marks where the SHL partnered with the PBE and NSFL. Its pretty cool to look at the growth of all 3 leagues from what they started. PBE and NSFL both grew at almost the same rate, until when NSFL did r/NFL and ballooned higher than PBE. But those 2 leagues are operating at the same rate, catching up to the SHL in activity. For the SHL, they have a much longer timeline in the graph.
For a shorter graph of this, I shortened the graph to just include since the time NSFL came into existence.
To get a more focused group of Activity Check Statistics if anyone wants to view.
This image shows the Difference between 1 activity check - last activity check, to see the growth of that. So for example AC#2 has 20 replies, and AC#1 has 10 replies, then it will be a +10 for that week. The only thing I can get from this is that after big draft classes, there will be drop in activity, from members not deciding to continue from their big draft classes.
This final image is just the top difference between all 3 leagues. Most of it comes from the SHL, and then the other 2 comes from the NSFL.
And then if I was going to do a top 10 activity from all 3 leagues, it would be the 1 NSFL at the top, and then 9 SHL’s.
If anyone wants I have a sheet that delves into each league a bit more in graphs and differences… Stuff like that
