I'm brand new, a rookie running back prospect, and I've already had my "This is Really Happening" moment. Maybe the grizzled vets will look at this and think I'm a know nothing kid with an overwhelming amount of optimism who's proved nothing and done less, and they're not wrong. I made the decision to try my hand at the league and get into the DSFL yesterday, and I've been contacted by a scout. To be honest I don't think I was ready with how quick this can move, waking up with messages wanting to talk to me was strange, but I jumped at the opportunity to talk with him.
The scout asked the questions you would expect. Do I have a team in mind? What are my goals? The whole time I could tell he was trying to gauge, if I was committed if I really possessed the constitution and work ethic to make it in the league. I did my best to answer his questions candidly. The last thing I would like to do is misrepresent myself.
When he asked me what my goals were, I didn't want to give him a cookie cutter response. Unfortunately cookie cutter may be accurate here. What are my goals? I want to be the best. I don't understand why anyone would shoot for anything less. I want the opportunity to play, I want to be on the field. I only want the option to be put in a position for success. Success for me would be leading a team to multiple championships, and I would like to re-write the record books while I do it. Is that what he was looking for? I have no idea, but it is how I feel.
Another question was, "How are you enjoying the league?" Well that one was easy, twenty four hours in, I'm already being scouted. If that doesn't make you feel like a part of something bigger from the get go, I don't know what will. I have still only talked to one team, but it has been one day and one is a lot more than I had anticipated, at least this soon. In short now I'm really excited this is real, this is happening.
The hardest question he asked was if I had thought about what team I'd like to be drafted by, because the answer is no. I really hadn't. That doesn't sound like the answer he wants, but I'm an honest hard working man, I'm not about to compromise my character to sweeten up to a team in particular. In hindsight I might have been able to answer it better, but what it really came down to, is I want to play for the team that gives me the opportunity to play, the opportunity to succeed. To me, that is what every part of this league is, opportunity. Everyone has the ability to fail or flourish on their own merits. You give me the opportunity, I'll give you everything I got. We have the same goals. Me and every team out there, we want to win, we want to be the best, and we want to be remembered.
