Lionel Rumper - Safety - Wake Forest
Ht: 6’1” Wt: 226lbs
Player Bio
A leader by example on the Demon Deacon defence, a man of few words and less interceptions, Rumper’s strength lies in the run game. With a powerfully built lower half and the ability to track down and violently secure collegiate ball carriers, Rumper’s highlight reel collisions have elevated his draft stock. An interview with Rumper went viral after he was asked, “how is it that you hit so hard?” His reply was simple “you got to hump with ya rump to bring that thump”. His team mates affectionally referred to him as “Lionel Thumper”, “Rumpy Thumpy” and “Big Rump Nasty”.
Starting all 13 games of his senior season at Wake Forest, Lionel Rumper truly was a demon in the run game for the Demon Deacons. Finishing up the season with 111 tackles (9 for loss, 1 sack), Rumper also managed to force 7 fumbles in his final season, leading Wake Forest in fumbles forced. He managed just one interception.
Overview
A fearless tackler with solid skills and well above average stopping power, Lionel Rumper is ideally suited in the role of a box safety, working as an underneath zone defender. He possesses the speed and range to play in a two high system but will struggle with single high responsibilities. Can play man, but isn’t a strength versus quicker receivers.
Strengths
- Sure and violent tackler with above average stopping power
- Relentless motor
- Produces turnovers in the run game
- Capable zone defender when working underneath, showing the ability to punish would be receivers
Weaknesses
- Doesn’t have the top end speed to play in a single high scheme as the high defender
- Lack of production with INTs, only one in his collegiate career
- Can be too aggressive into contact at times, has drawn flags
