Now I know my headline is a bit... shocking, but it is meant to be. This may not be the most conventional statistical analysis but I believe it is an important one.
Here is what the media payout page says about bonuses and what they are meant to encourage: "This is to encourage longer articles and hopefully not so many people just writing the basic article to hit the word count."
However, with the way the bonuses are set up, they are encouraging the exact opposite of that. Let me explain further. Here is the current payout structure:
•Tier 1: 600 words : $400k bonus
•Tier 2: 1000 words: $600k bonus
•Tier 3: 2000 words: $800k bonus
•Tier 4: 3000 words: $1.5mil bonus
•Tier 5: 4000 words: $1.75mil bonus
•Tier 6: 5000 words: $2mil bonus
Now... if the goal is to encourage writing longer articles, then adding steeper bonuses is obviously the right idea. But, this is a very basic understanding of how math works in a nutshell. Yes the bonuses are getting bigger but you are not actually earning more.
Here is the actual statistical analysis now:
Based on those tiers, where do you actually earn the most?
Again based on the tiers you have:
•Tier 1: 600 words : $1 million total
•Tier 2: 1000 words: $1.6 million total
•Tier 3: 2000 words: $2.8 million total
•Tier 4: 3000 words: $4.5 million total
•Tier 5: 4000 words: $5.75 million total
•Tier 6: 5000 words: $7 million total
And if you do not hit any tiers, the media payout obviously states that every word is worth 1,000 dollars. However, adding in these bonuses, we see that a word can have very different, and honestly quite random values. Take a look now at this:
•Tier 1: 600 words : $1,666 per word
•Tier 2: 1000 words: $1,600 per word
•Tier 3: 2000 words: $1,400 per word
•Tier 4: 3000 words: $1,500 per word
•Tier 5: 4000 words: $1,437 per word
•Tier 6: 5000 words: $1,400 per word
Not only are these numbers extremely random (going up and down seemingly without rhyme or reason), but additionally, as I said, they do exactly the opposite of what the point was. Instead of pushing for longer articles and giving them more reward, your best bet is to write 600 word article and get paid a whopping 1,666 dollars per word. If you write 2000 words you suddenly make a lot less, only 1,400 dollars per word, the same as a 5000 word article. It just doesn't make any sense and these numbers should absolutely be changed to reflect what they were meant to do.
