Robert Phelps had a pretty spectacular season in the NSFL, even if it was overshadowed by his loss of the receiving yard race in the last week of the season. Phelps has managed to move into the top rankings of wide receivers in this league despite being a low ranked option at the S1 draft. Phelps was drafted in the 12th round of the innagural draft of the NSFL, 73rd overall. We managed to catch up with Phelps as he was doing his off season training to ask a few questions.
Reporter: Hi Robert, thanks for taking the time out of your day to talk with us.
Phelps: Happy to be here, and to take a bit of a breather.
Reporter: First I wanted to ask about the NSFL expansion draft, what did you think of it and how do you think it affects you and the otters?
Phelps: I was not a fan of it. I felt like the competition in the league was great last season and I think we could have gotten by adding just one more team. Now we ended up losing some great players who were good friends of mine and the entire league was shooken up by all the changes to rosters because of the expansion. I was glad to be protected so I didn't have to worry about where I was going to have to move to, but I felt bad for my teammates who were exposed. I actually tried to avoid watching it, but I did get some good bye texts from those who got taken. It was a sad day for me. Since then I've just been focusing on training and getting ready for season 2.
Reporter: What has been your main focus with your training this off-season?
Phelps: I've worked on a few things, I've been trying to get faster and stronger, but I've also worked a bit on horizontal movement. My trainer thinks that my straight line running is getting to a point that it should be good enough to out run most, but being able to deke around them is something I need work on. So I'm trying some new exercises and working on that.
Reporter: Are you looking forward to starting your next season?
Phelps: Absolutely. This off-season has been way too long and I'm ready to get back at it.
Reporter: You and Bradley Westfield seemed pretty close last season, are you glad to be back on the same team again?
Phelps: Westy is a fantastic teammate. I think my production last season overshadowed his great season, but he was quick to rub his touch down numbers in my face. We keep each other competitive but are great buds at the same time, so it works out really well. I can't wait to get back on the field along side Westy and start catching some balls together.
Reporter: What are your goals for the season?
Phelps: Honestly I've had such a great run in this league so far, I just want to stay near the top. I was bitter about losing the receiving yards race to Josh Garden, but he had an incredible season and looking back on it now I know that I did too. Props to him improving his game to pass me at the end there. I would love to be on top of the receivers in catches again and to pass them in other categories, but mostly I just want to stay high on people's list of great receivers. I'm proud of what I've done, but it's only the beginning. I will continue to get better and better, but this season people will expect it a bit more.
Reporter: Thanks again for your time today.
Phelps: Thanks for having me.
