With talks about expansion ramping up over the past couple of weeks, I thought it would be fun to take some time to explore this topic more. The need for expansion is increasing as talented rookie classes continue to fill the roster spots of ISFL teams. With one of the largest classes set to come through the ISFL draft after next season, we need to be thinking about expansion now more than ever. Now when it comes to expansion, the talks of roster shake ups and the plans that General Managers have been working on to get their teams to where they want them all go out the window. Expansion means the need for more GM positions and Updaters, as well as some other higher up positions. However, that is the complicated and uninteresting part of expansion. What we really want to know is who the new teams are going to be. What is going to be their branding? I know for me it is fun to just start thinking about all the new potential locations for the ISFL and so I decided to write about it! I wanted to take a look at potential destinations and possible mascots for each of these locations. Of course I will provide my reasoning, but mainly I hope to just have fun with these ideas! Also, I wanted to keep in mind that we are now known as the International Simulation Football League. This means that it is time to expand our horizons and spread out into the world!
Location: Melbourne, Australia
Reasoning: The coastal capital of the Australian state of Victoria, Melbourne is the second most populous city in Australia. Now I lot of you are probably thinking to yourselves; "Why does population matter, it is a simulation football league." To you individuals I would just like to politely ask you to think about any sort of real life expansion. Population is one of the most crucial statistics when it comes to choosing an expansion location. Not only the number of people but, their general interest of the population as well. Melbourne is home to the Melbourne Rebels which is an Australian professional rugby union team that has been there since 2011. They also are host to a wide variety of soccer clubs throughout the city. This shows us that Melbourne would be a great place for expansion. In a recent poll that no one did and is actually non-existent, 87% of the population was in favor of bringing simulation football to the city. When it comes to the possible names of the potential expansion. The 3 that I have chosen all would fit the area perfectly.
Possible Names:
Flyers: First, my favorite one is the Flyers. It is hard to think of Australia and not think of Kangaroos, which are the national animal of the country. A common nickname for the animal is Flyer due to their ability jump and I think it just fits perfectly for this potential expansion location.
Commandos: The next option is the Commandos. This comes from the name of the elite Australian military force the Australian Commandos that has been used by special forces in Australia since 1941-1942. This name would pay homage to the elite fighting force that is recognized around the world.
Diggers: Our final option for this potential team is the Diggers. Digger is a military slang term for soldiers from Australia. The use of this term has dated back to the 1850s and was said to produce what was referred to as mateship with the soldiers. Mateship is an Australian cultural idiom that embodies equality, loyalty, and friendship. All of those qualities would be great to associate with an expansion team.
Colors:
Green, Yellow, and White
These colors are pretty obvious, as they are the National colours of Australia and with this team being one that will represent an entire country, I thought it was appropriate that they focus on the national pride of the team rather than the local pride.
Location: Mexico City, Mexico
Reasoning: This one seems like a very obvious location for a future expansion team. Talks swirl around this city all the time in order to bring a National Football League Franchise here and nothing has ever happened. So I say we give them something better, a Simulation Football League Franchise. Legions of fans pour out into the streets wearing all yellow as their local soccer club plays and every year the stadium is packed to the brim when the NFL plays their one game in the famed Azteca stadium, which is just screaming to have a Football Team play there as their homefield. I believe the sim would have to give a bonus advantage to the team that calls Mexico City their home due to just how crazy these fans can get. Mexico City bolsters a population of around 9 million people and I believe that every single one of them will wear the colors of the local team come game day.
Possible Names:
Warriors: My favorite option for this potential franchise is the Eagle Warriors, or just Warriors. A special class of infantry soldiers in the mighty Aztec Army. They were made up of the bravest soldiers that came from noble birth and also who had captured the most prisoners in battle. The life of an Eagle Warrior was one of constant battle as their primary purpose was to continually capture prisoners to sacrifice to their Gods. The Eagle Warrior was responsible for the expansion of power and importance in the Aztec Empire and I believe that its name would bring forth a sense of power and importance to the expansion team here in Mexico City.
Jaguars: The national mammal of Mexico comes in at my second favorite option for an expansion team name for this location. A fierce animal whose name derives the word ‘yaguar’ which means ‘he who kills with one leap’. The Jaguar is regarded as the bravest of beasts and the proud ruler of the animal world when it comes to Mexican Culture and that makes it a perfect fit for a potential expansion team in Mexico City.
Golden Eagles: My final option for the potential expansion team name would be the national bird and animal of Mexico. The Golden Eagle is the largest bird of prey in all of North America, Extremely dangerous and swift it dive upon their prey at more than 150 mile per hour...that pause was for you to gasp in disbelief. The bird is a symbol of the sun and victory. The only problem I have with this name and it is the same with the Eagle Warriors is that it can be kind of a mouthful to say but, it is a mouthful of pure awesomeness as well.
Colors:
Blue-Turquoise, Gold, and White
Blue-Turquoise and Gold would represent the precious metals that were so crucial to the Aztec Empire and using White as an accent color would allow the uniforms to pop and also carry some cultural significance behind them.
Location: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Reasoning: A huge seaside city of Brazil. It is home to beautiful beaches and around 6.5 million people. It is also home to the largest festival in the entire world, Carnaval! A city with an overabundance of culture and beauty that any player would be lucky to call home. Soccer is the staple sport of this area and the introduction of American Simulation Football would not change that anytime soon. However, the intense love for soccer shows us that this city is full of passion for its sports. Much like in Mexico City and the Azteca Stadium, Rio de Janeiro is home to one of the most iconic sports stadiums in the whole world, the Maracana. A stadium that can hold a capacity crowd of 80,000 fans and has seen World Cup glory on multiple occasions! This city is the best possible location to bring Simulation Football to South America, when expansion comes to that continent it has to be through here!
Possible Names:
Jaguars: My number one option for Brazil is the same as my number two option from Mexico City. The Rio de Janeiro Jaguars just has a nice ring to it and the Jaguar is an animal of great significance to the culture of brazil. It is known as the Brazilan Panther pound for pound is the strongest large cat in the world! So if you want a name that invokes fear and shows strength then you really cannot get much better than this.
Victory: Brazil is known for its culture and Rio is the epicenter of that culture. With Carnaval being the largest celebration every year it is important to give the city something to celebrate and the National Soccer Team has done that time and time again. Winning the FIFA World Cup a record 5 times. What better way to commemorate that culture of success than by naming your team the Rio de Janeiro Victory.
Canarinhos: A name that lacks ferocity but, makes up for it with its ability for people to relate to it. Canarinhos means The Little Canary, a name that has long been associated with the esteemed Brazilian National Soccer Team. An iconic name that references the yellow shirt that is worn by the team. I give this as an option because it is inevitable that the colors for this team are going to be yellow, yellow, and more yellow but, due to its lack of ferocity it does not rank as highly on my list.
Colors:
Yellow, Blue, and Green
The most famous and loved colors in all of Brazil, makes it a pretty easy choice for this team. Why try to find something new that the people might love, when you can just choose these colors and know that you will have the love of the people.
Location: Munich, Germany
Reasoning: A city home to century-old buildings and probably best known for its Oktoberfest celebration and beer halls, Munich is the international target for expansion. Germany has seen a growing interest in American Football with the establishment of the German Football League in 1979. With Canada and the United States leading the way as being the best Football locations in the world, Germany comes in as a strong 3rd. With almost 500 club teams and nearly 40,000 registered players, the country is ready for more football and simulation football can help to fill that gap! We already know the country has a passion for their sports so filling out stadiums on game day should never be a problem!
Possible Names:
Bruins: Munich is well known for their soccer team Bayern Munich, a team long known for their success and prestige brings a lovable bear mascot named Bernie to the community. With the love for the mascot and the just badassery of a bear in general I think choosing the name bruins for this franchise would resonate well with the community and instill fear in all the teams going against them!
Shepherds: I know a lot of people are probably putting their heads straight into their palms after hearing Shepherds as the team name. They are probably thinking to themselves, “What a terrible choice, this guy has just lost all credibility and I should stop reading now.” but, do not think of this as the lonely and boring Shepherd that watches over sheep. Instead, think of this as the ferocious German Shepherd that is an icon when it comes to special force animals. Choosing this name pays homage to the animal's roots and also makes for a pretty awesome mascot!
Stags: The national animal of Germany is the European roe deer, or also known as the Roebuck. As they are not the most aggressive or intimidating of animals I thought branding the team with Stags would add a little toughness to the logo and mascot. As this is not the most flashy choice, it makes up for it in acceptance and love from all of the German people.
Colors:
Brown, Black, and Silver
Not the most flashy colors when it comes to uniforms. However, what is would lack in flash it would make up for in its ability to show the toughness and grit that this franchise would want to showcase.
Location: Tokyo, Japan
Reasoning: Another country in which American Football has gained a lot of traction is Japan. With the founding of the Japan American Football League in 1971, recently rebranded to X-league in 1997; the groundwork has already been laid in order to produce a successful ISFL franchise. The busy capital of Tokyo would create a perfect atmosphere to host an ISFL franchise. The mix of neon-lit skyscrapers with historic temples will create an unparalleled atmosphere in the league. Hosting a population of around 9 million people, the one problem I could see this franchise having is keeping their merchandise on the shelves!
Possible Names:
Samurais: This choice seems kind of obvious, due to the history of the Samurai Warrior and their impact on the culture of Japan. The Samurai Warriors were a unit of nobility and carried with them prestige and honor. A staple of Japanese culture and a well recognized icon to the rest of the world means that this choice would be a safe and effective choice for the potential expansion team. However, it is not my favorite, but it should still get first choice!
Suns: This name is probably my favorite for this potential expansion team. The use of this name plays homage to the flag of Japan that sports a single crimson-red disc at its center. It is commonly referred to as the ‘flag of sun’ and the ‘circle of the sun’. It is used to embody the country’s saying of being the land of the Rising Sun. With all that in mind, it helps to make the Suns a clear choice in being the expansion franchises number 1 name.
Courage: Courage and honour lie at the heart of Japanese culture. Throughout history this has been shown time and time again. I think using Courage as the team name would be more than appropriate. It would serve as a reminder of the values of the Japanese culture and also make for a pretty amazing branding platform.
Colors:
Orange, Sparkling Gold and White
These colors would help to showcase Japan as being the land of the Rising Sun and would also make for some gorgeous jerseys!
Location: Nairobi, Kenya
Reasoning: The largest city Kenya and the 9th largest in Africa comes in here later as a potential expansion destination. As American Football continues to gain traction in Africa, Kenya stays at the forefront of the progression. Popularity is gaining and it would be naive of the ISFL to not take advantage and establish a long term simulation football franchise here. Sporting a population of 4.5 million people the city has more than enough interest to maintain a successful franchise. Nairobi is alo a tourist hub when it comes to finding safari trips and attracting people from all over the world to experience the culture Africa can offer! Simulation Football has a chance to be a mainstay in the area and to me that is an opportunity you just can not pass up!
Possible Names:
Lions: The national animal of Kenya, Lions seems like an obvious choice for the potential expansion team name. A muscular cat with a large flowing mane. A symbol of power that the Kenyan and African people can get behind. This mascot would allow for a promising future and would bring longevity to the franchise. It is definitely my favorite option, but it is not the only good one either.
Rhinos: Nairobi is famously known for being one of the few places on the earth that is breeding the endangered and near extinct Black Rhinoceros. I think it would be awesome to take a little of that aspect of Nairobi and incorporate it into the franchise. Not only does it show off something that Nairobi is famous for, it also is a pretty awesome mascot that would be easily loved and accepted by the population.
Chargers: The final option that I would recommend here; and it is very close to all of the other options that I have given, in terms of ranking, would be the Chargers. A name that is more recognized by the American Football community but that could also be tied into the same reasoning behind what was given for the Rhinos nickname. Utilizing both of those features would make for a pretty incredible franchise tag.
Colors:
Red, Green, and Black
The 3 colors of the Kenyan flag seem like a great choice here. I am not trying to make the potential colors of teams match the country's flag but, this one would be incredibly unique and definitely stand out in the league!
Location: Athens, Greece
Reasoning: Located at the heart of Ancient Greece, Athens, which currently stands as the capital of Greece, is a beautiful city that showcases all that Greece has to offer. One of the smallest cities that I am putting forward as a possible expansion location, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in beauty and culture. The place oozes history and would easily bring plenty of attention to a team that establishes their franchise there. Now American Football is struggling to gain traction in some areas of Europe, but this is why I believe that Simulation Football can be the kick in the butt that this country needs to showcase the great sport of American Football and support a franchise for generations to come!
Possible Names:
Spartans: One of the most obvious choices for mascot and team names for this area of the world is the Spartans. A fierce fighting force that believed to be a direct descendant of Hercules. Spartans were required to stay extremely fit and fight until the age of 60. A warrior that is the epitome of what you want a football player or franchise to stand for. The Spartan is a common mascot and team name across the United States but, if any one place was made to have this team name and logo, it was Athens.
Triremes: My next option is another that pays tribute to the history of Ancient Greece. The Trireme was an oar-driven warship that was long and slender. 3 tiers for oars and one sail made it cut through water and be a force that was feared by many ancient civilizations. The nose of the ship was used as a battering ram and could easily slice through the side of any wooden ships. An amazing piece of engineering that would be great as a name for the potential expansion team here in Athens, Greece.
Titans: Ancient Greece was known for their mythological lore that pitted gods like Zeus, Poseidon, and Athena against the mighty titans. Titans were of great size and power, they were a force that was to be feared and dominated stories of Ancient Greece. Even the mightiest of gods would fear their power and struggle to keep them in check. A being of such power and might would make for a great name and mascot that the Greek people would definitely get behind and accept.
Colors:
Blue, White, and Crimson
The Blue and White are the same as seen on the Greek Flag. The Crimson would match the crimson from the Ancient Greek warrior the spartan.
Location: Detroit, Michigan
Reasoning: Ok I know I said that the next set of expansion teams should be international and work towards making the International Simulation Football League just that. However, I was just too excited about a possible expansion team in the Motor City. A city of great history and significance in the United States. Throughout the 1950s Detroit was the wealthiest city in the entire world and was an icon to many. Responsible for so much industry and production the city was the backbone in providing the equipment the US needed in World War II. However, the success of Detroit was short-lived and by the 1960s the city went from being the wealthiest in the world to one of the poorest. Even now it struggles to keep from going under. However, one thing has remained positive in Detroit, and that is the love for sports. I think the ISFL has a chance to take advantage of that love by providing this city a franchise that will actually deliver when it comes to football championships!
Possible Names:
Motorheads: Known as the Motor City, Detroit has a long and industrious history when it comes to the automobile industry. Detroit was the birthplace of Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and Chevrolet and was home to countless automobile factories throughout its history. You cannot argue that the automobile shaped Detroit as a city and I believe it is only fitting to pay respect to that heritage with choosing a name like Motorheads as the team name.
Mustangs: Another name that is designed to pay respect to Detroit’s history in the automotive industry, the Mustang was an iconic car that was introduced in 1965 at the World Fair. The Mustang is still one of the most iconic cars that every American recognizes and should respect. I believe this name would be gladly accepted by the people of Detroit and would also serve as a pretty amazing team name and mascot.
Revolution: The name Revolution would not be a name that represents The American Revolution but, one that represents the Industrial Revolution. The introduction of important inventions such as steam locomotives, steamboats, and machines in factories that shaped the mid 1800s. While Detroit was not a key player in this revolution, the city kept the principal of industry at its heart and because of that I think a name that pays tribute to that time would be very appropriate for this possible expansion team.
Colors:
Zenith Blue, Tangerine and White
The colors of the famous Gulf Racing Team would be perfect for this franchise as they pay tribute to the cities history of being the automotive capital of the world.
Location: Rome, Italy
Reasoning: One of the most famous and iconic cities in the entire world, Rome had to make the shortlist as a potential expansion location for the ISFL. Since American Football is gaining traction in the country with the founding of the Italian Football League in 2008, it just makes sense to fuel that fire by giving them an expansion team for Simulation Football as well. With Rome being the capital and bolstering a population of nearly 3 million residents, it has more than enough ability to produce a successful and sustainable franchise for the ISFL. Not to mention that any of the players that are lucky enough to get to play here would be living in one of the most beautiful cities in the entire world.
Possible Names:
Gladiators: The first name comes from the iconic Roman Colosseum that provided nearly 50,000-80,000 people entertainment in Ancient Rome. The Colosseum now stands as a wonder in the modern world that millions of people flock to every year. The name Gladiators would help to embody that wonderment and joy that the Colosseum brought to the people of ancient times and to the people it still brings wonderment and joy to. The Gladiator was a fierce warrior that would be a great mascot for any football team, but especially a team based out of Rome, Italy.
Stallions: A close second in terms of my choice for possible expansion team names is the Stallions. A name that pays respect to one of the most iconic groups in all of Italy, Ferrari. With the nickname The Prancing Horse, Ferrari is a pillar in not only the Italian Community but also in Italian Culture as a whole. It is a name that is recognized by nearly everyone in the world and young kids will remember having a poster of those gorgeous cars on their wall growing up. So incorporating that fan base and spectacle into the possible ISFL expansion franchise would be almost a no brainer.
Legionaries: The famous name for the main Roman soldiers back in Ancient Rome. Legionaries were responsible for the ability of Rome to conquer and defend the territories of the great Roman Empire. They were not only expected to fight but, they were also expected and responsible for much of the infrastructure of the Roman Empire. An incredible fighting unit and a pillar in Roman history makes this a great choice for the team name.
Colors:
Red, Yellow, and White
Some of the most famous colors in all Rome and Italy. The colors would incorporate the Red of Ancient Rome and the Red that Ferrari's iconic cars still use today. The yellow and white would provide beautiful accents and create a truly stunning uniform.
Location: Oslo, Norway
Reasoning: The last expansion location that I am going to be writing about is probably one of my favorites for the bid. Oslo, Norway is not as flashy as the other locations but it is one of great history and would be a place that welcomed the addition of a Simulation Football team. When you think of Oslo it is hard to not think of Vikings. The Scandinavian city is famous for its history of the ancient warrior. Not only does Oslo bring the lore of viking warriors to the table but, it also brings a location in which the ISFL could not only involve the country of Norway but, the entire Scandinavia sub region in Northern Europe.
Possible Names:
Vikings: As you could have probably guessed from my reasoning of why Oslo should be an expansion location, you could probably see what my first choice is when it comes to the potential team name. The Vikings just seem to be the obvious choice for this location, a famous fighting unit that instilled fear in all that crossed their path.
Mountain Dogs: With nearly 652 mountains in the entirety of the Scandinavian sub region, the need for animals that can navigate these mountains is great. The mountain dogs are responsible for watching over the sheep and being a key part in any farmers homestead. An animal with great power and a loyalty that is second to none makes it a fun and unique option for a potential expansion team name!
Longships: A famous ancient water vessel used by the vikings was one that was designed to have speed. A long, narrow, and light wooden boat that characterized as being incredibly slender and flexible. The Longship allowed for the Vikings to have major naval power and were key to success in conflict. A more unique take for a name, it would be much more creative of a name than Vikings, while also paying respect to that culture.
Colors:
Navy, Red, Gold
The Navy and Red, represent Norway and the Gold helps to tie in the entire sub region of Scandinavia. As all 6 countries in the sub region share these same colors and would be represented in some shape.
Well there you have it. My Top 10 expansion locations for the impending ISFL expansion. Keep in mind that the list is in no particular order. I wish all of the individuals that are putting in an expansion bid all of the best. I hope that we can continue to expand beyond the United States with the bids and move more towards representing our name as the International Simulation Football League.
Location: Melbourne, Australia
Reasoning: The coastal capital of the Australian state of Victoria, Melbourne is the second most populous city in Australia. Now I lot of you are probably thinking to yourselves; "Why does population matter, it is a simulation football league." Mateship is an Australian cultural idiom that embodies equality, loyalty, and friendship.
