***Titles and Phatahls “Just Doing Me” kicks in, slowly fading down to just be heard in the background as narrator comes in***
Narrator: It’s been an active week for L’Gazzy Burfict, our local linebacker who had attended Rutgers University. As we left things last week L’Gazzy had been carrying out a final pre-draft workout under the strict guidance of father Dion. Later that evening, L’Gazzy would find out where he would be heading to play football in the upcoming DSFL season.
***Tape cuts to BoBo Saxton waiting patiently in the booth of a local diner. The diner is empty apart from a couple of guys knocking back drinks next to the pool table.***
BoBo Saxton: Huh, well another week, another episode, and what a week it has been. Some of you may already be aware of the draft news surrounding our main man L’Gazzy but let me start by saying…
*In walks L’Gazzy, a big smile on his face, wearing a cap*
BoBo Saxton: Huh, L’Gazzy, over here, where you been?
L’Gazzy Burfict: Hey there BoBo, I’m bout running late and all. Just caught up with a few of the guys outside the sport store who kept me talking for a while. How you bin anyway?
BoBo Saxton: Huh, hey, no first let me start; there is a smile on your face, you’re obviously wearing the cap, so take us through what happened after we left you last time.
*BoBo gestures to the bar tender to bring over a couple of beers and chasers*
L’Gazzy Burfict: Sure yeah, sure. Well let me think now. So I was feeling in great shape after that final workout down at the running track. Hey, even pops was tellin me that the times were looking good and I had a great chance. So we were back at pops house, family were there, having a great time and some great soul food, you know. I’ll be honest and say I didn’t know what to expect. I’d had a few long distance talks with some scouts, some of them got me more than others, you know. I was checking in with a few of the other guys from Rutgers, especially my man Rusch. There was a lotta hype ‘roud Rusch and hell, you saw how that went down. He got taken in the first, my man!
BoBo Saxton: Huh, but how did the evening develop for you yourself?
L’Gazzy Burfict: So yeah, I was feeling confident of being taken but I didn’t know who was gonna pick me up. I saw Rusch go early like I said, London, you know. I’d been talkin to this kid Tayshawn Crunk from the Natchez Bulldogs – we’d beaten them back in the day for the Mississippi State Championship and he’d gone and taken MVP, we kept in touch since then. We lost track of each other a little during college but he had shown some great things in his workout and then what you know, he got taken by the Royals at thirteen. And then you know, start thinking, where am I gonna end up? Wouldn’t it be great if I could head off with those guys, you know, play on the team with them. But I didn’t wanna get carried away, plus the scouts been making it sound like there were a fair few good options out there for me.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, and where did you end up L’Gazzy?
L’Gazzy Burfict: I ain’t gonna forget those words BoBo. With the 77th pick of the draft, the London Royals select L’Gazzy Burfict. We all got up, started dancing about. My pops started shouting out loud, screaming, he was so happy. And yeah, to top it all, I was heading to London with my man Rusch and Crunk. I knew I’d be ok with those two going along for the ride.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, that really is fabulous, the good news getting taken and also that you aready knew a few of the other guys in the locker room – that’s gotta help. So fast forward a little for us now. You’re taken by the London Royals, we all saw you take to Twitter to try figure out how to get yourself a passport…
L’Gazzy Burfict: Yeah I ain’t been outside this great nation before so I had no need. The things you gotta do, but I want to play football, and I wanna play for whoever got that faith in me. And that faith is in London, i’m a Royal!
BoBo Saxton: Huh, and then pre-season came pretty quickly – tell us a little about that if you can.
L’Gazzy Burfict: Sure BoBo, I felt blessed to be with such an organisation. I was finding my feet a little, new country, but the support was great. I had a little time to take a look around the city and then with the pre-season games… it was a chance to get on the field, do what I do best, show the organisation why they were right to put that faith in me at 77.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, and things went well from your perspective?
L’Gazzy Burfict: You know, things went ok. We played well as a team, and we played a little crappy as a team. That’s just part of the process, getting to know each other. The other LBs, they helped me settle in great on the line. Maybe the offence saw me a weak link, I don’t know, but it just gives me that fire and I ended up making some game leading numbers. You can’t be asking for more than that, I was happy, blessed, you know.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, yeah that sounds very impressive, a rookie like yourself taking that opportunity, delivering on the field, I gotta hold it to you. Now you know where I’m heading now don’t you?
L’Gazzy Burfict: For sure, I know why you got me down here, we got that first big W on the road, we’re 1 and 0!
BoBo Saxton: Huh, you’re meant to leave that for me to say, L’Gazzy! But yeah, I wanted to get you down here before you fly back to London. At the moment the guys upstairs won’t get me a out to see you there so maybe you have to win a few more and change their minds!
L’Gazzy Burfict: Well I’ll do my best. We were good as a team to beat the Grey Ducks, especially after we’d lost out in pre season. And then coming up we got the double header. I’d had some good talks with the scouts from Dallas, and you know, I didn’t end up going there. That is what it is, BoBo. So I’m looking forward to playin those guys, see what they all about, and they can see what they missing out on… hopefully! It’s gonna be mad one, one home, one on the road. But that’s football. I hope the next time you see me we be talking about some more Ws and what the Royals might achieve this season, you feel me?
BoBo Saxton: Huh, well what can I say. We are so proud and just delighted that you’ve gotten off to the good start that we all hoped for. It looks like London got themselves a bit of a steal at 77 – I know they had spoken about looking to trade up for you but all that matters is that you got taken by an organisation that wanted you, that will let you develop, and who know, win some silverware. So folks, I’m gonna leave it there for this week. Keep an eye out for those matches, see if you can tune in and follow our man L’Gazzy Burfict reppin it for the London Royals. And with that there is only one thing left for me to say. Take care, BoBo out.
