Lock down corner.
Franchise quarterback.
Game-wrecking edge rusher.
Those positions are sexy. They command the highest salaries and often have general managers salivating from day one. Whether it's bench reps at the combine, hours of highlight tape, or a blazing fast 40, those players are often the face of their teams and their city. They get the accolades, the press, and the jersey sales. But you know what you need in crunch time - when the opponent has us on our heels and it's late in the fourth quarter?
Someone who isn't worried about stats, individual trophies, or getting on Sportscenter. Someone who's entire football career has been about being the last line of defense. Someone who can command the entire defense and strike fear in the opposing team without even having to make a play. Someone who started three years at Georgia and impacted the game on virtually every defensive snap. Someone who's willing to play special teams and do whatever it takes to get a win.
Blitz? Sure. Help against the run? Absolutely. Impact the passing game? Every play.
You need a do-everything safety to command the defense. In the immortal words of Reggie Jackson, we're the straw that stirs the drinks. We may not get the publicity, the contracts, or the prestige of some of the flashier positions, but that's just fine with us. We're happy to sit back, bide our time, and be the invisible defensive hand that guides the team. It's often said of defensive backs that no news is good news, and that you may never hear about the best corners or safeties because of their shutdown impact they can have on a team. But we don't mind that one bit - we're simply built differently. We want to win. We want to shutdown the offense. And we don't care one bit about accolades.
At the end of the day, you may not hear much about us, but we're worth way more than just two points.
