Once again I have decided to sit down with this horrifying monster ...err I mean gentle giant Brick Van Sanzo to discuss his first season in the DSFL with the Minnesota Grey Ducks, This time breaking down his stat lines and getting his thoughts on each game he played throughout the season as well as my evaluation of the games as a whole and some overall opinions and observations for any ISFL scouts ahead of the draft tomorrow.
Week 1: Minnesota Grey Ducks 21 VS London Royals 24
Tale of the Tape
Tackles: 4
Tackles for Loss: 2
Sacks: 0
My thoughts:
This was a frustrating start to the season with Minnesota not putting any points on the board until the Third Quarter, Jameson Vermillion and Mitch Rotchburns accounted for Minnesotas entire offense nearly with Minnesota only gaining a sad 95 yards in the passing game. Minnesota was only able to convert on 2/11 3rds downs. Minnesota was able to recover a fumble and turn it into a touchdown which seems to be the only reason the spread was as close as it was. Minnesotas Defense tried their best to keep it close by forcing a fumble and recovering it as well as sacking the opposing quarterback a total of 5 times during the game.
Brick showed up for 4 tackles, the first tackle he managed to pop londons quarterback after a rush for 0 yards. The second tackle he helped stop london dead in their tracks by tackling the running back for a gain of 0 after london was backed up 5 yards due to a sack by A. Ranger, this tackle for loss helped when london was only able to gain 7 yards on the next play, forcing them to punt it away.
Bricks thinky words :
Felt real good hitting them in the backfield, being used to getting double teamed its really nice to get back there and cause some havoc. Brick not too happy about end result, BRICK DON'T LIKE CLOSE GAMES
Week 2: Minnesota Grey Ducks 0 @ Norfolk Seawolves 20
Tale of the Tape
Tackles: 0
Tackles for Loss: 0
Sacks: 0
My thoughts:
As the score shows this was a brutal game for minnesota, Minnesota was able to pass a bit more than the previous game but had nothing to show for it when they couldn't find their way into the endzone, or even able to get a field goal on the board. With Minnesota only getting a total of 6 first downs the entire game and norfolk dominating the time of possession, the defense wasn't able to put much together this game either.
Bricks thinky words :
BRICK HATE THIS GAME, SO FRUSTRATING (at this point Brick stormed off into the parking lot and may have flipped a car or two before the security team was able to wrangle him back in )
Week 3: Minnesota Grey Ducks 19 @ Portland Pythons 15
Tale of the Tape
Tackles: 3
Tackles for Loss: 1
Sacks: 0
My thoughts:
Getting their first win of the season in week three, minnesota managed to put together a decently balanced attack against portland, by no means an offensive power house; minnesota managed to win even with gaining less first downs than the pythons throughout the game. Both teams defenses showed up big in this one but minnesotas showed up bigger, holding the pythons to only fieldgoals for the entire game.
Brick was able to secure 3 tackles during the game, one being for loss. The one for loss was on a first and 10 and seemed like it was really going to help until portland was able to make a clutch pass on a 3rd and 10 to score a field goal.
Bricks thinky words :
First real grind out win of the season felt good, Brick like it when he puts up tackles for loss.
Week 4: Minnesota Grey Ducks 30 VS Tiajuana Luchadores 25
Tale of the Tape
Tackles: 3
Tackles for Loss: 1
Sacks: 1
My thoughts:
Very intense back and forth game for minnesota, being outpaced in nearly every offensive category, minnesota was able to come out with a win in a very touch matchup. With touchdowns from both of the running backs and a rushing touchdown with their quarterback, minnesota was able to stuff the ball into the endzone and pull off the victory.
Bricks first real great showing of the season showed him getting 3 tackles a tackle for loss and a big -6 yard sack which helped stop a luchadores drive dead in its tracks.
Bricks thinky words :
BRICK LOVE TO SACK, FEEL THE ANGUISH OF THE OPPOSING FANS AND QUARTERBACK.
Week 5: Minnesota Grey Ducks 10 @ Dallas Birddogs 30
Tale of the Tape
Tackles: 1
Tackles for Loss: 0
Sacks: 0
My thoughts:
Awful game for Minnesota and Brick alike. Minnesota was unable to convert a single of their 14 3rd down attempts and only managed 88 yards passing the entire game. Dallas was able to impose their will and score touchdown after touchdown in the first half of the game. Minnesota was able to come back and hold them to nothing in the third quarter and only 6 points in the fourth but at that point the damage was done.
Brick managed a tackle in the third quarter, helping to hold the birddogs to nothing in the third.
Bricks thinky words :
We couldn't stop them in the first half. Brick was hungry and BRICK STARVED
Week 6: Minnesota Grey Ducks 21 VS Kansas City Coyotes 31
Tale of the Tape
Tackles: 2
Tackles for Loss: 2
Sacks: 0
My thoughts:
A closer game but yet another loss for Minnesota in week 6, with Minnesota actually able to convert 7 of their 14 3rd down attempts. Minnesota was able to feed their running backs and actually even score a passing touchdown in this game but Kansas City was able to fund the endzone 4 times. With the inefficiency of the passing game and the quarter back turning over the ball twice Minnesota effectively gave this one away.
Brick was able to secure a couple of tackles in the backfield which helped keep the game close, but in the end it didn't go his way.
Bricks thinky words :
I was able to power my way through a couple of times and catch them but in the end I feel like I wasn't able to get loose enough. BRICK WANTED TO RUN WILD LIKE A DUCK PROWLING ON SAD DESPERATE COYOTES, BRICK TEETH NOT SHARP ENOUGH
Week 7: Minnesota Grey Ducks 6 VS Myrtle Beach Buccaneers 26
Tale of the Tape
Tackles: 5
Tackles for Loss: 3
Sacks: 0
My thoughts:
Minnesota was actually pretty efficient on their third down conversion rate in this game but with their backs only averaging ~4 yards a carry, they weren't able to make it up in the passing game and score those goals. Minnesota was only able to put 6 on the board and it just wasn't enough. Credit to Mytle Beachs defense for even putting a safety on the board against Minnesota. Minnesotas Defense wasn't able to stop as many drives as they would have liked.
Brick put up several tackles and was able to get into the backfield 3 times, but it wasn't enough at the end of the day.
Bricks thinky words :
HUGE GAME, FOUND MY WAY ALL OVER THE PLACE BUT IT WASN'T ENOUGH. BRICK HAPPY BUT WANTED THE WIN
Week 8: Minnesota Grey Ducks 15 @ London Royals 24
Tale of the Tape
Tackles: 2
Tackles for Loss: 1
Sacks: 0
My thoughts:
Minnesota was able to win the first down game in this one but only being able to put up 1 touchdown and 2 Field goals was not enough to secure the victory here. Minnesota was actually able to secure a passing touchdown with Peterson stepping in at QB and earning himself a nice passer rating of 97.9 but Londons Quarterback was on fire with a QB rating of 106.7 which helped him lead his team to victory.
Brick was able to get into the backfield only once and managed another tackle besides.
Bricks thinky words :
BRICK HATE LONDON
Week 9: Minnesota Grey Ducks 19 VS Norfolk Seawolves 12
Tale of the Tape
Tackles: 3
Tackles for Loss: 1
Sacks: 0
My thoughts:
A huge win for Minnesota, taking out the most dangerous team in the DSFL at the time. The defense was able to hold Norfolk to only field goals the entire game. With Mike Rotchburns leading the charge with 2 touchdowns. With a stellar performance from SS Oliver Sloan who racked up 8 tackles and an interception, Minnesota begins to look like they may turn this thing around yet.
Brick was able to get into the backfield once and rack up another 2 tackles besides
Bricks thinky words :
BRICK SO DAMN PROUD OF HIS DUCKS *LOUD SOBBING* GONNA MISS THEM SO MUCH *EVEN LOUDER SOBBING* QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK
Week 10: Minnesota Grey Ducks 16 VS Portland Pythons 15
Tale of the Tape
Tackles: 2
Tackles for Loss: 0
Sacks: 1
My thoughts:
Another slim Victory for the Ducks but a win is a win. Minnesota was able to manage 21 first downs to portlands 9, effectively dominating the time of possession. However portland was able to keep it close with a touchdown and a safety. The real MVP of this game was QB Peterson who was able to complete 13/16 for a touchdown, giving him a great QBR of 115.1.
Minnesotas defense was able to keep it tight by holding the Pythons to only 1 touchdown, Brick was able to secure a sack for -10 yards on a third and 3 which held the pythons to a field goal at the end of the half, really contributing to the victory.
Bricks thinky words :
BRICK FAVORITE SACK OF THE SEASON, POPPED THAT GUY SO BAD HIS GREAT GRANDMA FELT IT, BRICK LOVE TO SACK AND BRICK LOVE TO WIN
Week 11: Minnesota Grey Ducks 13 @ Tiajuana Luchadores 27
Tale of the Tape
Tackles: 1
Tackles for Loss: 1
Sacks: 0
My thoughts:
A rough game for minnesota both offensively and defensively. Minnesota was only able to convert 4/16 third downs and QB Peterson had a bad day with a QBR of 60.1, with the rushing yards stuck under 165, minnesotas most dangerous assets were held in check. Mike Rotchburns was able to put up a touchdown but it was the only one on the day for Minnesota.
Brick was able to get into the backfield once as the defense as a whole couldn't stop the luchadores well enough to secure a vicory.
Bricks thinky words :
BRICK DID NOT HAVE FUN THAT DAY, BRICK HATE WRESTLING, THE MASKS SCARED BRICK AS A CHILD
Week 12: Minnesota Grey Ducks 0 VS Dallas Birddogs 13
Tale of the Tape
Tackles: 1
Tackles for Loss: 1
Sacks: 0
My thoughts:
This game was just flat out brutal. The ducks were able to hold the Birddogs to nothing in the second half of the game and only 13 points in the first half. Unfortunately the Birddogs defense completely shut out the MN offense. Nobody had a good game on Minnesota on offense, leaving a total of 167 yards on the field.
Forreal though, f**k this game.
Brick secured a tackle for loss, but it didn't help in the long run.
Bricks thinky words :
F**K THIS GAME, BRICK SO ANGRY AGAIN
Week 13: Minnesota Grey Ducks 17 @ Kansas City Coyotes 13
Tale of the Tape
Tackles: 1
Tackles for Loss: 0
Sacks: 0
My thoughts:
A close victory for Minnesota, with minnesota gaining 21 first downs and Kansas City only gaining 13, minnesota won the time of possession game. Minnesota was able to get a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown as well as Brasky slamming in a 41 yard field goal.
Minnesotas defense was unable to get to the quarterback all day but a slew of passes defended helped them slow Kansas City down just enough to get the victory.
Brick was able to secure a tackle.
Bricks thinky words :
We played our game and came out with the W, wasn't pretty but football does that.
Week 14: Minnesota Grey Ducks 10 @ Myrtle Beach Buccaneers 54
Tale of the Tape
Tackles: 3
Tackles for Loss: 3
Sacks: 0
My thoughts:
Final game of the season was pure slaughter. Minnesotas defense allowed anything and everything through and there was nothing the offense could do to keep up with the amount of points Myrtle beach put on the board.
Brick was able to get into the backfield 3 times but in the long run it didn't matter.
Bricks thinky words :
OW, I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT THIS ONE, WOUNDS ARE TOO FRESH.
Total Stats and Final Thoughts
Tackles: 31
Tackles for Loss: 16
Sacks: 2
Ranked 3rd most Tackles for loss out of all defensive players in the DSFL with 16 just 4 below Etrigan T. Slayer who has 20 Tackles for loss on the season. If you are looking for a good power rusher with Great strength and Speed then Brick is your guy, while he is not one of the best Defensive ends in the draft class, he certainly would be a great value in one of the later rounds for a team looking for a developmental defensive end.
