Safety Evan Jones from Ohio State university has wrapped up his college career and has decided to declare for the DSFL draft, which takes place later this week. We talked to a couple of scouts from across the league on what they feel Jones can bring to the table.
Scout 1: Jones has all the makings of an elite safety. He is a really smart player who is very rarely caught out of position. His ability to watch the QB and make the correct read on passing plays is far and above his peers. But it’s not just that which stands out about his game, he does everything else at a high level. He is able to keep up with the fastest guys on the field, and can get around guys without an issue. One area he struggled with a bit in college was tackling, sometimes guys would be able to break away from him, but he says he has worked on that expensively this offseason, so I guess we will see if he can prove it at the prospect bowl this week.
Scout 2: I’ve loved what I have seen from Jones, I think he can be a great player in the big leagues one day. He is a phenomenal athlete, able to make plays all across the field with his speed. He is a real every down player on defense who is impactful in both the passing and rushing defense. Tackling is good, but needs a little work. Smart player who is great at reading the play, and he is able to back up his reads with the ability to get into the right spot to break up the play. Decent hands for a safety, he is able to make plays on balls in the air and come down with some interceptions.
