Week 2 of the DSFL. The first half of S25s’ first double header for these 8 teams. Some found success, some didn’t. Once again I will be picking an OPOTG and DPOTG for each matchup and then an overall OPOTW and DPOTW and then after all that will give a quick list of my personal power rankings and why I’ve placed each team where I have. I have also opted to remove the game highlights section opting for a more thorough summary of the game.
Game 1 : Tijuana Luchadores (0-1) @ London Royals (1-0), Royals win 31-12
After dropping a home game against Minnesota in a closely fought contest the previous week, the Luchadores went to London hoping to pull out an upset victory over the reigning champions however found no such luck, being soundly beaten by the Royals. London surpassed Tijuana in offensive yards gained both on the ground and in the air, and combine that with 2 fumbles by the Luchadores, they stood no chance. They will be looking to tidy up on both sides of the ball for their next game against the Birddogs.
There were some positives to be taken from the game for Tijuana however with rookie wide receiver Quavious McGrady getting 70 yards on just 8 receptions, and rookie offensive guard Jack Cobb accruing 5 pancakes on the day. This was accompanied by returner NationalSimulation FootballLeague getting an impressive 192 yards on just 7 returns.
For the Royals it was really just an all around great team performance, not turning the ball over once and only committing 6 penalties for a combined 45 yards, with 1 of those being a 15 yard penalty by the aptly named Burfict. A bright spot for them will be quarterback Cortez’ significant improvement on last weeks performance, throwing for 157 yards and a TD, but most importantly not turning the ball over.
OPOTG :
Terry Yaki, Running Back, London – After giving this to Yakis partner Hana last week, I felt Yaki impressed the most on offense in this matchup with 28 carries for 107 yards and 2 TDs’.
DPOTG :
L’Gazzy Burfict, Linebacker, London – Not a great day out for defensive statistics, Burficts’ 4 tackles and 2 sacks were enough to earn him this award from me.
Game 2 : Dallas Birddogs(0-1) @ Minnesota Grey Ducks(1-0), Grey Ducks win 20-17
Whilst not the highest scoring of games, this game was a thoroughly entertaining one. Underdogs Dallas, went to Minnesota looking to bounce back from a tough week 1 defeat and unfortunately were denied victory by a narrow margin. Dallas will be hosting Tijuana next week and 0-3 awaits for the losers, which neither team wants to be at this stage in the season.
This game was a truly great one if you are a fan of running backs, with both teams eclipsing 200 yards on the ground and 4 rookie running backs surpassing 75 yards on the day. Despite getting 9 more first downs than their opponents(23-14), the Grey Ducks once again had to rely on their rookie kicker Gluteus Maximus to hit a game winner for them, with this one coming 3 minutes into overtime. Despite being 2-0 after this game they will need to start closing games out more convincingly to get themselves looking like a true contender.
As well as running backs, both teams offensive lines will be relatively pleased with themselves combining for 38 pancakes throughout the day, something which was not rewarded much by their quarterbacks who had passer ratings of 62.7 and 69.5 respectively
OPOTG :
Cobra Kai, Running Back, Dallas : There was competition for this from 4 of the running backs that played in this game, but this rookies 144 yards on 16 carries, capped off with a massive 68 yard touchdown at the end of the second quarter, was enough to win him this award in my book.
DPOTG :
Damian Blackfyre, Safety, Grey Ducks – Another game that did not particularly flatter the defense in terms of the yards each team gained, yet there were still some players with solid numbers. The solid-est of which, in my opinion, was this mans 6 tackles, 1 for a loss, 1 PD and an interception.
Game 3 : Kansas City Coyotes(0-1) @ Norfolk Seawolves(0-1), Coyotes win 20-7
The two lowest scoring teams faced off in this matchup both looking to grab a much needed win after awful openers. However, it was the away side in this game who found themselves taking home the win, and rather comfortably at that, if you were to go by the scoreboard.
For Kansas City, in the end it was an easy win, despite the fact that halfway through the fourth quarter they only held a 3 point lead. A good rushing display from the Coyotes as they nearly had more rushing yards than Norfolk has total yards, with 175 yards on the ground compared to the Seawolves 177. They will also be happy with rookie reciever H.H. Hopkins’ performance as he caught 5 passes for a total of 70 yards.
From Norfolk’s perspective this game can simply be written off as there were hardly any positives for them to take from it. In contrast with KCs quality rushing performance, Norfolk gave Mr. Forty Two the ball 34 times and he ran for just 88 yards, an average of only 2.6 YPC. Maybe they could do with some load management, after all, Kansas City’s two backs didn’t even get as many carries as Norfolk’s lone rookie.
OPOTG :
Sergio Kitchens, Running Back, Kansas City – Kitchens put up very solid numbers and in my opinion was far and away the best offensive player in this game, with 18 carries for 77 yards and a TD, and 3 receptions for 39 yards and a TD, making it 116 yards from scrimmages and 2 TDs for him on the day.
DPOTG
Dimitrius Rogers, Defensive End, Norfolk – Frankly, there was a player on the Coyotes defense with the exact same stats as Rogers, 7 tackles, 2 for a loss plus a sack, but the reason I gave it to this man was because this rookies performance was probably one of the only good thing about this dismal Seawolves showing.
Game 4 : Myrtle Beach Buccaneers(1-0) @ Portland Pythons(1-0), Pythons win 44-10
Both teams in this matchup were looking strong coming out of the opening week, and despite the fact that the Buccaneers had to travel to Portland for this game, I think it was safe to say that no one, save for those in the Pythons camp, were expecting the blowout that was to occur.
For Myrtle Beach this game is one they will want to quickly forget about, and bounce back from in their week 3 matchup against the Minnesota Grey Ducks. If it hadn’t been for a garbage time passing TD from promising rookie qb Jackie Daytona, Myrtle Beach would have finished the game with 3 points.
From a Portland perspective, there is so much to talk about in this game. Nearly every player on the team performed well, and even those who didn’t perform well did not perform poorly. The offensive line got 21 pancakes and didn’t allow a sack and the defense got 8 PDs. 6 Portland receivers got over 3 catches and of those 6, 5 had a longest catch of 10+ yards. Both running backs ran for over 80 yards on 15 and 18 carries respectively, this game will be a highlight of Portland’s season and will surely give them momentum in their next game going to Kansas City.
OPOTG :
LeBron James III, Quarterback, Portland – This rookie, picked 5th overall in the draft, threw a stellar 245 passing yards with a 76% completion rate. He threw for 7.2 Yards per Attempt, and a whopping 9.4 Yards per Completion, getting 2 TDs and a 103.2 QBR in the process.
DPOTG :
Moe Skeeter, Safety, Portland – While their were a lot of players on the Portland defense who could have picked this up, and a couple of decent performances on the Myrtle Beach defense aswell, I gave this man the award as he got 5 tackles, 1 PD and an interception, which he returned 32 yards for a TD. He’ll be hoping for a lot more of those in the weeks to come.
Offensive Player of the Week :
Dallas Running Back, Cobra Kai
Another week and another rookie takes home this award. A tough choice between this man and the Portland QB, but 150 yards rushing is not something you see everyday and Kai is arguably the best running back in the league after 2 weeks, albeit on one of the weakest squads.
Defensive Player of the Week :
Portland Safety, Moe Skeeter
Similar to rookies winning the offensive award back to back, a Portland defender takes DPOTW home for the second week in a row. Overall, in my opinion, not a fantastic week for defenses throughout the league, but this mans defensive touchdown just pushes him over the line and earns him the award in my book.
POWER RANKINGS :
1. Portland Pythons (2-0) – While this may seem a tad biased, as this is the team I play for, through two weeks the Pythons have only conceded 7 points, scoring 65 in the same time frame, giving them a league best 58 PD.
2. London Royals (2-0) – The reigning champions high flying offense has scored over 30 points in each of their first two games, despite not having the toughest schedule, yet they can only play the teams on their schedule
3. Myrtle Beach Buccaneers (1-1) – A somewhat controversial pick coming in at no. 3, as there is a team below them with a superior record, I felt that the Buccaneers have had the tougher schedule and that they won’t lose many more games this season.
4. Minnesota Grey Ducks (2-0) – You would be forgiven for ranking the Grey Ducks above Myrtle Beach and yet I cannot look past the fact that they have a PD of merely +6 despite playing 2 of the weakest teams in the league. I suppose I might be proved wrong in Week 3 when they play the team ranked third.
5. Kansas City Coyotes (1-1) – The team that are in my opinion, the best of the rest, the sole reason the Coyotes got placed at 5 is the fact they have a win and ranks 6,7 and 8 do not.
6. Dallas Birddogs (0-2) – The Birddogs have the best PD of the bottom 3 teams, at -20, and their offense has been the only one out of these 3 teams who look like they could take their team places
7. Tijuana Luchadores (0-2) – The Luchadores have simply looked not worse than the team who rank dead last
8. Norfolk Seawolves (0-2) – Depressingly, after two games, for fans and for their rookie running back, the Seawolves have only mustered up 7 points, and have looked, to be frank, terrible.
That’s everything I have to say about the games in Week 2, and hopefully I can get a recap of Week 3 out before we see Week 4.
