Coming out of high school Zach Crossley was not a touted prospect for football. Instead he was known as a solid middle distance runner with a specialty for the 800 meters. It was important for Crossley to be able to run track and play football at the next level which narrowed his options for schools. Penn State came knocking with a track scholarship but they made it clear the 5'8 Crossley would be to small to ever play for the Nittany Lions on the gridiron. It wasn't until mid November Crossley was contacted by the University of Tennessee - Martin football coach and track program. Together the programs had agreed to give Crossley a walk-on spot on the football and a full scholarship for the Track and Field Program. Zach jumped at the offer and declared he would become a SkyHawk the Friday after Thanksgiving.
At UTM, Crossley started as just a punt returner and backup slot receiver. Over the course of his four years with the program, he earned his way on to the field more and more. While originally his punt returns earned him recognition (Ohio Valley Conference special teams awards), by the end of his career he was a weapon in the passing game. Known as Mr. 3rd down, Crossley caught over 50 first downs his senior season on his way to leading his team to the playoffs and being named to the all OVC team. Crossley hopes to one day be inducted into the SkyHawk hall of fame.
