Hordle vs the Machine - a DSFL Mock Draft
Hey all, it's Art and Hordle back for another article breaking down the DSFL draft class. Like last year we’re using some maths as a baseline, but unlike last year it is a mock draft! We’re doing 2 full rounds of where DSFL prospects might end up.
The maths behind it is a recommender statistical model. If you’re interested how that works, then check out the methodology section below. If you aren’t, skip down to the draft results. But, either way, here’s a summary of how it’ll work:
Each DSFL team will have 15 prospects recommended to them based on similarity to either their S26 prospect they picked or an S26 prospect who best matches Hordle’s estimates on what position gaps the DSFL team will face. The model and Hordle will choose their pick from the selection.
Some rules:
Norfolk
Dallas
KC
Portland
Minnesota
Bondi Beach
London

Methodology
The article uses a recommender model to provide its best recommendations to each team - essentially a very simplistic version of what Netflix uses to suggest movies for you and what Amazon uses to recommend products. The core of these systems are two different ‘recommender models’ - collaborative-based filtering and content-based filtering. Collaborative filtering (CF) requires that items are shared amongst users and leverages the logic of wisdom of the masses to make recommendations. If Hordle liked A Beautiful Mind and I liked A Beautiful Mind, and Hordle also liked Lion King, then I’ll probably like Lion King. That logic at scale. Unfortunately for us, team’s don’t share players - it’s an exclusive system. So instead of that model, we’ll use content-based filtering.
Content based filtering uses our old friend cosine similarities to make recommendations based on how similar two vectors are to each other. A vector, you’ll remember from the other articles, is a series of feature values - an integer that explains something about the data. Fortunately, we’re well set-up to use content based filtering as we have a natural vector for players - their attributes.
Anyone who read our series last draft will now think - oh so it’s just seeing how similar attributes are, that doesn’t really speak too much about the prospects. And that’s true - initial builds are basically useless to tell anything about who to draft - so I’ve paired down the attributes we consider and added a couple new features: mostly just two low hanging fruit from the awesome TPE tracker CSV download: days since last seen on the forums and TPE applied.
Activity is key to a good draft pick, so days since last seen should weed out some early inactives. Generally speaking waiver creates go higher than non-waiver creates (probably due to being around for a longer period, getting to know more people, and building relationships during the end of the prior season) so TPE applied actually provides a nice reflection of those intangibles: the only DSFL prospects with TPE applied are waiver creates.
To better narrow down positions, I one-hot encoded them as well - meaning there is a feature for Quarterbacks that is either 0 or 1. As well, there is a feature for offense and defense, individually. This was to help the model better distinguish positions - with mixed results as you’ll see.
While a true content-based model would then build matching vectors for each team - the features representing the team’s interest in each field - that’s too much effort for this side project, so I used S26 ISFL picks in their own identical feature arrays. Then, based on Hordle’s research of what positions of need there were for each DSFL team, I either based the recommendation off of the player that team picked last round or a better positional player from the S26 draft.
Using that player as a baseline, the model searches for the best cosine similarities of S27 prospects who match. As a result, we’re given 15 prospects - the model goes with it’s top recommendation and Hordle makes his pick out of the top 15.
Hordle Note: I also just want to point out that I am drafting more towards needs then personality. I know drafting in DSFL can often come down to personality but I haven’t gone through and scouted any of these people. Activity will be mentioned as it’s an important factor.
Estimated positions of need:
Norfolk = DB, DL, LB
Dallas = LB, CB
KC = S, WR, OL
Portland = CB, DT, TE, OL, LB
Minnesota = RB, TE, OL, DT, DE, CB
Bondi Beach = CB, S, LB, WR
London = RB, WR, DL, LB, CB or S
Tijuana = CB, WR, S
Draft Results
ROUND 1
1.1. Norfolk Seawolves - based on S26 player Dogwood Maple
Model’s Selection: Madisan Hayes, WR
Hordle’s Selection: Eleven Kendrick-Watts, WR
No one’s gonna replace Dogwood. I mean it’s impossible to follow up the act and it's illogical to try. But that doesn’t mean that his replacement can’t be good or a good fit to the team. Not only that but there is a chance that Raphael Delacour will be called up this season after being drafted. The top two picks are wide receivers. Followed by a running back and then a safety. And looking at their roster it’s pretty clear that they might need one. They currently have two other safeties in Brian Nelson (Who hasn’t been on in a bit) and Xmus Flaxon Jaxon-Waxon. Who seems active and has been drafted to the Sabercats. So let’s look at the possibilities for a second. Dogwood falls to later in the first, there is no way he doesn’t go in the first, and lands on a team that doesn’t need him just yet. Jaxon-Waxon is called up but they have Dogwood to fill the need. So they can push the safety need back another season.
Raphael Delacour gets drafted midway through the first and is an instant call up. Leaving Norfolk with one less WR and only one that seems to be super active. In this scenario it would make sense for Norfolk to go WR and pick up either Hayes or Kendrick-Watts. I personally feel that Kendrick-Watts is the better pick up because I don’t see Emi Rune as the type of QB to throw bombs eighty yards down the field for a speed receiver like Hayes. Thus I think Kendrick-Watts and Rune would work well together in some slant style plays and well as working towards Kendrick-Watt’s area of expertise in the Red zone.
I feel like this combination will lead to more success for Norfolk in the coming season as they try to recover from the call up massacre that was thrown on them last season.
1.2 - Dallas Birddogs - Based on S26 Player: Leonard Taylor (drafted #4 in S26 by Bondi Beach)
Model’s Selection: Fergus Callaghan Jr., DT
Hordle’s Selection: Fergus Callaghan Jr., DT
I’d agree with the system on this one. Dallas had a rough time against the run last season. Giving up 607 yards in the first three games. Fergus is a run stuffer archetype and should help Dallas close the gap in the middle of the field. While the DT probably won’t offer much in the way of challenging and pressuring the quarterback. He should help to take pressure off of the LB’s and DE’s allowing them to rush more.
I’ve also seen H0PPY75 around a decent bit and am pretty sure that the player will be active. So he should be a good fit for the Dallas Locker Room.
1.3 - Kansas City Coyotes - Based on S26 Player: Derek Wildstar
Model’s Selection: James Wilkinson, TE
Hordle’s Selection: Jim the Vampire, S
I don’t think KCC needs a TE. Granted a lot of KCC’s losses were close and the TE could be another target for their QB which might help push them over the edge. But if Wildstar goes up this season they have no safety net (Get it?) to fall into. Jim’s a recreate so activity’s not a question. Looking to be a shutdown center fielder safety. I think this is the SAFER pick to go with. Maybe people will disagree that the first round isn’t where you want to be safe. But I like the idea of going with Safety again.
Drafting a safety back to back years may not be ideal. But maybe KCC should just be worse at developing safeties. Wildstar and Jim share the same archetype. Meaning you’ll see a lot of the same stuff. Wildstar had a good year so there’s no reason and experienced user like Inverted can’t do the same or better.
Granted my pick hinges on Wildstar going up and of course KCC always could get a bot. I think. I'm not actually sure and should check the rulebook. But either way I feel like Jim is the better pick over a TE.
1.4 - Portland Pythons - Based on S26 Player: Cobra Kai (drafted #3 in S26 by Dallas)
Model’s Selection: Massimo Rocco, RB
Hordle’s Selection: Candice D. Fitinyomouf. DT
Portland is not taking a RB here. They don’t need to. Anders is most likely staying down this next season and will be their RB1. If they were going to take an RB it’ll be second or third round tops. So now that we got that out of the way. We can talk about why I selected Candice.
First off, I think Portland's big needs are gonna be on the defensive side. Chuck Roth is 99% going up to the ISFL this next season to play with the Outlaws. That leaves a huge gap in leadership as well as a huge gap in the line. Portland is going to need someone to fill that. They have a DT in Angelo Cerilli. But they haven’t been active in nearly a month. So you bring in Candice. They’re active. Hit the cap and boom. Problem solved.
I would have gone safety here but Jim would have been my choice and I’ve already taken him off the board. TE wouldn’t have been a bad choice either. But with Roth missing I put DT at the higher need.
1.5 - Minnesota Grey Ducks - Based on S26 Player: Mr. Forty-Two (drafted #15 in S26 by London)
Model’s Selection: Tahj Glover, RB
Hordle’s Selection: Massimo Rocco, RB
Rotchburns won’t spend another season in the DSFL. At least I don’t think he will. And because of this I believe that Minny should and will take a RB here. A lot of the games last season were won on the ground. They’ve already got a QB who they’re gonna stick with. So this is obviously the next important position. (This is also assuming that the majority of Minnesota’s defence stays down.)
Now here’s where it gets fun. As you can see by my last entry with the Pythons. I don’t think they’re going to go RB. I don’t think it’s their biggest need and thus I think that will open up Massimo Rocco. Who for one is a cool dude. I got the chance to talk to him when he signed up and he seems chill. That’s already a big plus. Two he’s active. Massimo has been on as of the day of writing this. Tahj has not. As of writing this I don’t think Tahj will go in the first round. Unless we see a spark of activity. But the DSFL draft should already be happening as of writing this on 11/19/20.
I believe that Rocco is the best RB in the draft. I think even though he’s a speed back he can fill in Rotchburns place. With some slight playbook adjustments, Rocco could be a workhorse for that offense. If you look back to mine and Art’s project together last season. I believe that Rocco and Rotchburns would have matched up. So yeah, assuming that Rocco doesn’t fall off the board earlier. Then I would pick him here.
1.6 - Bondi Beach Buccaneers - Based on S26 Player: Slurms Mckenzie (drafted #10 in S26 by Dallas)
Model’s Selection: Kita Chiasa, CB
Hordle’s Selection: Joliet Christ JR., QB
Daytona is and has been a great player for the BBB’s. I am assuming he goes up next season. If I’m wrong then this whole pick is just blown out of the water. But regardless, I can see BBB going QB here over CB. With currently five QB prospects, four of which seem to be newer creates. I’m banking on the Bucs wanting to grab another experienced player. Taking Joliet allows them to have that experience in one of the biggest spots on the team.
Joliet is a pocket passer and standing behind the wall led by Richard Littlewood. (Assuming he doesn’t get called up.) I am sure that Joliet will be able to succeed. But that’s all I really have for this pick. I would be surprised if Daytona didn’t go up this season.
1.7 - London Royals - Based on S26 Player: Arthur Naught (picked #13 in S26 by Kansas City)
Model’s Selection: Tsuyu Asui, WR
Hordle’s Selection: HeHateMe PickSix II, CB
This is a little back and forth. London could use a WR3 or a running back. But I believe that they’re in need of defensive help as well. Thus the pick of a CB and a Recreate was chosen. Experience is there and DB help. I feel like the defensive needs are more important than lining up a backup RB or a third WR here.
1.8 - Tijuana Luchadores - Based on S26 Player: Tugg Speedman (drafted #16 by London in S26)
Model’s Selection: Eleven Kendrick-Watts, WR
Hordle’s Selection: Tsuyu Asui, WR
Honestly I would take Hayes here. But he’s not in my options. Asui is the next best WR that will be going off the board here. Tijuana isn’t exactly hurting for much and I don’t see many call ups here. Of course I could be very wrong. Maybe Vincent Jones? But regardless. Kemorian Moore isn’t active and Julian Jurevicius is questionable if he’ll fit into that WR2 spot. Asui has been active and I could see them being a good fit into the Luchador playstyle. And so I think Tsuyu is the better pick up here then say the tight end or running back after her.
ROUND 2
2.1. Norfolk Seawolves - Based on S26 Player: Earnest Lover (taken #8 by London in S26)
Model’s Selection: SparkySparky Boom-man, S
Hordle’s Selection: Jack Offmen, S
Jack Offmen is the same Archetype as Dogwood. He can likely fill the same role. To me Norfolk didn’t really seem to struggle against the run. Which is why I believe that having another all arounder will be better than having a run stopping specialist. You can’t replace based on personality here. That’s not gonna be fair to any safeties coming in.
Now some of you might be saying, since Hayes wasn’t taken in the first. (Thanks math) that you should take him here. Well I disagree. The entire reason I let Hayes pass up as 1oa is because I don’t think him and Emi Rune will gel as much. Hayes deserves someone who’s gonna throw a deep bomb down the field. And I don’t think Rune fits into that role.
2.2 - Dallas Birddogs - Based on S26 Player: Bam Bam McMullet (taken #6 in S26)
Model’s Selection: Kevin Morrison, LB
Hordle’s Selection: Carter Fox, DE
This pick is a mix up for me. One hand Slammu the Dallas LB. Could very well be called up to play in the ISFL season. That would leave a gap in LB for Dallas. However they have Erik Kirkland play at that spot as well. On the other hand they had to run a bot for their second DE spot.
So both of these are going to be need’s. I think Dallas takes the risk here and see if Kevin or one of the other LB prospects fall to the third. Unless they decide to make a trade. But I don’t have that power.
First Carter goes to App St. Great school, great area. Probably one of the best things about North Carolina is that Apps. A Balanced DE will add a bit more depth as well as being able to help the Pope out on the other side. I just feel like Carter is a better fit. That’s why I went with him. Totally not a homer opinion.
2.3 - Kansas City Coyotes - Based on S26 Player: Quavious McGrady (drafted #23 in S26)
Model’s Selection: Mike Hunt, WR
Hordle’s Selection: Mke Hunt, WR
Not much to say here. When Art goes up, KCC will need to try and replace him. (Good luck to anyone filling those shoes) Mike Hunt is the best WR fit for them. While Art was a route runner and Mike is a Red Zone Threat. I think this is the best option for the team here.
2.4 - Portland Pythons - Based on S26 Player: Redbeard McFreadbeard (#20 in S26 by Kansas City)
Model’s Selection: Marlon Brando, DT
Hordle’s Selection: Duke Cheeks, LB
I’ve already gone with a DT for the Pythons. I don’t see them drafting a second one. This list Doesn’t have a CB for me to pick from. So I’ll go with the next best thing in a LB. The LB class is rather thin this season. And even though Duke is a speed rusher, he’s my best pick for this area.
2.5 - Minnesota Grey Ducks - Based on S26 Player: Alexander Franklin (drafted #9 in S26)
Model’s Selection: Shane Benjamin, OL
Hordle’s Selection: Maui Waialiki, OL
Talk about having to fill some shoes here. No bias.
I like Shane but I think Maui is a better team fit then Shane is. Offensive line class is rather thin here. Both Shane and Maui are running the more meta build with Athletic and max weight. Hopefully we’ll see that change in the next sim. But either way, I think OL is the way to go here as Minny will most likely have a hole to fill if/when Alexander Franklin leaves.
2.6 - Bondi Beach Buccaneers - Based on S26 Player: Evan Jones (#29 by Portland in S26)
Model’s Selection: Jim the Vampire, S
Hordle’s Selection: Lorenzo Smith II, S
I don’t disagree with this pick. But Jim is off my board. So we go with the second listed safety here. Sparky would also be a good pick here. But I don’t think that the Bucs need a safety with a run support focus. I think Lorenzo will aid in shutting down the air offense of their opponents.
I think with the addition of Lorenzo and assuming the Bucs don’t lose anyone to call ups. They could have a pretty shutdown defense next season.
2.7 - London Royals - Based on S26 Player: Moe Skeeter (drafted #22 by Portland in S26)
Model’s Selection: Xander Creed, RB
Hordle’s Selection: Xander Creed, RB
I believe that London needs an RB this season. But taking one in the first just didn’t sit right with me. So here we agree with the bot and take Xander Creed. They’ve got a bot playing there now. I’m sure they don’t want to pay a bot to play there again. Creed is a speed back like the bot London used last season.
So it’s pretty obvious that’s what they’re looking for. Creed did get a bit of experience within the DSFL last season playing as a waiver pick up for the Ducks. Maybe that will push him to be better than the rest.
2.8 - Tijuana Luchadores - Based on S26 Player: Jalen Washington (drafted #25 by Minnesota in S26)
Model’s Selection: Drip Dad, RB
Hordle’s Selection: Buck Nekkid, RB
The last two picks are running backs and I agree with the bot here. However I think Buck Nekkid will go to the Luchas rather than dad. Luchas are also using a bot as an RB. Buck and the bot are Speed Backs. So that might be in Luchas game plan to run one. Thus I feel this is a better fit… Sorry Dad.
RESULTS
From the model:
1.1. Madison Hayes, WR
1.2. Fergus Callaghan Jr., DT
1.3. James Wilkinson, TE
1.4. Massimo Rocco, RB
1.5. Tahj Glover, RB
1.6. Kita Chiasa, CB
1.7. Tsuyu Asui, WR
1.8. Eleven Kendrick-Watts, WR
2.1. SparkySparky Boom-man, S
2.2. Kevin Morrison, LB
2.3. Mike Hunt, WR
2.4. Marlon Brando, DT
2.5. Shane Benjamin, OL
2.6. Jim the Vampire, S
2.7. Xander Creed, RB
2.8. Drip Dad, RB
Art - the model did a pretty uneven job in its selections. A lot of the same names as Hordle’s, but I think it's a questionable order. Needless to say we’re a fair bit away from any practical input from a recommender model on the draft. Still a fun exercise to do - and I do think it better highlighted some great S27 prospects. A better job by the model on understanding positional needs for the teams would help avoid some of the more painful selections. I do like Hordle’s, despite the limitations he had with the recommendations. Best of luck to all the S27 rookies going to the DSFL in next week’s draft!
From Hordle:
1.1. Eleven Kendrick-Watts, WR
1.2. Fergus Callaghan Jr., DT
1.3. Jim the Vampire, S
1.4. Candice D. Fitinyomouf. DT
1.5. Massimo Rocco, RB
1.6. Joliet Christ JR., QB
1.7. HeHateMe PickSix II, CB
1.8. Tsuyu Asui, WR
2.1. Jack Offmen, S
2.2. Carter Fox, DE
2.3. Mke Hunt, WR
2.4. Duke Cheeks, LB
2.5. Maui Waialiki, OL
2.6. Lorenzo Smith II, S
2.7. Xander Creed, RB
2.8. Buck Nekkid, RB
Hordle: Hayes should have been higher. I would have taken him in the first round if I had the option. Regardless this was a lot of fun to do. And might look good on a potential GM resume in the future if any of my picks land where they say they are going. I definitely think that a lot of the prospects that were targeted by the bot are great prospects. So like Art said it’s great to highlight just wouldn’t follow it 100%. My biggest issue with the bot is just repeat suggestions. I don’t think the Lucha’s are gonna take two WR in the first round. The fact that it gave me the choice of Hayes as the end instead of earlier is a bit annoying. But it’s not that big of a deal.

Some rules:

Not much to say here. When Art goes up, KCC will need to try and replace him. (Good luck to anyone filling those shoes) Mike Hunt is the best WR fit for them. While Art was a route runner and Mike is a Red Zone Threat. I think this is the best option for the team here.
