The Developmental Simulation Football League’s 26th season is upon us. As a rookie myself, I’ve decided to do a little write up about my fellow draftees- specifically those who share my position. Running Backs are some of the most important parts of the offensive team in Football. These speedsters can truck and juke their way to the end zone, all while being some of the flashiest and most well-known personalities on the field at the end of the day. There’s a lot to becoming a running back, and there’s also a lot to being a rookie.
In the DSFL Entry Draft this year, there were a total of six running backs selected. In this article, I’ll be going over the top 3 running backs’ preseason performance and trying to predict the outlook of each running back’s season.
Albeit, since I am a rookie and don’t know anything, my predictions will most likely be terrible. But everybody makes mistakes. And, everybody has those days. Everybody knows what I’m talking about, right? Everybody gets that way. (This paragraph was sponsored by Hannah Montana).
But anyways, let’s get into the meat and potatoes of this article and see how each rookie running back has done in this preseason.
#11- Coyotes- Xander Creed (Bandit239)
The preseason of the Kansas City Coyotes didn’t do so well, as they went 1-3 with their only win being a low-scoring 9-6 game against the Luchadores. But in that game, young Xander was utilized to his fullest extent, rushing for a total of 116 yards and making 24 attempts. Unfortunately, none of these attempts were converted to touchdowns, as the Coyotes won via field goals exclusively. In addition to this, Creed also had 2 kick returns and ran for a total of 64 yards.
In the second game of the preseason, the Coyotes got bit by the venom of the dangerous Portland Pythons (no bias here). In a crushing 33-9 loss, Creed had a total of 62 yards on 17 attempts, making the best of a bad situation. While Creed didn’t get the ball as much in his second preseason appearance as a Running Back, he did get 6 kick returns for a total of 66 yards. Not a bad game for Creed.
The third game saw Creed, once again, get 24 attempts. He rushed for a total of 92 yards, and finally scored his first career touchdown! With a 6 yard rush at 9:08 in the first quarter, Creed scored the Coyotes’ sole touchdown that game, as Kansas City lost to the London Royals 28-7. A solid game for Creed, and a touchdown to beat.
The final game of the Coyotes’ preseason saw a pretty close game between the Norfolk SeaWolves and the Coyotes themselves. Once again, Creed was the biggest facet of the Coyotes’ rushing game, getting 30 touches with a total of 118 yards. While none of these rushes were converted to TDs, it was still a good way for Creed to make his mark on the rest of the league. Creed is clearly the biggest part of the Coyotes’ rushing strategy at this point, and he will no doubt be their starter in the regular season.
#12- Luchadores- Drip Dad (CommishDrip)
The Luchadores had a very similar preseason to the Coyotes, going 1-3 in their four games. It seems like they also have very similar strategies for their running backs, as both Drip Dad and Xander Creed have gotten a ton of action in the preseason. In this game, Drip Dad had 17 attempts, rushed for a total of 91 yards, and had an average of 5.4 yards per rush. Not bad stats in this game, but the Luchadores could not pull out the dub. Drip Dad will have to wait until game 3 for that to happen.
In game 2, the Luchadores were once again handed the 12th letter of the English alphabet. And very similarly, it was a rout. The Grey Ducks crushed the Luchadores, winning 37-7. However, Drip Dad scored the sole touchdown for the Luchadores in this game, no doubt a morale booster. Drip Dad got a considerably low amount of touches this game, only getting 10 attempts and 33 yards. A bit of a surreal game for Father Drip, but there’s no reason not to be dissatisfied with a touchdown.
The third (and final) game of the Luchas’ preseason resulted in their sole win, a 24-17 close game against the Bondi Beach Buccaneers. This was Drip Dad’s best game by far, as on 15 attempts, he ran 71 yards and also rushed for a 13-yard touchdown in the third quarter. This stat line was good enough for Drip Dad to earn player of the game to cap off the preseason, and he had a damn good preseason too!
It seems like Tijuana is trying to utilize Drip Dad as their first string running back, similarly to how Xander Creed is going full force as the starting running back for the Kansas City Coyotes. Can Drip Dad potentially win OROTY? Maybe. I don’t really know, to be honest.
#33- SeaWolves- Ace Savage (Guunar)
Picked 33rd overal by the Norfolk SeaWolves was Ace Savage. Let’s see how he did in his four preseason games.
In game 1, Ace Savage did not get a high amount of touches, as you would expect from a mid-round pick. Savage only got 2 touches in this game, gaining a single yard out of those two attempts. Not a great stat line to start off the preseason, but, as I said before, I don’t think anybody expected him to get a large amount of time on the field.
In Game 2, Savage didn’t even play. The rushing duties were split between SeaWolves running backs Forty-Two and Rune (I don’t know their first names, sorry. Again, complete newbie to the sim here). While I was hopeful Savage would get more on-field time in this game, it seems like that wasn’t the case. Maybe in Game 3?
Well, Game 3 seems to be the medium between the first two games. Savage got just 1 touch in this game, rushing for a total of 1 yard. No earth-shattering stats here.
In the fourth and final game of the preseason, Ace Savage was able to run for 7 yards on just 1 attempt. That’s great! However, as I said before, that was his sole touch of the game. I predict that throughout the season, Ace Savage will not see much action, ultimately coming into his own as he progresses through his first season of play. Maybe we will see more of Ace Savage in his second DSFL season!
Well, that’s about it for me. While I wanted to do all 5 running backs that were selected in this year’s draft, time constraints just didn’t allow me to do so. Thank you for reading.
