LINEBACKERS
What’s new for Linebackers in DDSPF21?
AN OLD WOODEN SHIP USED DURING THE CIVIL WAR ERA – DIVERSITY!!
If you’ve been keeping up on the changes announced so far, it should be no surprise that the Transfer Team has spent many hours trying to make sure that the different archetypes have their own feel and flair to them. With Linebackers we feel we’ve been able to accomplish that to a strong degree, meaning that no longer will you see the fastest players doing everything on the field. Instead, teams will have to pay attention to the builds of the players on their roster and make sure to put them in the best spot to succeed.
TACKLE ANALYSIS CHART!!
One thing I think we can all agree on is that the end of game box scores don’t really tell the whole story, especially when it comes to Linebackers. Sure, you may have had 11 tackles in one game, but was it because you gave up lots of pass completions and you were the nearest defender, or were you making plays near the line of scrimmage and holding the opposing offense to punts? Thanks to the new Analysis Chart, you can actually see not only what sort of an impact your player is making on the field, but where they’re doing it, too!
What’s going on with my archetype?
If there is one glaring issue brought on from the limitations of DDSFP16, it’s that different archetypes within the same position don’t feel meaningfully different. Thanks to the improved sim logic and the new Trait system, we have been able to create diverse Linebackers that fill different roles better than before. To that end, we have collapsed some old Linebacker archetypes, and are introducing three for players to choose from. Each of these performs differently than others, so there will be some interesting choices for teams to make when it comes to creating their strategies and building their teams!
PASS RUSHER
With teams becoming more and more reliant on a strong passing game, defenses have come to accept that their best weapon is a strong pass rush. The Pass Rusher LB is a player built for a single purpose – getting to the quarterback. They boast a combination of athleticism and strength that lets them either get around larger blockers or run through smaller ones on their way to the backfield.
COVERAGE LINEBACKER
As much as it pains Rex Ryan to admit, sometimes you can’t win just by blitzing the Quarterback non-stop. For those moments, teams will hope that they have a Coverage Linebacker. These players are quick enough to keep up with pass-catching Running Backs coming out of the backfield, as well as strong enough to match up with Tight Ends running routes downfield.
RUN STOPPER
The Run Stopper Linebacker conjures up memories of days when men were men and you could go get a donut and cigarette sandwich with extra lard on it at your local diner. These players were made for one thing and one thing only – to knock the snot out of opposing running backs who dare try to carry the ball near them. While not as athletic as the other Linebacker types out there, the Run Stopper relies on their great instincts to be in the right place to make a stop, their strength to shove pesky blockers out of their way, and their sure tackling to stop any ballcarrier in their tracks.
What are these Traits I keep hearing about?
New to DDSPF21 is the idea of Traits. As your player progresses and increases in ability, you will eventually unlock the opportunity to apply Traits to them. These will have real impacts on how your player performs. For Linebackers the available traits are:
SPEED RUSHER
Players with the Speed Rusher trait will, as you can probably guess, be better at rushing the passer. This trait gives your player a slight speed boost while blitzing, and also gives them an easier time breaking through blocks.
PERCEPTIVE
Some people just have an uncanny ability to be at the right place at the right time. Players with the Perceptive trait share in this quality. This trait gives your player a slight increase in your chance to get an interception, and also makes it easier for them to quickly recognize the ballcarrier on any play. No more getting faked out by play action passes!
COMPETITOR
How often have you seen towards the end of a game players missing on tackles that they would have made at the start? With the Competitor trait, your player will play just as strong at the end of the game as they were when it started. This trait also makes your player slightly better at defending passes.
ATHLETE
Makes your player more athletic, and for defenders specifically it adds a slight speed boost while blitzing.
ROLE MODEL
Role Model is the same for everyone – it makes your player less likely to commit penalties.
ISFL-MAS DOUBLE FEATURE??!!
That’s right kiddies! I’m feeling extra festive today (I swear it’s not the half gallon of eggnog I just consumed!) so I wanted to tell you all about something new in DDSPF21.
NEW ATTRIBUTE ALERT!!!
COMPETITIVENESS
That’s right! Moving forward into Season 27, you will notice that your player has one more attribute to keep tabs on – Competitiveness. Competitiveness is an attribute that has many different impacts on the game in subtle ways. Competitiveness:
• helps players recover fumbles more successfully
• makes receivers slightly more likely the catch a ball thrown in their direction
• allows defenders to make more tackles without losing energy
• helps Quarterbacks complete more passes
• gets compared between the ballcarrier and tackler on each successful tackle. If the defender’s has a higher Competitiveness stat (even by 1 point!) they are slightly more likely to force a fumble.
Competitiveness will be yet another way to users to differentiate their players from one another. Are you a strong tackler who stops the ballcarrier, but not much else? Are you an athletic freak who doesn’t have the most technical skill, but has a knack for making the big play that can shift momentum? Competitiveness can help set your player apart!
HOLD UP!! A THIRD REVEAL!?!?
Have you been thinking to yourself, “man, this new sim info is cool and all, but I wish they’d tell us more each day”? Then it looks like today is your lucky day! Not only are we going to tell you about changes to a position and about a new attribute, but we’re going to even give you a sneak peek into how Defensive Schemes will be changing!
When setting up your team’s defensive game plan from week to week, the only real decision seems to be, “well do we want to run 3-4 50 or Nickel 35?” Coming in Season 27, you will no longer be picking specific formations to run on each down – instead you will be picking from either a 4-3 or a 3-4 scheme. The 4-3 scheme contains a combination of plays from both 4-3 and Nickel formations and is perfect for a team with a strong defensive line. The 3-4 scheme contains plays from both the 3-4 and 3-3-5 formations and is meant for teams that have the ability to field multiple linebackers. This change makes it so every team needs to be a little more strategic when it comes to building out their roster and deciding where on the depth chart to put their players.
Along with the changing of defensive formations and play calling, teams will have to not only consider down and distance when deciding to dial up a blitz, but also how their personnel is put together, as well as the general game plan of their opponent. Blitz at the wrong times and a good Quarterback will find the open man and march down the field on you. However, if your team is built for heavy pass rush you might be able to neutralize their ability to get throw downfield.
That’s it for Day Four of the Eleven Days of Sim Migration! You got not one, not two, but THREE pieces of information today! Check back tomorrow for more!
