Philadelphia Wide Receiver Fox North saved a life on his way to the first home game for the Philadelphia Liberty today, catching a baby dropped from a 6th story apartment window as the building burned. Fire trucks were stuck in Philly’s notorious traffic, ironically made much worse that day by the influx of visitors to Taco Bell stadium for the Liberty’s first home game against the Baltimore Hawks. We have the details right here!
“I just happened to be in the right place at the right time,” said Fox North, giving a quick interview to media outside Taco Bell Stadium later that day prior to the game; “Paul and I were grabbing a quick bite to eat around the corner before heading here on the subway. We’d managed to finish about half our burgers when someone ran past yelling ‘Fire’ and we ran out to take a look. The street was packed with traffic, which just moments ago I was very pleased with it being our first home game, but I knew was bad news for emergency response. We got up next to the building where mostly just residents had gathered and could hear a woman screaming – I looked up and there she was, smoke pouring from all the windows except the room she was in. She reaches inside and pulls out this baby, looks me dead in the eyes and flings him right at me. Well, instinct takes over and I pull him in perfect – hell, her accuracy could give Jameis a run for his money. We look back up and the lady gave me a thumbs up and then disappeared back inside – I was told later that she made it as well, the fire department having arrived with a ladder truck a couple minutes later. Anyway, I handed the kid off to one of her neighbors along with one of the new Fox stuffed animal keychains with my jersey on it to keep him company and Paul and I hauled for the subway to make it here on time. I’m glad we were able to help!”
We caught up with the mother, Jessica Sanders, who gave the following account. “Yeah, the fire was pretty bad, and before the alarm went off it had already spread to the hallway outside my apartment, so we couldn’t get out that way. I stuffed some wet towels under the door and hoped for the best, but it was getting real hot in there and just a bit smoky, so I thought I should get little James out if I could before I passed out from smoke inhalation…opened up the window, and I noticed these two athletic looking guys arriving and thought ‘Wow, that’s Fox North and Paul DiMirio!’ With no fire trucks in sight, I locked eyes with Fox and put a pretty nice spiral on James if I do say so myself – made sure to throw towards Fox’s side – no offense to Paul, but you wanna go with the sure thing when your kid’s life is at stake, you know? Anyway, he pulled him in like it was the most natural thing in the world and I knew I made the right choice. I gave him a thumbs up and went back inside to stuff more wet towels under the door, and a couple minutes later the fire department arrived and got me out the window. My neighbor Dan handed me James and a cute little stuffed fox – I’m a Liberty fan for life now. I’ll have to get the little fox signed at a game sometime for James. Fox North, if you see this, thanks! Stick it to the Hawks for us!”
There you have it folks, just another brick in the legend building around Fox North. This kid sure is going places! Let’s hope he can help lead the Liberty to a win here at home in just another couple minutes. Stay tuned!
