It pains me to have to write this. I've been a loyal 'Farers fan ever since they first made their home here. Season tickets every year, tons of merch, the whole 9 yards, but I don't think I can take it anymore. I'm tired of the coaching woes that plague this team every god damn year. We've got some real talent on the team this year, so, I believed, like I do every year for whatever stupid god forsaken reason. I had reviewed the college tapes of many of these players, and they were seemingly very intelligent players in their college careers, which leads me to believe that they're being coached this way.
What am I talking about? Let's go to the film room.
Let's go to week 1 against Chernobyl. Juno Hu just gave up a 63 yard deep pass on an out-and-up double move, but was able to bring down the receiver at the goal line. Eh, it happens. Next play, #58, Guitar Master, doesn't realize he's part of the play's personnel grouping until the offense is already lined up, starts running onto the field way too god damn late and fails to get behind the line of scrimmage before the ball is snapped. This basic lack of discipline has been evident all season long so far, but let's forget all that for a second.
Here we can see what lies at the very heart of our problems on defense. Our DBs are lined up 8 yards into the endzone...when the ball's on the 1 yard line?? I mean, are you kidding me? My legitimated retarded baby niece wouldn't do this. And honestly the players carry a huge part of the blame, too! Why did no one call a time out? You guys saving them for the next game or somethin'? You look and see only 3 down linemen on the god damn goal line, call a god damn time out and fix your s***! Football's already a hard enough game to win when you do everything right. It's straight up impossible if you're beating yourself before the ball's even snapped.
Oh, what's that I hear you saying? It's a fluke, a brainfart, perhaps just the early woes of learning a new defense? Let's go to week 2 against Auckland.
The above is what followed a 37 yard run by Auckland's RB Archie Griffin, bringing the Laser Kiwis inside the 5. What do we do this time? We remain in our Nickel package. Our DBs are, again, lined up 8 yards deep in the endzone against what looks to be a run-heavy formation. Again, all I can ask is why? Why is being in the nickel on the god damn goal line an option for this team?? But even if you truly believe that isn't the wrong personnel grouping to use, why are you not pressed up, and instead insisting on the DBs starting the play 10 yards away, and having them come downhill? At least give yourself a chance!
Still a fluke, or an intentional sabotage? I have trouble believing these coaches aren't just throwing the god damn game!! How are the players not revolting over this??
Oh, but we won the last 2 of 3 games, you say! Yeah, but that doesn't discredit anything I've presented thus far, does it? And 3 weeks to correct basic alignment and personnel issues that shouldn't have been issues to begin with is not worth praising. Congrats, you finally remembered to put on your socks before your shoes today!
I'm not normally one for conspiracy theories, but it's all just too damn fishy this time around. Surely, something deeper is at work. Did the coaches put money on those first few games or somethin'? This playcalling just doesn't pass the eye test. And don't think our woes have ended just 'cause we won 2 games. They're far from shoring up the issues.
Here we are, week 6 against Auckland again. Rematch. Auckland lines up in shotgun, with a tight end on the offensive right, and the half back to that side. Now, normally when the RB is lined up to the right on shotgun, runs to the offensive right are incredibly unlikely. The formation simply does not allow for efficient angles to the edge, but you still have to respect the option! For f***'s sake, what the hell do we call? A 4-3 over, sliding all our linebackers to the weak side...on a weak overload blitz? What's the logic in this, to bait them into throwing it to #11...who would be in single coverage against a linebacker? #20's positioning is quite awkward, and doesn't allow him to be able to effectively defend against a quick pass to the slot receiver. So, that's not a sound plan, either. So what exactly is Jakarta trying to do?
But before we can answer that question, the ball is snapped, and sure enough, Auckland calls a counter sweep to the offensive right. #85 is placed in perfect position for a crack block against our LDE, sealing the edge for an easy first down and more. #22, Juno Hu, is a god damn cover corner, not a run stopper. You're gonna task him with setting the edge, and to be fair, he does an excellent job forcing the play back inside or this could have gone all the way, especially given this absolutely unreasonable playcalling, but why is his help so far away?
Honestly, even after reviewing the footage, I'm still baffled at what I am seeing and how these coaches are still in the league. They need to go, and some sort of investigation needs to be launched to look into potential matchfixing. There is honestly no other explanation for this combination of playcalling and apparent coaching points. It's unacceptable and the coaching staff need to immediately resign if they want to maintain any semblance of dignity, but it seems we are far past that point.
I ask this as a pure fan of the sport: Is this really the best the coaching talent pool has to offer at this level? Are we forever doomed to witness eye-gouging quality football at this level? My friends tell me all the time, "Hasan, these games are rigged, man! Don't you know? Mafias around the world use them to launder money. That's why they are able to even operate in a country like ours. Think about it! Do you think our ticket sales is really able to sustain such a product?" For so long, I refused to believe it, but things have never been as blatant as these past few weeks.
You know, once upon a time there was a thing called having some god damn respect for your audience, and pride in presenting a good product. Look, I get it. We're Indonesians. We're not the wealthiest of countries. And this league is just used as a showcase for the actual main leagues that dominate the world, the DSFL and ISFL, but that doesn't mean we should be made to eat s*** every god damn year, does it? Have some mercy on us, please! Like damn, at least lie to us a little better. We've done our best to be an accomodating and supportive fanbase, but we are, or at least I am, on our last legs. If this doesn't change soon, then this season'll be my last ride! Farewell to the rest of 'Farer Nation, and may god have mercy on your souls.
