Award and Off season before ISFL debut
So my 3 years comes to an end its been a great ride down in the DSFL. 2 years ago I was drafted in round 6? To the Austin Copperheads, I’ve spent 2 season furthering my development down in the DSFL and now am ready to take the step up. Final season didn’t go quite as I hoped but to have got the Ultimini win my 2nd season was a great achievement.
So with Awards season coming up I felt id have a shot at the Defensive End (DE) of the Year having had a good season with 25 Tackles for Loss (TFL), 10 Sacks and 2 Forced Fumbles (FF). When it came to the ceremony the awards team went through all of my fellow nominees, Laxus Dreyer (Kansas City Coyotes), Chet Larson (Bondi Beach Buccaneers), Pope Francis (Dallas Birddogs) and Bean Beanman (Norfolk Seawolves) and seemed to pass me over, so assumed that meant the award would not be coming my way. So I was surprised and delighted when it was announced to their surprise that I had won the Defensive End of the Year award. I felt proud and honoured to have taken it home, even if we had sadly not had a great team season. I wanted to give a big thanks the the Tijuana Luchadores organisation for helping me get to where I am and delivering me a Ultimini title. Also a Thanks to the Tijuana GM Tonzy who has been a fantastic supporter of mine and helped my development to no end.
So the 3 seasons comes to an end with a record of 20-22, 1 Ultimini Title and a Defensive End of the year award, so not too bad. The particular great run to Ultimini title as large underdogs will forever stay with me.
If I look how I developed over the seasons my output to the team has gone up, in total I have 125 Tackles, 46 TFLs and 16 sacks with 3 FFs and 1 FR. If we look at my stats over the seasons we can see how my contribution to the defensive side of the game has gone up:
Tackle (% of Team) TFL (% of Team) Sacks (% of Team)
S24 4% 16% 2%
S25 5% 45% 13%
S26 9% 48% 32%
So I am officially being called up to the ISFL this season with the Austin Copperheads. Having graduated out of Houston it is good to return to Texas in familiar surroundings where I hope to settle down and make a good impact. I’m coming into a side running a 4-3 defence, there are 2 stud Defensive Ends in the team, and the team was looking for me to move inside the defensive line into a defensive tackle position. I am more than happy to take on this challenge. But I would need top make a few changes to my style and my physique.
This offseason I’m going to need to try and put on more bulk and size. During my time in the DSFL I have weighed between 290 and 305 lbs, but now I’m moving up to the “Big Leagues”, I would need to get my body up to 330lb if I’m going to be a force inside and make sure I deal with the opponent offensive line and running backs. I’m currently on a diet that consists of; 5 kg of steaks, 3 whole chickens, 1 leg of lamb and a head of broccoli, this alongside going to the gym 4 times a day, I should get to my required weight gain by the start of the season. Yes I may lose a bit of speed from where I was but I should be able to get stronger.
Looking into the team I’m joining the Defensive line for the Austin Copperheads last season had 159 tackles, 20 tackles for loss and 19 sacks.
Tackles (% of Team) TFL (% of Team) Sacks (% of Team)
Egghands ©, T. DE 6% 32% 10%
Keiki-Kane, M. DT 5% 0% 10%
Claxton, S. DE 5% 32% 15%
Montain, T. DT 4% 7% 4%
Tackles (% of DL) TFL (% of DL) Sacks (% of DL)
Egghands ©, T. DE 31% 45% 26%
Keiki-Kane, M. DT 26% 0% 26%
Claxton, S. DE 23% 45% 37%
Montain, T. DT 19% 10% 11%
So if we analyse these stats, I am coming into this team as the replacement for Keiki-Kane at DT. They gave a good account of themselves with Tackles and Sacks, but seemed to struggle at stopping the RBs behind the line of scrimmage. This should be something I am able to do, as I was able to give the Tijuana Luchadores good penetration in my last 2 seasons where I was able to get 45 and 48% of the teams TFLs respectively. Hopefully if I can carry this forward inside the line I should be able to help this side shut down the run more effectively this season and force the QBs to throw and give more opportunities to Egghands and Claxton on the Outside.
So with the upcoming ISFL S27 I hope to be able to help push the Copperheads on to better things.
