So I'm slowly getting established on the site, learning how things work, raging against the sim for its RNG bullshit losses, and being an upstanding citizen so that my DSFL GM can feel warm and fuzzy inside about his drafting acumen. But with the season approaching the endgame, nows as good a time as any to take a look forward at next season to the upcoming draft, where I could be a hot commodity for a desperate GM in the show. I've been around the block a few times in the SHL and SBA, but I'm still slowly piecing together the culture of this league, getting familiar with the stars and the candy bars of this league, and learning the game. So let's take a look at the NSFC first, take a look into each team's setup, branding, whether I'd like to be there or not, and whether their drafting needs would include me to begin with.
Overview: An Original Six outfit from the unlikeliest of locations, Yellowknife is 7-3 at press time, in a 3-way tie for first spot in the ISFL. The team is coming off an Ultimus win in Season 27, and I'm inclined to think the team has enough tactical chutzpah to survive into the postseason, but given that Chicago and Sarasota drew more praise in pre-season predictions and some teams are surging in the ASFC, a repeat title is optimistic. Will probably pick around 9th-11th if they don't sell their first rounder.
WR Room: The team is 4 deep at wideout, but Dre Matthews is headed towards the down slope and Arthur Naught might've hit his peak. Kai Sakura and Mark Walker are quality options, and unless either wants out or an upgrade presents itself, they'll be established for a fair few seasons as 1 and 2. No prospects are in the pipeline.
Branding: Great branding, weird location choice. I have relatives IRL who have mined in the Territories, and I have it on full authority that living up there can be shit sometimes. I'm guessing the founder of the team was either trolling or actually from Yellowknife, but hey, you do you I guess. And its an original team so it probably won't ever be moved. I guess Toronto and Montreal would be too orthodox for a Canadian landing spot.
Familiar Faces?: I think Arkz plays for my old SMJHL stomping grounds in Colorado and thats it. A couple Portland teammates are in the pipeline but I'm not sure if they're frequent chatters on our Discord.
Overall: I get the feeling this is a tradition-oriented team with either a good culture or a culture unique unto itself. This team has a tradition of success, although it seems they haven't won a ton of titles due to RNG. This would not be a bad landing spot, but unless those top 2 receivers check out they probably won't be looking for a prospect there if they draft by need. I think they'll go Running Back or Defense with their choice, but playing here is not out of the question for both sides.
Overview: One of a couple suburb-ass looking teams that probably should be in a bigger city, Sarasota is in that 7-3 logjam with the aforementioned Wraiths. Sarasota is a newer team, having shown up in Season 22, and have been fairly competitive every year, although with limited playoff success. A pre-season favourite, they've had a few ups and downs in this campaign, but could be in contention for a conference championship. Could pick at a fairly wide range, like 9th-14th if they don't sell their pick.
WR Room: Michael Witheblock is great, albeit probably on the back half of his career, while Tre'Darius J'Vathon and his apostrophes makes for a good second option. Joseph Radetzky is a recreate prospect in the pipeline that will probably make it as a starting caliber wideout.
Branding: I feel like it's missing something, but then I haven't seen the jerseys. I'm getting lighter toned Seahawks vibes from this branding, and I've never been a huge fan of the Seahawks branding. Also the team should've been the Sarasota Swordfish, or the Not-Sarasota Somethings.
Familiar Faces?: Quite a few. Nykonax and I go back a ways, we came up together in the SMJHL. Naosu almost made a disastrous decision by nearly becoming my co-GM in the SHL, but he struck me as an ambitious guy with promise. Blastmeaway is someone i know but haven't crossed paths with (although I think hes IA anyways). Theres a few faces from Portland I recognize, and being with my DSFL QB in Lebron James III could be good for story purposes.
Overall: Sarasota wouldn't be a bad fit, and I feel like I'd get along with their GM Frostbite quite well based on Frostbite's player name. That being said, Sarasota should be looking to either fortify a strong defense in case people leave, or pick up much needed Offensive Line help in this draft over taking a wideout. Would be a pretty good landing spot I'm guessing, but probably won't happen.
Overview: Included in the first wave of expansion, Philadelphia seems to have been a fairly mediocre franchise over the years, albeit with a high note (Season 7 Ultimus title), and a low note (eating an 0-14 in Season 10). When I look at history I see a lot of single digit win seasons, but a turnaround may be imminent after a few rough seasons. The Philly defense is young, aggressive, and shows signs of promise. If they develop well alongside a potential elite starting Quarterback in Ryan Negs, the Liberty could make some noise soon. Philly is currently 4-6, and should have a pick around those two numbers going into the Season 28 draft.
WR Room: Veteran Flash Panda leads the way, although it remains to be seen if Panda will still be effective towards the end of a long contract with a no-movement clause that has the potential to be a major albatross if things go badly. Killian Chambers is probably near starting caliber and with more development in front of him, and last year they drafted Tsuyu Asui who shows promise.
Branding: Good theme, but honestly I feel something more Chicago-esque and violent would've fit Philly better. Philly needs to create an aura around its teams, theres a reason the 76ers come off like a bunch of busters and only seemed kinda cool during the black branding Allen Iverson days (and theres also a reason why the Eagles went darker green and a sharper looking helmet wing.). You gotta set a tone, and Liberty doesn't do that, although its patriotic and Philly was an important city in the founding of America so whatever.
Familiar Faces?: A few veteran SHL users such as iam, leafs4ever, and Nictox, although we haven't really crossed paths often. I also recognize AgentSmith as an SHL podcaster of note, and possibly a couple other guys too.
Overall: I'm inclined to think the Liberty might be interested in replacing a few older pieces on offense, or getting more secondary help mebbe, or possibly trading and trying to nab a veteran that might put this younger team over the top. Picking me wouldn't be a bad idea for the Liberty, but they've probably got more pressing needs. I'm open to being part of a Philly sim sports team for sure, but their management could have other ideas.
Overview: Another Original Six outfit, Colorado has had to come up the hard way in the ISFL, suffering through two 0-14 teams, with the subsequent rebuild not producing a team good enough to get over the hump. Colorado finally broke through with a shock Ultimus win in Season 22, followed by strong teams that fell short twice against the San Jose SaberCats in Season 24 and 25. With an 8-8 finish in Season 26, and the team behind three very good teams in the NSFC playoff race at 6-4, the Rockies own find themselves at a crossroads, and would have a rather volatile draft position in Season 28 depending on how things play out.
WR Room: Veteran Jeremy Lim is a top-class wideout, although hes entering the back half of his career. Leeroy Jenkins is a good veteran stop-gap option, and Raphael Delacour is a good number 3 with the potential to be something much more.
Branding: Indifferent, no strong feeling one way or another.
Familiar Faces?: SDCore is one, a good guy who I respect. golden_apricot is someone I scouted a bit in Season 50 as SHL GM but didn't pull the trigger on, and maybe with hindsight i could've. bluesfan is a person that exists as well.
Overall: So its gonna depend on how hard Lim and Jenkins intend to fight off regression to determine if WR is a real need for the team. TE and Defensive Line could be options for the Yeti as well. Colorado could also trade for a defensive star to put them over the top. They're possibly a good candidate for a landing spot, depending on how the other WR rooms turn out and just where the hell they end up drafting (I feel like this team making the playoffs could hurt them in the long run, but then the sim could probably reward subtle tanking with random blowout wins so who knows.)
Overview: Part of the Season 16 expansion, Chicago came in hot with a 10-3 season, but couldn't turn it into an Ultimus appearance. The team suffered through a couple wretched years in Season 22 and 23, winning four games and losing over two dozen, but have turned the corner and look primed to be a contending team for the next little while. Assuming Chicago makes the playoffs through this 7-3 logjam, they'll be holding a late pick, and I think they could make their first Ultimus appearance, making it a very late pick.
WR Room: Lot of experience, so certainly some room for fresh faces down the line. "Lucky" Luca Scabbia is good, Joshua Campbell and Sean O'Leary are good supporting cast members, and prospect Mike Hunt is in the pipeline.
Branding: Good, but a little to out there. I get the feeling this team has some fucking sick black and red unis though, or maybe some stainless steel grey ones. Lots of potential in this branding.
Familiar Faces?: Quite a few. enigmatic and SparkyDee are teammates of mine in Winnipeg in the SHL, Evok's said to be a nice lady, although we haven't really crossed paths, and I'm familiar with Faelax ans sve7en through grading a number of their podcasts and articles. Leafer and caltroit are also people I've heard of. TheCC also rings a bell, I think he does rookie stuff and I think hes also leading my fantasy group and stealing my TPE. Curses!
Overall: Depending on how they see their WR room this is a destination to like. I want to be on a successful team, and Chicago's looking pretty good. They could aim to get a replacement in advance for their quarterback, and depending on cap they might need to actually offload their second rounder maybe idk. Still, this is a landing spot I have a good feeling about, even though Chicago's burned me a couple times in in-game predictions already (Thanks for that 0 playoff TPE sim!).
Overview: Part of the Season 25 expansion, Berlin seems to be a team the league have hopes for in their attempt to go international. A 3-13 start was to be expected, but the second season showed progress at 7-9, and Berlin is currently 4-6 and seem to be on the cusp of contention heading intot he next couple years. Their draft position outlook will probably be similar to Philly's.
WR Room: Achtfünf is a solid number 1 WR, Cmon Skiuuup will probably be pretty good, and Susan Cash Jr. a good option too although who knows how much longer she'll stay on a pro roster before hanging it up. Schumi Hulkenvettel has an outside chance of developing into a useful player down the line.
Branding: Look, I respect people with artistic skills, and the art on this branding is fine, but Fire Salamanders is just not a good name, you really needed something that rolls off the tongue better for the ignorant English-speakers in the crowd. Dragons or something medieval might've worked better. Good nationalistic color choice at least, and salamanders are cool, but for this particular branding? Eeeesh.
Familiar Faces?: A few, Symmetrik and Bruins10 are people I've heard of, and I also feel like I know simo from somewhere in the ISFL but can't place it, might be a war room guy with Portland or a rookie mentor? idk. Hank Steel I believe is also my first Twitter follower for some reason.
Overall: I could see Berlin thinking they need a new face for the future if Achtfunf hangs it up earlier than expected. There's some aspects of the team I'm really not feeling, but they do look like they're on the cusp of contention, with some good young defensive pieces and a quality Quarterback, albeit one hitting regression. I don't really know who they'd want to draft, maybe some front seven help? Maybe their future heir apparent to Kaepercolin? This could be a probable Spence landing spot.
Overview: One of the Original Six, Baltimore has had some success over the years, including two Ultimus wins, but a string of playoff misses starting in Season 23 have led to Baltimore hitting a reef and damn near sinking the franchise, with the GMs resigning mid-season to leave temps in charge of steadying the ship, followed by full-time hires in Frick-Nasty and Hallmonitor that proceeded to jettison everyone overboard for whatever resources they could get. With some faces out the door that could help the current on-field production, Baltimore appears set to eat an 0-16 and claim the 1st overall pick, with a raft of 4th rounder and a vision for the future that can hopefully turn things around. I imagine Luke Skywalker is currently in a vacant right now crying his eyes out about being deprived of an MVP trophy for a remarkable campaign he was leading in Honolulu.
WR Room: Mario Messi and Korbin Brown are serviceable options with some future growth ahead of them, although Brown might be aging out of the Baltimore plans a bit.
Branding: Pretty nice actually! I like the gold, and the unis have a good sharp design from the looks of the wiki page. Honestly one of the better branded teams out there.
Familiar Faces?: I know TDZ and tomas and they're pretty alright. I know White Cornerback and Jiggly by reputation but I'm willing to be open-minded, they haven't done anything to me after all so w/e. CLG Rampage is a pretty good username, and I feel like I've heard of overdoo from somewhere. Theres also Thiath who's an alum/war room guy mebbe for Portland and he seems pretty cool.
Overview: Oh boy. So look, I'm not going to jump on the lmao, fuck Baltimore because reasons train, because I'm not gonna pretend to know for a second what went down behind closed doors, or even some of what went down behind open doors. There are some raw feelings in the franchise amongst the alumni, but there is some optimism that this can be fixed, and they have a lot of depth picks to fire with in this draft. The thing is, I really don't want any part of this mess, because in my time in the SHL I nearly drowned my team Winnipeg in an ocean of my own design with a rather disastrous GM tenure, and it made me kinda hate sim sports for a bit, (especially when I later found out that the sim that sold me out down the stretch to make my team miss the playoffs in an all-in push, was also a busted piece of shit that couldn't value fundamental skills properly). So I have sympathy for Baltimore's management staff, but as a player, I want no part of any act that might make me depressed to check Discord and depressed to check the sim and see what kinda bullshit we got shovelled onto us again. I'm sure Baltimore has some nice people and a future vision, but in a perfect world I'm aiming to step into a contender right after a second season in the DSFL, and Baltimore's project is a few seasons away. Besides, although receiver is a need for the team, QB, front seven, and general veteranosity with some locker room culture are probably much more pressing. I do wish Baltimore luck though with...... whatever this is. The parade of people lining up to throw tomatoes at the team can get a little sickening when you think about it, because this isn't like real sports where the assholes runing teams are overpaid and don't give a fuck, this is just users on a forum trying to pave a road to heaven for their team, but end up taking a wrong turn and heading to hell instead, with their road cement being made by the Good Intentions Cement Mixer. Although maybe I'm missing some deep lore in this, who the fuck knows.
