This interviewer is on site with Remus Roman following his impressive performance this week versus the Kansas City Coyotes. In the game, on just SIX CARRIES, Roman eclipsed the DSFL single game rushing record with his astounding 269 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Tell me Remus, how does it feel to stand alone in the record books?
“Honestly Bob, it feels amazing, what feels even better is that my team needed me today and I was able to deliver for them. Sure it was a great individual performance, but what is even better is that we walked away with the win.”
You talked about this being a team effort, did you have anyone in mind when you said that?
“Of course, Bob. First off, I couldn’t have achieved this game without the impeccable play of our offensive line. I swear I saw Stumpy pancake like 7 dudes that game – he was truly on fire. All I had to do was drive that hole he’d make for me and I was gone. I also couldn’t have done it without my boy Gio Bianchi, if he didn’t scare the hell out of those linebackers with his cuts and head down power running, I don’t think I would have been able to outrun em’. Lastly I couldn’t have had this performance without Lebron James III. Lebron has been killing it this year through the air. Those safeties had to drop back every time just to make sure Bron’ didn’t throw it right over them. I had so much space to work with and I think that is just because of our MVP QB.”
The game came down to the wire, though. It ended up much closer than your statline would suggest, why do you think that is?
“Honestly I got pretty lucky out there and I got some huge chunk plays for sure, but that’s a good team we just played. Sure their record isn’t flashy, but I don’t think we’ll be underestimating them any time soon. They have two really solid running backs that I could learn a thing or two from, as well as an up and coming QB that other teams need to start respecting a bit more. Our defense did a great job of holding them back and keeping them from scoring more to be honest. Some really clutch plays on the defensive side that helped us clench that game.”
With a game like that, a lot of analysts have been discussing your prospects for the Rookie of the Year award, what are your thoughts on that?
“One game doesn’t change my standing… at least it shouldn’t. Don’t get me wrong, I would accept it if I was awarded it, but I think Saleem Spence deserves it more than anyone. Man has been stellar this year and we wouldn’t be sitting at the top of the DSFL North standings without him. I’m just glad I was able to help the team win this game, Saleem has been putting us on his back all year.”
The Pythons came in to this season as heavy favorites to appear in the Ultimini Championship this year – how is the team handling the pressure?
“Pressure is a part of the game for all of us, it’s in our blood and we thrive in those big situations. Last year was a huge disappointment for the team and the management, but I think with this slew of new talent in this impressive draft class, we have an even better shot this year. I know there was a lot of heartbreak last year, but I’m confident we can bring the Ultimini back to Portland this year. Our boys, our managers, and our coaches are more ready than ever to deliver that championship again.”
You started the season strong, but in the last few weeks you’ve dropped a few winnable games, care to comment on that?
“Yeah, unfortunately losing is a part of the game too, and we have dropped a few. We are a young squad that has some catching up to do. There is a hell of a lot of talent but we have had a few kinks we need to work out before we get to the playoffs – we need to find “our brand” of ball, something that works for us here in Portland. We have so many people who can pop off at any moment, so many people who can help us win, we just have to find the most consistent and efficient way to do that. Once we work out those kinks, the league better watch out because we won’t ever stop.”
How is it trying to fit in with a “Championship or Bust” team like the Pythons?
“I won’t lie, my first few weeks and in training camp I was nervous. This is a true winning culture with the Pythons, and unless you are willing to give it your all each week they will chew you up and spit you right out. After a while I realized that this is a culture I’m familiar with, it’s one I helped create at Purdue with my brother Romulus – shout out to him and his big W today too – and my brother from another mother Gritt Gurdur. We pushed our guys hard and were dedicated to the game, and together we overcame that hurdle to win the BCS Championship last year. I think that mentality helped me fit in really well here, and right now I feel like Portland is definitely where I belong.”
With the ISFL looming on the horizon, what are your thoughts on your prospects in the big leagues?
“Well first off I just want to cut my teeth in the DSFL. Sure I’ve had a few good games and had some success here, but I don’t think I’ve proved anything until I make it to the big show, until I can play in front of all of those people at the Ultimini Championship game. Once I’ve done that I’ll start worrying about the ISFL.”
Thanks for your time Remus, and congrats again on your big game!
“Thanks Bob, it was great speaking with you, looking forward to chatting again after my next big game!”
