In hindsight, Season 27 was a fantastic one for DSFL rookie cornerback CJ Sonjack. He was drafted to the London Royals in the 3rd round, 22nd overall, and at that time he was more that ecstatic for his landing spot as he that was his preferred destination going into the draft process.
The season started off a bit rocky for Sonjack. He was under the impression that he would be a starting CB for the Royals, but he barely saw a defensive snap and was only brought into the fray when there was a kick to be returned. A frustrated CJ Sonjack burst into the coaching offices after the 2nd preseason game against the Tijuana Luchadores.
“Am I or am I not a cornerback here? Am I not a starting cornerback?”
“You are. We’re not quite sure what happened there, but you will be in that slot next week against the Coyotes.”
“Was there any particular reason you weren’t giving me the opportunity to play?”
“No, we’ll talk to the on-field staff and get it remedied.”
Satisfied with the answer, Sonjack eased back into his role with the Royals and with the Lion Gang community. The coaching staff honored their word, and Sonjack formed one of the better lockdown duos the DSFL saw during the S27 DSFL Season. Willie Miller and CJ Sonjack were ying and yang on the secondary. Willie took a strong, brutish approach to pass defense, and Sonjack brought a smart, fleet of foot answer to the opposing wideouts. @Sebster
CJ Sonjack has punched his ticket in the conversation for many awards. The rookie CB collected some shining statistics from his campaign – in addition to his role as CB, he fielded 22 kick returns. On the defensive side of things, he collected a total of fifty-four tackles, two forced fumbles, a sack and 27 passes defended. Most importantly – he led the league with 7 interceptions, one of which was a pick-six.
With how young Sonjack is it is hard to see him being brought up in the discussion of DSFL Defensive Player of the Year, but he should get some attention regarding the DSFL Positional Awards, Defensive Rookie of the Year, Individual Performance of the Year and Rookie of the Year with his stellar rookie season. In Week 11 against the Pythons, Sonjack collected a trio of picks in the first half of the game, amassing 75 total interception return yards. That feat was not matched in the league.
Unfortunately, despite a successful season, the Royals fell short of punching their ticket to the postseason. Sad lion noises. So, which the league enjoyed a highly entertaining series of playoff games, Sonjack was already working hard in the gym and communicating with scouts from ISFL teams. He has had productive discussions with Honolulu, Berlin, Colorado, Austin and Sarasota. His attention shifts to making the best impression he can of what he can bring to his new club, while working hard in the weight room to try to improve upon his rookie campaign in the DSFL.
One thing is for sure - Sonjack can't wait to return to London to keep grinding and carve out a Hall of Fame legacy in the ISFL when the time finally arrives.
On a meta note - my time in London so far has been an absolute treat. Management are gems, leadership are gems, each and every member of that locker room are gems. My experience there has really increased my interest in the league and that's a testament to the work that the Royals have put into the league. A round of applause! @katarn22 @slate
