Earlier on Monday, our sources had informed us that Arizona Outlaws player Godfrey King, would be the primary Defensive Tackle against the run. Up to this point, King has mostly been sitting on the bench in games, filling in of course where he was needed. This marks a huge step up in King's young career, as he should be able to see significantly more snaps, helping to prove himself out on the gridiron.
When asked about his promotion before the game, King had this to say:
"When coach told me I was getting a promotion, if that's what you want to call it [chuckles], I have to say, I was beyond ecstatic. To start with, I'm so lucky to have even had the opportunity to forego my final year of college in order to get a year of experience in the NSFL...to be trusted with stopping the run when I'm so young, I mean I'm at a loss for words, it means so much to me. I hope I prove that coach made the right decision when we match up against Yellowknife tonight, but really I'm just happy to be getting more snaps and then more time out on the field to prove what I can do to help out the team."
In the locker room, King was surrounded by an intoxicating air of excitement. Seeing the big grin on his face, it was hard to not smile right along with him. As opposed to pumping himself up by sitting in silence, as many players do, King opted to talk and laugh with his teammates, his naturally happy and carefree personality showing itself in spades. When it became time to run out on the field, Godfrey banged on his chest a few times (King Kong Style) and hustled out.
It was the second quarter, and a stellar performance on both sides of the field for the Outlaws was clearly wearing on the morale of the Yellowknife players. Time was dwindling down as the Wraiths tried to put together one last offensive stretch before the clock ran out and it became half time. Star running back Bubba Nuck just had a first snap run for 11 yards, keeping the Arizona defense guessing on what they should be looking for. The Wraiths called a timeout, then marched back on the field to try and get the ball towards the end zone. Coming out of their huddle, Yellowknife formed up for a pass attempt. The ball was snapped and Orosz scanned the field for an open receiver--of which he found none. Before Orosz could make the frantic decision to heave the ball in the air or try to run with it...SLAM...he gets absolutely pummeled by none other than Godfrey King. King quickly got up and ran to his teammates, who congratulated him on the stellar defensive play. Apparently demoralized, Yellowknife then failed to make anything of the possession.
Asked about the feeling of his first career NSFL sack, King was ecstatic:
"That feeling of getting a sack, man I tell you, there's no other feeling like it...like an adrenaline rush on steroids. Our defense was just clicking tonight, I was able to watch from the field and see what some of our defensive anchors, you know, guys like Jaylon, and try to improve my game from that...It felt really good to be able to contribute, and even better that we got a really dominant win against one of the better teams in this league."
The Outlaws ended up winning the game 21-10 against the Wraiths, improving their record this season to a league-leading 4-1. In addition to his second quarter sack, Godfrey King was able to contribute an additional two tackles to Arizona's defensive line score.
