Wednesday, March 17th was a day of emotions, happiness, and excitement for all of the prospects entering the S28 ISFL Draft. Everything they had done in the years prior would lead up to this moment. While what you do after you get drafted matters more then the draft itself, getting drafted high still provides a great deal of accomplishment. One player who was not drafted high was 5th round pick Brandon Prince.
Prince had an up and down DSFL year, rushing for over 500 yards and racking up 5 touchdowns while splitting carries in Bondi Beach. He had done enough to get scouted by most of the league by the time the draft rolled around, and most mocks had him as a late 3rd, early 4th round pick. Little did Prince know that he would wait almost an hour for his name to be called, going in the fifth round to the New York Silverbacks.
Prince was left speechless by his freefall in the draft, and he is wondering one thing; “How did this happen?” For starters, there were character concerns about Prince heading into the draft. These concerns caused many teams to turn away and select other prospects. Prince was also earning at a slower rate than other running backs. This combined with his character issues made him slide in the draft all the way to pick 60.
Prince is hopeful that he can fix his reputation, stating “I’m gonna make sure that I’m not the person they think I am”. He seems eager to get started in his new home, but he will likely have to deal with getting sent down to the DSFL for another year. If he’s lucky, he might get called up mid-year, but it’s unlikely. It will be interesting to see how Prince’s career turns out. Can he fix his reputation and become a reliable player? Or will he continue the lifestyle that he knows best? As the season looms, it seems we’re about to find out.
