ISFL Season 28 Game Breakdowns - Austin Copperheads – Defensive Tackle - Owen Isaac
Here we are at game week 6 for the Austin Copperheads hosting the Honolulu Hahalua, Austin come into this off a home victory against the New York Silverbacks, taking them to tope of the division. They will look to create separation with the pack with a win against the 3-2 Hahalua’s this week.
Pre match interview with Defensive Tackle Owen Isaac
Interviewer: So we come into week 6 with the team sitting at 4-1, how are the team feeling at the moment with another home game here you can really start to separate from the pack with a win?
Owen Isaac: Well look we are all really happy with where our game is at the moment, wee are forcing turnovers and making stops, and offensively we have shown a great knack of getting the big plays when needed. But let’s be clear we do not come in expecting to win, we know we can win any game, but we have to show up, it would be disrespectful to discount any team we play before getting out on the field. We have already surpassed last season and the goal remains the same, make the playoffs, if we do that we are in with a shot, and if we can have home advantage with this fantastic crowd then even better, but there is a lot more football to be played.
Interviewer: Thanks for answering the questions today
Week 5 – Honolulu Hahalua
So the game gets off to a rougher start with a couple of punts to both sides, hey at least Jackie Daytona didn’t throw an instant interception this week. Honolulu go for their 3rd punt to start the game, BLOCKED… Montain manages to get through to the kicker and get one his big hands onto the ball. Giving us some great territory to try and kick start our own game here. First up we get a pass play setup, and Daytona gets sacked by Fields, and fumbles the ball but manages to recover it. 2nd play is another sack, that man Fields gets through again and manages to sack Daytona, who manages to hold onto the ball this time. Short yard gain on 3rd and down, give us a long field goal attempt to get points on the board. 50 yard field goal is good, Bloomfield has been so consistent for us this year. Thanks to a sack from Thomaslacher we manage to force another punt out of the Honolulu offence.
We start the 2nd quarter with the ball in hand but end up punting to them. Before some good defence forces them into a 4th and inches situation, and the pass is fantastically broken up by Bowie, forcing another turnover. The next drive gets to a great start with Jim the Vampire and Zoe Watts getting some good yards, before Daytona finds some nice yards, and then finds Videl-San for a 3 yard touchdown. Honolulu put together a long 5 minute drive but we hold them out of the endzone and force them into a field goal. The half plays out without any further incidents. So we went in with a nice 10-3 lead at the half.
The second half begins with us having to punt after getting held short of a first down, Bloomfield puts in a great punt inside the 10 yard line. Honolulu have the ball Huge sack from Dex Kennedy, forces the fumble, and he recovers it himself and breaks free, 15 yards of open space and he returns it for a Defensive touchdown, this man Kennedy cannot be stopped right now. 2nd time around Honolulu manage to put a good drive together but we managed to hold them from a 1st and goal to settle for a field goal. We have a good lead here with a 17-6 lead but we need to cement this in one of the next drives. Daytona completes a nice pass to Videl-San, who takes a big hit from Porter and fumbles the ball, and they get a turnover. They drive down to our 1 yard line and thanks to some big defensive effort with 2 tackles from Egghands and 1 from Kennedy we hold them, to once again take a field goal. We end up punting the ball to them and we end the quarter up 17-9, with Honolulu on the ball.
2 penalties don’t help the Honolulu drive and they end up punting the ball. Daytona manages to find some good yardage through Howlett before a nice 34 yard gain from Jeeta. Daytona finds, guess who, Videl-San once again for a 10 yard touchdown. Bloomfield with the extra point giving us a good 2 score lead with under 7 minutes on the clock. We force them into an immediate punt and get the ball back on our 18 yard line to start. Jim the Vampire makes a huge break down the side with a 54 yard rush to put us in a strong position. A few short yardage gaions later we are in nice position to kick another fieldgoal and make it a 3 score game. No mistakes from the reliable Bloomfield as we extend the lead to 27-9. Honolulu try to force a pass on a 3rd and 15, but MacAndrew nips in and steals the ball taking a great interception and killing the game there. Jackie managed a game today with no turnovers of the ball, depriving his charity of any money this week.
Post match interviews
Interviewer: I wanted to bring in Tyler Montain for a chat today. You topped your sides tackle charts today with 9, and managed a crucial early blocked punt, we don’t see too many of these from yourselves, is this something you have been working on?
Tyler Montain: Well, slimming down over the offseason has really improved my 40 time, and I've also been working on my explosiveness. I was just in a good position to make the play, and was really happy with the outcome.
Interviewer: There were some fantastic defensive plays from the side today particularly down in the redzone, twice holding the side out from a 1st and goal situation, what has made your side so effective this season?
Tyler Montain: The defense is really clicking this year, and honestly it just seems to be everyone stepping up and taking care of their assignment. Everyone has bought in, and it's showing on the field.
Interviewer: Next up is the sides kicker/punter Leo Bloomfield. You have been in fantastic form this season, and are the only kicker in the league yet to miss, you have had a quieter season on the field goal front due to the sides conversion rate in the redzone but you made 2 imprtant field goals today and one from 50 yards. Is this something you really wanted to work on this year as last season your success rate was down at 88%? The other side to your game, is the punting which again has improved dramatically from last season having already put 17 (55%) inside the 20, as compared to just 31% last season. This is certainly helping the offence get good field position, what has been the key difference that has helped you shine this season?
Leo Bloomfield: I think the key difference this season is the support I've been given by the coaches. Last season was quite a roller coaster kicking wise, so it definitely feels good to get back on track. I'm really hoping that I can keep this form going, trying to stay consistent, and helping out my teammates whenever I can.
Interviewer: So coach we sit here again after a good win for the side, at 5-1 only the Berlin Fire Salamanders sit at a better record, do you think your side can keep this run of form going? Next up you are away to the San Jose Sabercats who sit at 2-4 but have the leakiest defence in the division, do you expect your side to put on another performance?
Coach: I think we absolutely can continue this run, even with some tough games coming up. San Jose may have some defensive holes but that offense is capable of putting up big numbers and we can't take this week off by any means. That being said we have the talent to stop their run and pass game and our offense is loaded with talented ball catchers to make things exciting on both sides of the ball for us. It's been a great start to the season and we don't plan on losing the first place spot in the conference.
Interviewer: Well another week and the Austin Copperheads march on again after a strong performance and a victory to go with it. Next up are the 2-4 San Jose Sabercats, can Austin keep the train rolling? Same time next week.
