Hey Sabercats fans! We're back in the studio with John Canton after our first full month of the football season, and we're talking with him about his feelings toward the season so far, his predictions for the rest of the season, and his recent contract extension. We're excited to have this opportunity and hope that Canton will continue to meet with us as we progress through the season. So, without further ado, we'll send it down to Jessica who's sitting with Canton right now.
Jessica: I'm here with John Canton, star corner back of your San Jose Sabercats. John, glad to have you, how are things going?
Canton: Thanks for having me Jess, I'm glad to be here. Things are going great! The team has been doing much better than last year, my teammates are getting along great, my family's doing well. I can't ask for much more in life at the moment.
Jessica: That's great to hear. Now lets get into it. What are your thoughts on the first few games of the season? Anything you really liked or disliked? Anything you would change?
Canton: It's going well, we've had a lot of fight and are looking like a totally different team than last year. I've been loving watching our O Line manhandle these opposing D Lines. I call them IHOP, dudes just make pancakes all day long. Those guys make it possible for Ethan [Hunt] to be as effective as he is, and dude has been killing it. Can't forget to mention my boy Clee Hardrool. Dude is underrated as hell. Guy has like every kind of defensive play you can have, and it's a big confidence boost having someone that reliable behind you.
As far as dislike? Not too much. There's a few guys who should probably be on the practice field more often, or even at all. It feels like a couple of my teammates are just going through the motions, but not really putting in the time it takes to excel. I guess I'm a little upset about our kicking situation, but other than that I'd like to stay mostly positive.
What would I change? I don't really know. Sometimes the play calling on offence can be a little suspect, but I know that our coach is doing what he thinks is best, and will make the changes as he sees necessary.
Jessica: Sounds good. I like the new positive outlook of the team. On the subject of offence, what do you think about the whole Ethan Hunt situation?
Canton: Listen, I'm not here to talk dirty about any teammates, okay? That's just not what I do. Ethan's a great guy and a freak athlete. I mean, for a dude that rocks a dad bod hard, he's out there lighting the league on fire. It's weird, because I've talked to him about the whole 'wanting to be released' ordeal, and he seems like he's got nothing against the team. It's like he's an opposite of himself when it comes to his contracts versus his on the field play. On the field he's decisive, in charge, confident. But as far as what he wants to do in the future, your guess is as good as mine, or his. I think he wants to see what his options are before he makes a decision. You know what? I take back what I said earlier. Dude is just going through his progression before making the throw. If he continues this pace he'll be on track to be the highest paid player in the league one day.
Jessica: Interesting perspective, John. We haven't heard much from the team in regard to him, but it's good to know there are no hard feelings.
Canton: Nah, he's a good player and a good teammate. I'm glad to have him on our side.
Jessica: Alright then. Let's change up topics. Your most recent game against the Baltimore Hawks, while a loss, established you as the league's current leader in pass deflections, and you got as many in that game as you did through the first half of last season. What has helped you turn the corner?
Canton: I actually didn't know that. That's pretty cool, but doesn't really mean much if I can't keep up the pace. But you have to work. Practice, practice, practice. You watch the film, you run the routes, you work hard. Every. Day. And when you have killer receivers like Cooks and Weston on your team, you either get good, or you get burnt. I've also been trying to run receiver practice when I can, to try to get in their mindset and get my hands on the ball more often. Our coaches have been an incredible help, and I'm glad to have the opportunity to keep working with them.
Jessica: Sounds like you're very dedicated to your role, and the team.
Canton: Absolutely! These guys gave me my shot, and they've been like family ever since I got here.
Jessica: So, lets talk about your recent contract extension.
Canton: Yeah, I'm really excited about it. The GM reached out to me a couple weeks ago about a possible extension, and after some deliberation, I decided I wanted to stay in San Jose. Barring some crazy twist of fate, I'll be here for the next 3 seasons. I'm glad the front office recognized my potential and didn't hold last year against me, and look forward to proving my value in the future.
Jessica: Did you have any other offers?
Canton: Nah. I considered asking around, but it didn't feel right at the moment. Plus, I know what my stats were last season, and I wasn't gonna see a better offer. So no reason to look away from the love.
Jessica: We've actually just received word that your team has made a trade.
Canton: Oh really? What happened?
Jessica: Alright, just getting the details now. It looks like San Jose has traded their Season 3 7th round pick, and their Season 4 2nd round pick for Las Vegas Legion Corner Matthew Peterson. Looks like you've got a new partner in crime.
Canton: Awesome! That dude was on the Hawks last season right? I remember him putting up some great numbers. Seems like he's in QB's heads, they've been avoiding him this season.
Jessica: Well it looks like we've got yet another reason to keep watching our Cats! Thanks for joining us tonight! We look forward to seeing you two out on the field together tomorrow, and wish you the best of luck in the rest of the season. Go Sabercats!
Canton: Thanks for having me! I'll see you tomorrow night.
