This idea/rant first was going to be used for the Ultimus Week task however I decided that perhaps it would be best as a media piece, I hope that if this hasn't been really brought up before that it is a good thing and want to note that this isn't a criticism but a lofty idea.
I don't think this could count as a "league issue" as such but I think although the presentation of the ISFL/DSFL streams are good, I believe they can be improved to help have more involvement from the league. I have not been a part of the ISFL for very long at this stage, I joined after my interest in sim leagues peaked following me signing up for an affiliate - PBE. I joined PBE back when I had no job and couldn't find anything with COVID, there were no sports and sim leagues seemed like a good option. One of the key things I enjoy about the PBE sim league is that they have live streams of game throughout the week and you have a good chance to see your player and have commentary/chat about performances. I would love to see the development of commentary and flavor added to the ISFL video releases/streams. The ISFL has a different approach, the Youtube releases with music playing in the background as the games run through and through, it is effective at getting through the games however I think it could be developed to have more flair.
Please bear in mind that I have done little to no research for this subject and don't want to offend anyone that may reads this if this issue/point has been brought up before, but I think it would be a good addition to the league and would help increase the involvement of streams and perhaps increase people's interest in joining/participating for the long term.
I understand that there are a lot of logistics that has to go into prepping for a stream and having a commentator or two involved to commentate on what they are seeing but I can see the ISFL having the ability to do this, it just requires a good heads up and perhaps limiting the amount of times commentating happens, for example, the Ultimus/Ultimini. With the streams essentially being prerecorded which helps keep the stream time at a reasonable length and keeps the games fluid I don't see it being possible to have commentating on the bulk of games, as the play goes on far too fast and it would be near impossible to keep up with the gameplay, nobody needs a chipmunk style fast commentating to keep up.
I would like to see the possibility of one or two games a week (real life week, not a game week) being highlighted/showcased sort of like our version of Monday Night Football where we can see a matchup but with a little more definition to it. I think it would be good to have a marquee matchup at the end of a stream, where the game pace is toned down to a slightly faster than real life pace (something reasonable for people to follow with short breaks etc.) This stream could feature a close matchup for a playoff race or just two teams of any kind that are duking it out. If we wanted to get really fancy with it, there could be a short pre-game with a breakdown of how the teams are doing, who the key players are and how season's are going or any kind of fun facts like their previous records against each other or records held etc. This would help newer players like me get a better understanding of the history of the league and also to see different players on different teams (as well as my own). It would allow for a setting of the scene for anyone watching that doesn't have a vested interest in the two showcased teams.
The gameplay itself I alluded to above, the pace currently on youtube makes it a little difficult for myself personally to follow along as the plays and the actions etc. are quickly on the screen before moving on, which can be difficult to track. I would see if we can slow the pace down to something that is a bit slower and allows for commentary. Having a couple of commentators describing the plays or just even short snippets like sacks or big plays would allow for some flavour on the streams, it would be good to hear some excitement if a big run breaks out or there is a safety or blocked punt etc. Limiting their involvement to one game would mean that although there was a slower pace, the stream overall wouldn't run too long. There could also be a halftime sort of thing (if that is possible with the sim engine) that shows the stats and any key highlights of the game could be briefly discussed. After the game, the similar sort of thing, it would be cool for a little on screen discussion about key players of the game and to go over the stats and again highlights of key events that unfolded or any gaffs that occurred.
I think adding something like this would be great for the league and could allow for people to see a more in depth look at the ISFL without having to dig deep through the index. I believe that we would definitely have the people keen to do graphics or something to fill the pre game and post game etc. and this could be a cool once a week event that brought more people to view the stream. There would have to be a lot of logistics I am sure, but with the amount of active people and the thought of expansion always on foot, this could be a good draw card for the league.
If you have made it this far, I commend you on reading it... if you skipped to the end, well...thanks anyway!
