London Royals linebacker, Sam Squanch, ended his rookie season the same way it ended. On a confetti strewn field, holding a trophy. Sam Squanch joins a handful of players who have won two Ultimini Championships in one season, as well as completing the task for two different teams.
While waiting for the S28 DSFL Draft, Sam Squanch was picked up on waivers and signed to a free agent contract with the Dallas Birddogs. This special arrangement allowed Sam Squanch to get some playing time and experience without forfeiting his draft status for S28. Sam Squanch suited up for the Dallas Birddogs for the last two games of the regular season. Sam Squanch would record 5 tackles in the first game and 6 tackles in the second game. Dallas would finish the season 11-3 and power their way into the playoffs. Sam Squanch recorded 3 tackles and one pass defense in limited playing time in the conference championship game as Dallas narrowly edged out Tijuana 28-27. While only recording 1 tackle in the championship game, Sam Squanch still had his name engraved on the trophy and into the record books. Dallas would win the championship in another close game, besting the Kansas City Coyotes 23-21.
This early experience and performance likely contributed to him getting drafted third overall by the London Royals in the S28 DSFL draft. Sam Squanch made his presence felt immediately on the London Royals roster with 6 tackles, 1 sack and 1 pass defense in his first preseason action against the Norfolk Seawolves. Sam Squanch would follow up this perfomance with 12 tackles and a pass defense in his first regular season game against the rival Portland Pythons. These two teams would meet again in the playoffs.
Sam Squanch would finish the season with am impressive stat line of 97 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, 2 sacks and 3 passes defended.
The conference championship game would end up being against rival Portland, with the season series tied 1-1. London would prevail, recovering from a 17-10 deficit in the 3rd quarter, scoring 13 unanswered points to win 23-17. Sam Squanch would record 5 tackles in the game. The championship game set up a rematch of sorts for Sam Squanch, facing off against the Tijuana Luchadores, whom Squanch had faced in last season conference championship. After giving up an early TD to MVP Lonnie Jackson, London would take over and win the championship in dominating fashion, winning 26-10. Sam Squanch would record 5 tackles in this game as well.
Sam Squanch was named London's defense player of the game twice over the course of the season, after his week one performance of 12 tackles and a pass defense, and after his week 6 performance of 9 tackles, 1 tackle for loss and one forced fumble.
This performance certainly caught the eye of ISFL scouts. Sam Squanch entered the S29 ISFL Draft as a highly sought after prospect. Many mock drafts had him selected in the top five, and while he wasn't picked quite that high, he was still selected 7th overall by the Colorado Yeti. While Sam Squanch is excited to join his new team in Colorado, he will spend at least one more season in London to continue his development and help the team defend it's title. The Colorado Yeti recently announced that Sam Squanch had agreed to terms on a 3 year, 8 million dollar entry level contract which will keep him in Colorado through S31.
