Defensive Line Standouts - Week 8: Fumblerooskie!
Welcome to week 8 of our weekly look at defensive line performances across the league. During a week where the “under dog” won 3 of 4 games, something odd was going on. Clearly week 8 was the week of the greased-up pigskin as the defensive tackles alone caused 3 forced fumbles. With some many footballs put on the ground this week, many would expect it to lead to some wild games, and it surely did. Enough chit chat… Let’s begin!
Defensive End Top Performers
J. Tuck ($ x7) 5 TCK, 3 TFL, 1 SCK
Tuck makes his seventh consecutive appearance on our list, second to only Ramrio of the Las Vegas Legion. Tuck finished the game with 5 tackles, 3 tackles for loss and a sack. These performances are becoming commonplace for Tuck, who currently leads the NSFL in sacks.
C Okonkwo ($$$) 7 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
Okonkwko continued his hot streak this week and put forth his best performance of the season. With his 7 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 sack, Okonkwo was a true bright spot for the SaberCats in an otherwise disappointing game.
D. Dam ($$$$) 6 TCK, 3 TFL
The other half of what is arguably the best defensive end combo in football. Dam put forth another fantastic game, this time against the Hawks, with 6 tackles and 3 tackles for loss. Unfortunately for the Outlaws, it just wasn’t enough as the Hawks came out ahead in a true battle, 13-10.
Other Great Performers
K. Hendrix ($ x6) 3 TCK, 1 TFL, 2 SCK
B. Blade ($$$$) 3 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
T. Bullard ($$$) 5 TCK, 2 TFL
Hendrix makes his sixth appearance on the list as the only defensive end with multiple sacks this week. Blade has a nice streak going, claiming his spot on the list for the fourth week in a row, while Bullard brought some much-needed heat from the outside for Legion. Thanks in large part to the play of the defensive line, the Legion were able to claim their second win of the season, and first win since week 1.
Defensive Tackle Top Performers
B. Bjornsson ($ x6) 6 TCK, 1 SCK, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovered
Bjornsson put together his best performance of the season against the Liberty, but it was too little, too late. Bespite his 6 tackles, a sack, and both a forced and recovered fumble, Yellowknife fell to the Liberty, 21-6.
M. Ramrio ($ x8) 4 TCK, 2 SCK, 1 fumble recovered
Ramrio continues his streak of being the only player to make the list every week this season. After a pair of sacks this last game, he is now tied for second for the most sacks in the NSFL, and first for all defensive tackles. He continues to be invaluable to the Legion, and ½ of the best interior line duo in the NSFL.
J. Boom ($$$$) 6 TCK, 1 SCK, 1 forced fumble
Quite possibly the best waiver wire claim this season, Boom has been a huge asset to the Hawks. Although he came into the league as a defensive end, he’s be spectacular at defensive tackle. His 6 tackles, 1 sack, and forced fumble were more than enough to earn him his fourth spot on our list.
Other Great Performers
V. Cox ($ x7) 5 TCK, 1 SCK, 1 forced fumble
A. Asipi ($$$) 5 TCK, 1 SCK
B. Bot ($$$$) 6 TCK
Almost any other week, Cox’s performance would’ve been enough to put him on top of the list. Unfortunately for him, there were some truly phenomenal performances this week. Asipi posted a near identical stat line to Cox, minus the forced fumble. Bot, who is making his fourth appearance on the list, didn’t make any plays in the backfield but, his 6 tackles made it tough sledding for the Otter’s run game.
Team Appearances After Week 8
Las Vegas: 20
Arizona: 17
Baltimore: 15
Colorado: 13
Orange County: 10
Yellowknife: 9
Philadelphia: 8
San Jose: 7
Las Vegas has a firm hold on first place, but after three out of four of Arizona’s linemen made the list, they were able to jump Baltimore and claim the second most appearances of any team. Interesting to note that there were actually two teams to not make our list this week, The Orange County Otters and The Philadelphia Liberty. San Jose is still holding down the basement but is slowly gaining ground on Philadelphia and Yellowknife. Arizona and Philadelphia both have bye weeks for week 9, so it will be interesting to see if some of the lesser known players will step up to fill the list. As always, please feel free to share your thoughts and comments below!
