According to my research, there's several third receivers who are up and coming stars in this league. Let's take a look at them and see what their future holds. Some may be brighter than others.
John Baker - 18 Rec. 153 yds. 1 TD
C.A. Chess - 26 Rec. 233 yds. 3 TD
Jon Ross - 31 Rec. 297 yds. 2 TD
Johnny Rocket - 17 Rec. 215 yds. 0 TD
Trey Willie - 6 Rec. 66 yds. 1 TD
Hunter Mason - 25 Rec. 188 yds 2 TD
Brian Wheat - 7 Rec. 87 yds. 0 TD
Darren Smallwood - 32 Rec. 351 yds. 1 TD
The future certainly looks bright for Smallwood, Chess and Ross who seem to get a good share of the passes thrown their way. Of the three, I would be most inclined to say that C.A. Chess has the brightest future because he's rapidly approaching the same TPE as the #2 in Arizona, Dustin Evans, and gets about as many looks as he does. He also gets more TDs, which looks really nice on the stat sheet. That is not to say that Smallwood or Ross are dimmer stars, really. Smallwood is fairly comparable to Ross. While Ross has one touchdown over Darren, it would seem like Smallwood gets more use in the midfield, and lets stud Josh Garden get the end zone treatment.
The second tier of third string receivers. Rocket, Mason and Baker make up the second tier. These guys have been serviceable but not as important to their teams as the above three. A lot of this might be due to the scheme, but in couple specific instances you can blame inactivity. Hunter Mason was off to a great start, and his stats still show him being effective. However since he has not updated in a couple weeks his ceiling has dropped substantially. Should he return, he could quickly get himself back into top form and move himself into that upper tier, he certainly has the talent. Rocket is much the same. He could have been great but inactivity killed his ability to become great. Like Mason, if he comes back he could see more use. But as of right now, he's a plummeting stock. Baker is the lone man in this tier who is active, and given some more looks and play time, he'll hopefully be in the ranks of Chess, Smallwood and Ross.
The bottom of the third WR squad are two young players. Brian Wheat and Trey Willie. Wheat is arguable the 4th WR on the Sabercats Roster but I have him here as 3rd because he's at least active and over the last 3 games, he's made a larger impact. I only have Wheat here because he's played 3 games while most others have been playing a full 8 games. Wheat continues to grow his stock and depending on how the chips land, he could either be a big star in the Developmental League or end up replacing one of those guys in the second tier because of their inactivity after the S3 draft. Trey Willie is in an unfortunate circumstance and I have to feel bad for the guy. He's a needed commodity in Orange County on specific instances, but with three top tier mouths to feed over him, with Phelps, Westfield and Wright, he's simply not getting the looks to compete with guys like Ross, Chess or even Baker for that matter. He keeps his head held high though, and his TPE is rising by the week. Maybe he'll be put more into the Otters gameplan as the season draws to a close. And like with Wheat, if there's a larger opening in the Developmental League where he can shine bright, or as a viable replacement for Mason or Rocket, nobody would blame him for going there.
No matter what happens going forward, the need for a third WR in the NSFL is there, and there's always going to be these players who have to play behind the bigger stars. They may never get the true recognition they deserve by the media, or in Pro-Bowl Votes, but they are essential to many teams success.
